17.In Singapore, most of us love window-shopping while some others enjoy having a picnic at East Coast Park or Changi Beach on sunny days.Singaporeans are never bothered by the occasional thunderstorm. However,we know that if it rains for long continuous periods, there will be more serious effects.Just recently the main shopping street of Orchard Road was flooded and some part of Bukit Timah was impassable to traffic.People reacted by writing in to the newspaper to complain about this!We forget that other countries suffer much worse effects.Elsewhere, heavy tropical(热带的)storms often result in floods that ruin erops especially in Thailand and Malaysia. This in turn usually means that the price of rice and vegetables here in Singapore will rise because we import these products from them.If there is a typhoon or tsunami, thousands of lives are lost too. This happened in Indonesia and Phuket in Thailand in 2004 and it serves to remind us of how Mother Nature can cause great damage.
Weather patterns in general have changed dramatically in recent years.Scientists believe that global warming and the resulting melting of the polar ice-cap has caused the level of the ocean to rise. This in turn causes flooding of low-lying areas in countries where the land is rather flat and some parts of which is below water level. It is believed that human activities have caused Mother Nature to show her extreme anger,so it is now important that we really work together to cut down on harmful activities, for example, illegal logging(伐木)or irresponsible forest-burning to clear land for farming.

A.Train conflict-management
B.Teach mutual respect
C.Guide children by personal examples
D.Recognize the existence of sibling conflict
E.Show appreciation for who your child is
F.Do not play favorites
76.Sibling conflict is as old as Cain and Abel,as legendary as Cinderella and her stepsisters and can be as deadly as the daughters of King Lear.Parents should know the battles are inevitable and must prepare their kids to defuse potentially ugly situations.And there will be times when parents must come to a child's defense and say,"We are family,and we will not say anything that doesn't build up one another.We will respect each other."Use following tips for encouraging kindness in the home:D
77.Do not allow your children to insult one another.Words are extremely powerful,and snide comments can damage deeply.Experts say every negative comment needs at least five positive remarks to even out.Teach your children to be kind and to appreciate each other.Encourage your  kids to see each other's talents.Through recognizing these unique strengths,they will be able to work together well.B
78.Sibling rivalry usually originates from a child feeling that the other sibling is loved more,and in some cases when parents are being substantively unfair or show favoritism toward one child,this indeed may be the problem.In Genesis,we see the damage done by Jacob's favoritism of Joseph.Remember that all children are created equal,but not all children are the same.Recognize and praise each child's individual skills,strengths and accomplishments without implying that one child is somehow better.Be sure each child receives adequate parental interest and quality time.F
79.Do not deny your child's feelings,but help him learn to express emotions in an appropriate way.If you see your child acting jealously,encourage him to identify the emotion by saying,"I understand that you feel bad because…"or"I know you hurt because…"Helping your children figure out the causes of their actions will help them learn how to deal with problems in the future.A
80.Most parents realize children imitate what they see,so look at the example you set.Do you compete with your siblings?Or do you consistently show kindness to your brothers and sisters?By checking your actions,you can be better prepared to show your children how to emerge the best of friends following the inevitability of a little sibling conflict.C.
5.London will stage its biggest political funeral in almost half a century on Wednesday when Britain's governing elite join the Queen and global leaders to bid farewell to former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, better known as the"Iron Lady".
In an event comparable to that of Winston Churchill's funeral in 1965,Thatcher's coffin will be carried on a horse-drawn gun carriage through streets lined with admirers from parliament to the city's most famous cathedral.
The bells of London's symbolic Big Ben clock tower will fall silent for the first time since Churchill's funeral and more than 700 men and women from Britain's armed forces will honor a woman who led them to victory in the 1982 Falklands War as foreign politicians from around 170 nations look on.
Surveys have shown that many are unhappy that the estimated l0-million($15 million) pound bill for the funeral is being picked up by the taxpayer, while some left-wing lawmakers say the luxurious funeral is too expensive.
But her admirers,of whom there are many in her party and in southern England, argue that her historical profile deserves such a funeral. She was the country's first and only woman premier, was Britain's longest-serving prime minister of the 20th century, and won three general elections.
More than 2,300 mourners will attend including 11 serving prime ministers from around the world, the British government's entire cabinet, two heads of state and 17 foreign ministers.
But there will be notable absences.Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev is too ill to attend and Nancy Reagan, the widow of Thatcher's great U.S.ally Ronald Reagan,is also unable to come.
Thatcher struck up a close relationship with Reagan during the Cold War,backed the first President George Bush during the 1991 Gulf War,and was among the first to discover that Gorbachev was a man she could"do business with".
Covered in the red, white and blue British flag,Thatcher's coffin lay overnight in a 13th-century church in Britain's parliament,a forum she dominated for years.

12.It's a Christmas tradition that's more than half a century old.And it happened completely by accident.
It started in 1955,when a local Sears store in Colorado Springs,Colorado printed an ad,which included a spedial phone mumber kids could call to know where Santa's sleigh was at any given moment.Unfortunately, someone made a mistake in printing the phone mumber and kids were calling the wrong line.
A Colonel(上校) named Henry Shoup began answering his phong at what would become NORAD,the North American Aerospace Defence Command. At first,he thought it was a simple error of one caller.
But as the phone ketp ringing and tiny voices kept asking about Santa,Shoup realized he couldn't disappoint them.So he told the staff to issue updates to any one asking about the location of Santa.
The wrong turned into a custom of the holiday and kept growing in popularity, and NORAD finally decided to make it permanent.
It's become a holiday favourite ever since, adapting to whatever new technology has come along since. In the early days,it was a phone line. Then in the 60s,NORAD put out a special series of"reports"that was played on hundreds of radio stations across North America, broadcasting the Jolly Old Elf's exact position on Christmas Eve.
Think of it as kind of an early GPS without the computer gear.
Finally, came the Internet and NORAD has now transferred its annual watch onto the Web,with a site devoted to keeping tabs on the most famous journey in the world-what you might call the real amazing race,an around-the-world mission that has to be finished within 24hours.
This year's entry allows kids to track Santa in 3Dusing Google Earth and play games at the North Pole using the Kids Countdown Section, and it even offers Santa Cams which are only operational on the night before Christmas.

2.Plastic is one of the most important technological discoveries of the 20th century.However,it may soon be replaced.The new development-liquid wood-can replace plastics in all branches of modern-day industries.
Plastic as a material enjoys the biggest demand in the modern world,but it does have a number of drawbacks.First and foremost,plastic isn't recyclable.Secondly,it contains toxins (毒物) helping develop cancerous diseases.Finally,it's made of oil and oil reserves aren't endless.
The liquid wood technology is likely to replace plastic and providing mankind with new materials for many years ahead.Norbert Eisenfreich,a senior researcher at the Faunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology in Germany (ICT),said that arboform,the new material,is made of lignin(木素质),which can be obtained from soft tissues of wood.Once mixed with several other matenals,it turns into solid and non-toxic  alternative  for plastics.
ICT team leader Emilia Regina Inone-Kauffmann said the wood-working industry separates wood into three basic components,including lignin.Lignin isn't used for the production of paper.Specialists of ICT mixed lignin with several natural materials and thus invented the material which could be melted and molded (铸型).
When solid,arboform looks like plastic and possesses tho qualitie of polished wood.It can be used for the production of any items.Arboform is already used for the production of car parts which require extra strength.In addition,liquid wood can be recycled repeatedly.The material preserved all of its qualities even if it's reprocessed ten times.
However,the new invention doesn't enjoy an extensive use due to the high content of sulfur(硫) in it.German researchers are sure to reduce the amount of sulfur by 90% very soon to make arboform usable for home needs.

71.According to the passage,plasticC.
A.helps us to reduce the use of petrol
B.helps to protect our environment in some way
C.does harm to our society in some way
D.has been replaced by the newly discovered material
72.What's the advantage of arboform over plastic?C
A.It is easier made from natural oil.
B.It is more widely used in household
C.It is recyclable and friendly to environment.
D.It contains no poisonous materials.
73.The underlined word"altemative"in Paragraph 3meansD.
A.lignin or arboform
B.soft tissues of wood
C.plastics or wood
D.mixture of several materials
74.It can be concluded that German researchers will focus their future work firstly onB.
A.the material's extensive use
B.the content of sulfur in arboform
C.the production cost of arboform

9.Do you sometimes argue about what seems to you to be simple fact?Do you argue whether it's cold outdoors or whether the car in front of you is going faster than the speed limit?
If you get into such arguments,try to think about the story about the six blind men and the elephant.The first blind man who felt the elephant's trunk said it was like a snake.The second who felt the elephant's side said it was like a wall,while the third said it was like a spear as he touched the animal's tusk.The fourth,who caught hold of the elephant's tail insisted that it was like a rope.The fifth man said it looked like a tree as he put his arms around one of the elephant's legs.The sixth,who was tall and got hold of the elephant's ears,said it was like a huge fan.
Each man's idea of the animal came from his own experience.So if someone disagrees with you about a"simple fact",it's often because his experience in the matter is different from yours.
To see how hard it is for even one person to make up his mind about a"simple fact",try this simple experiment.Get three large bowls.Put ice water in one.Put hot water in the second.Put lukewarm water in the third.Now put your left hand in the ice water.Put your right hand in the hot water.After thirty seconds,put both hands in the lukewarm water.Your right hand will tell you the water is cold.Your left hand will tell you it's hot!

56.What makes people think about simple facts differently?B
A.The fact that simple facts differ from one another.
B.The fact that people have different experience in the simple facts.

D.you should not care too much about simple fact.
6.In the age of reality television,success isn't the only way to the public eye.Failure can also create fame,just like William Hung,21,a native of Hong Kong.
Hung recently has made an agreement with US-based entertainment firms Koch Records and Fuse Music Network.They'll publish a record,titled"The True Idol"on April 6.
The idol is a civil engineering student at the University of California at Berkeley.He did a version of Ricky Martin's"She Bangs"on the television show"American Idol 3",on January 27.The Fox TV singing contest searches for pop stars among ordinary people.In the case of Hung,however,his act was so bad that the judges cut him off in mid-act.
Hung's response?"I already did my best,so I have no regrets at all."That's good,because any common person would have found plenty to regret:the off-key singing,the blue Hawaiian shirt worn with pants pulled up too high,the terrible dancing and the hips jerking(摇摆)to a beat that did not belong to the song,maybe not even to this planet.It was,by all accounts,bad.
However,it was this very bad act that sold well.
Mare Juris,president of Fuse,explained it this way:"Every one of us is happily guilty of singing our favorite song at the top of our lungs with complete freedom,completely off-key and completely unworried.That's what William did and immediately won the hearts of America."
Whatever  it is,for the moment it's big.Three websites devoted to Hung have gone up on the Internet in the past few weeks.Versions of his performance have been remixed with hip hop and techno-music and have made it to the top 10request list at a Chicago radio station.
So,what does Hung think of this?
"There were all these people saying things about me.A lot were saying I was very courageous and that I was great on the show,but some didn't have much respect for me and some were kind of mean."
Now he says he's not so sure whether to distance himself from the glamour(魅力) or to accept it.Returning to normal hasn't been easy.

67.What is the main idea of this passage?C
A.Something an idol behaves quite foolishly.
