I often quarrel with my mother over if I can watch TV after school. My mother thinks that senior students, burden with their studies, are so busy to spare any time to watch TV. It seemed to her that I will not able to control myself and forget all about my study once I am allowed to. She also thinks that it’s bad for her eyes to watch TV too often. But I really can’t accept her ideas. I think it’s relaxed to watch TV before a day’s hard work. It can set my mind at rest and broaden my horizons as well. Besides, and we can be kept informed of what’s happening at home.

Now we have reached an agreement that I can only watch TV at weekends, and the content is limited to news and program of entertainment, sports and science.

【题目】The murmur of the audience had just faded into expectant silence. This was one of the most important days in little five-year-old Patricia McKee’s life: the Kernot School Concert. She stood behind the curtain with her schoolmates. Yet she was not afraid because everyone had been practicing for weeks and knew their parts by heart.

Being in a remote country town, Patricia knew that everyone would turn out for the big occasion-everyone! Yet, it was this awareness that added a sense of sadness to her excitement. There were two people who couldn’t be in that audience that night-her mum and dad.

Patricia’s mother and father ran the local general store, which was open for business 24 hours. So it was simply accepted that Mum and Dad could never attend community activities. It had been this way with her sister, so why should it be any different for her?

Still, Patricia couldn’t help wishing that her mum and dad could be there to see her on such a special day, so she decided to bring up the subject with her mother. Sadly, she had to face the facts. At such a young age, Patricia couldn’t really understand the deep pain in her mother’s response: “I’ll try to be there, sweetheart, but you know how hard it is for us to get away from the store.”

Yet as the curtain slowly opened on the stage of the Kernot Hall, little Patricia McKee got the surprise of her life. There, sitting four rows the front was her mother with a big smile on her face!

This powerful image remains one of Patricia’s most treasured memories. “Words cannot express the pure joy we both experienced at that moment. I was really walking on air,” said Patricia, now a parent herself. Her parents have passed away, but what a wonderful legacy(遗产)they’ve left us: when someone really needs you, be there for them.

【题目】Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are concerned with their own appearance and actions too much. Negative thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?

It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people unfavorably. A person's self-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves and the way a person behaves affects other people's reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a deep effect on all areas of their lives.

Shy people, who have low respect, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need faith that they are doing "the right thing". Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. It makes them feel inferior(自卑). They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy person may respond to a praise with a statement like this one: "You're just saying that to make me feel good, I know it's not true.” It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.

Can shyness be completely got rid of, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determination since shyness goes hand in hand with lack of self-respect. It is important for people to accept their weakness as well as their strengths. Each one of us has his or her own characteristics. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and successful life.

【1】The first paragraph is mainly about ________.

A. the cause of shyness

B. the effect of shyness on people

C. the feelings of shy people

D. the questions in the minds of shy people

【2】According to the writer, self-awareness is ________.

A. harmful to people

B. a weak point of shy people

C. the cause of unhappiness

D. a good characteristic

【3】What is the shy people's reaction to praise?

A. They are pleased by it.

B. They feel it is not true.

C. They are very sensitive to it.

D. They feel they are worthy of it.

【4】We can learn from the passage that shyness can ________.

A. block our chances for a successful life

B. help us to live up to our full development

C. enable us to understand ourselves better

D. have nothing to do with lack of self respect

【题目】阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

In a small village, the parents of a little boy were very depressed due to his bad temper(脾气). The boy used to get angry very easily and hurt others with his words. While he forgot what he spoke in anger, his friends and neighbours avoided him.

His mother and father tried many ways to make him give up his anger and develop kindness. Unfortunately, all their attempts failed. Finally, the boy’s father came up with an idea.

One day, his father gave him a huge bag of nails, asking him to hammer one nail to the fence every time he lost his temper. The little boy found it funny and accepted what his father had said.

His anger drove him to hammer 30 nails into the fence on the first day! Over the next few days, the little boy found it very difficult to hammer the nails into the fence and decided to control his temper.

Gradually, the number of nails hammered into the fence was reduced and the day arrived when he hammered none!

Now, his father told him to remove the nails every day as he had controlled his anger. Several days passed and the boy was able to pull out most of the nails from the fence.

The father appreciated him and asked him, pointing to one of the holes, “What do you see there?”

The boy replied, “A hole in the fence?”

He told the boy, “The nails were your bad temper and they were hammered into people. You can remove the nails but still see the holes in the fence. The fence never looks the same! It has scars all over! Your bad temper and anger were like that! Use words for good. Use them to show your heart!”
