Bill Gates is one of the most famous people in the world. His books have been translated into many languages.

What many people do not know is that he is not the only founder of Microsoft. A lot of honor must go to his partner, Paul Allen.

Allen and Gates met at Lakeside Preparatory School. They and some other friends became interested in computers. They began skipping(逃)PE lessons to play on the school computers. Their school did a deal with a computer company. It al-lowed Allen and Gates to use the company's computers for free. They even started their first software business while in high school. Computers were their lives.

After leaving school, Alien worked as a programmer. Gates went to Harvard University, one of the best universities in the world, to study law. The invention of computers was small enough to be used at homes, called personal computers, helped Allen persuade Gates to leave Harvard University and start Microsoft together. They designed software like MS-DOS and BASIC for large companies like IBM. However, they were not satisfied with the software and came up with a new system, called Windows. Allen was one of the main programmers. The equally successful Microsoft Office soon followed.

Allen fell ill in 1983. He stopped working full-time for Microsoft. He took time off, read, traveled and stayed with his family. Allen and Gates are still close. He is still involved in Microsoft, and as one of the richest men in the world, doesn't regret leaving.

Of course, what is an ideal(理想)holiday for one person may be a very unpleasant one for another. The sportsman likes a kind of holiday which his lazy friend would find worse than his daily work;while the lazy man’s ideal holiday would leave the sportsman quite unsatisfied.

If I were allowed to choose my own holiday,I would have no doubts;I would go on a voyage(远航)in a modern passenger ship with a swimming bath.Even if my sportsman friend and my lazy friend came with me,they would both be happy;one would have plenty of games, swimming and dancing;the other could sit in a comfortable chair all day, looking at the sea and drinking lemonade(柠檬水)or beer.In a ship, one can do as one likes. If one day I find an interesting book in the ship’s library,I can spend the whole day reading it,and nobody will stop me.Perhaps the next day I shall want some exercise.Well, then I can play games with other passengers until I am hot and sweating and ready for a bath.I can go and sleep in my cabin at any time of the day or night,I can get cheap drinks during most of the day,and I can eat as I like, choosing among a variety of foods.

But what I like even more about a sea voyage is the chance to meet new and interesting people from many countries. What other kind of holiday gives us such a chance?Freed from(从……解脱)all the duties of life at home,we can talk, play games, swim, drink, sing and dance with our new friends. They can tell us about their own countries, their daily lives and amusements, their hopes and their fears. And in return we can tell them all about ourselves.

But perhaps the greatest pleasure of a sea holiday is coming to new ports in strange lands, and going ashore for a few hours to see strange places, eat strange foods and hear a strange language talked around us.Whenever I think of my ideal holiday,it is the picture of a mysterious foreign city that comes to my mind.

Twenty-six years after a terrible bicycle accident left her comatose(昏迷) for two months and with permanent brain injuries, Barbara Buchan, performs many actions more slowly than others. But on September 10 in Beijing, Buchan, at 52, the oldest member of the United States Paralympic team, broke the record and won the gold medal for her disability class in the individual 3,000-meter cycling pursuit.

“You can be very upset at the world and have everyone take care of you,” Buchan said by telephone from Beijing, “or get back on your feet again.”

Buchan first dreamed of Olympic gold at age 15 while watching the 1972 Munich Games. She became a top American cyclist by July 1982, when a terrible road-race crash injured her brain and left doctors doubtful about whether she would survive. She was wearing only a soft leather helmet at the time; her accident made the rule put into practice that cyclists wear the hard-shell helmets that are now common.

Buchan recovered enough of her athletic ability to run track in the 1988 Paralympics in Seoul, where she won a silver medal in the 800 meters. Women’s cycling was not included in the Paralympics yet, so Buchan trained to the point where she raced against men in the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney, Australia — she finished 9th and 10th in two races — and then successfully fought for a separate women’s cycling program beginning in 2004 in Athens, where she did not get a medal.

Even though she was approaching her 50s, Buchan kept racing and again made the United States Paralympic team for Beijing — where she is twice the age of most of her teammates and competitors.

“Barbara’s almost the leader of our team — she’s been through it all,” said Craig Griffin, the United States cycling coach. “She’s never retired. She’s never let her body go and then come back. I don’t think age is as big of a deal as people make it out to be.”

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese student they always say, “My spoken English is poor.” However, their spoken English does not have to remain “poor”! I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.

First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if your attitude is positive. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.

Second, they are afraid of making mistakes. Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY(准确性). Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly. However, in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn’t matter because the person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.

The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing was necessary for you to start speaking.

Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English, they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.

If you do not use your English beyond the classroom, you will forget what English you know. Remember: USE IT OR LOSE IT! You can learn how to speak English better by speaking English more.

1.What is most probably the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?

A.To improve your reading.

B.To improve your listening.

C.To improve your spoken English.

D.To improve your vocabulary.

2.It can be inferred from the third paragraph that______.

A.don’t be fluency , Just be accuracy

B.don’t be nervous ,don’t be shy . Just write!

C.don’t be afraid of making mistakes . Just speak!

D.don’t be shy ,don’t be fluency. Just listen and write!

3.The last paragraph is possibly close to the meaning of “_____”.

A.teacher’s diary                    B.report on study
