Table Manners and Hygiene-East vs. West

Mr. Wang

2008.3-15

6:30 PM

I started thinking about this issue at my brother-in law’s 60th birthday party last Saturday. Before we ate the main meal we sat around a table that was loaded with large bowls of snack items, chocolate-covered peanuts, munchies(小吃), cherries, and a few other things. The eater had to reach into the bowl and grab(抓)a handful of snacks and then convey them to the mouth with the other hand. A lot of people were strangers to me and I observed a cat being carried around, a dog being petted, and a number of noses being rubbed, between eating handfuls of snacks. Ughh!

I started thinking about Chinese table manners. My wife and I will share things from the same plate or cup but we always put serving spoons out with the dishes on the table. Often we don’t use them though. In my family we use our personal chopsticks to take food from the serving dishes. But we are careful and only touch food we will eat ourselves.

I hate that too. It’s not like it happens everywhere you know. At least in the ‘Netherlands you’re not supposed to touch other people’s food. And if you touch something, you have to eat it.

Basically a Dutch setup: 3 pans/bowls, 1 with meat, 1 with rice or potatoes and 1 with vegetables. Every pan/ bowl has its own “opscheplepel”(big spoon) and you’re not allowed to touch it with your mouth/ hands/ whatever. Only put the food on your own plate. Everyone has their own plate with their own set of spoon/ knife/fork.

In an English restaurant everything you eat comes ready allocated(分配)onto your plate. Usually you do not need to transfer things onto  your plate, for the kitchen did that already. In the flu and cold season even touching a spoon handle or chopstick that others have used to transfer food will dirty your fingers with these viruses, so English restaurant style is the most hygienic(unless the waitress had flu, but then the manager will not allow a waiter or waitress with a raging cold to serve.)

If the communal(共用的)bowls contain foods you help yourself to by picking them up with a pair of chopsticks that no one uses for the purpose of eating, then communal bowls are not bad. Use communal chopsticks to transfer food from the communal bowl into your own bowl, and voila….

Sometimes people will use their own chopsticks to help themselves to items from communal bowls, thus transferring bacteria from their own body to the communal vessels. This can be seen in lots of hole-pin-the-wall restaurants. I personally favor silverware over chopsticks but that has nothing to do with hygiene(卫生保健).One drawback of the use of chopsticks is: an inordinate(过多)amount of timber(木材)is misused in making disposable chopsticks. But I don’t like Mc-Donald’s dining style where you must pick up your French fries with your fingers! Nothing can be more elegant(高雅)and hygienic than using knives, spoons and forks properly.

第三部分阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
Many people will remember the flight of the space shuttle(航天飞机)challenger,in June,1983. The achievement of Sally Ride,America’s first woman astronaut to fly into space, made this flight especially memorable. Students from two Camden, New Jersey, high schools, however, are probably to remember Norma rather than Sally whenever they think about the flight.
Norma didn’t travel alone. She brought about 100 companions along with her. Norma was an ant,a queen ant who, with her subject, made up the first ant colony(群体)to travel into space. The ants were part of a science experiment designed by students to test the effects of weightlessness on insects.
The equipment designed by the students for their colony functioned perfectly throughout the long space trip. The young scientists and their teachers were very sad to find that their insect astronauts had all died at some point before the container was returned to the school and opened. The problem didn’t occur in space, but on the ground after challenger had landed. The container remained in the desert for nearly a week before the ant colony was moved. The hot,dry desert air dried out the colony’s container and the ants died from lack of moisture(水分).
The project was termed success because it did provide useful information. Students will continue their efforts to pinpoint(精确找到)what went wrong. They will try to prevent the same difficulties from reoccurring on future missions. They don’t want to be discouraged either by the demise of the ants or by the $ 10,000 shuttle fare they will have to pay to send the next colony of ants into space.
51.What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.Sally Ride,America’s first woman astronaut.
B.How to keep ants alive in space.
C.How to make equipment for insects in space.
D.An experiment with ants in space.
52.According to the passage, we know that the underlined word“demise”is another word for“_____”.
A.death B.colony
C.insect D.moisture
53.We don’t think the project was a failure. This is because_____.
A.everything went as smoothly as expected
B.the students had pinpointed exactly the reason
C.something important had been learned
D.the students had succeeded in the experiment
54.We can conclude that ants _____ on the next space trip.
A.will have to be kept alive in a container full of water
B.will have to be sent into space with the first woman astronaut
C.should be put into a container where there is enough food
D.should be put into a container which is not too dry

How to protect children Web fans from unsuitable material on-line while encouraging them to use the Internet has long been discussed in the U.S.
For some parents, the Internet can seem like a jungle, filled with danger for their children. But jungles contain wonders as well as dangers and with good guides, some education, and a few precautions(预防措施), the wilds of the Internet can be safely navigated(航行). “Kids have to be on-line. If we tell our kids they can’t have access(机会) to the Internet, we’re cutting them off from their future,” said an expert.
Most kids have started to use search engines. Many of them are great for finding tons of interesting Internet sites, and they can also locate places where you might not want your kids to go. There are search engines designed just for kids. A certain software contains only sites that have been selected as safe. The most popular way to limit access would be to use what is known as a “content screener(过滤器)”. But this can’t be wholly reliable(可靠), and the best thing parents can do is to talk to their kids and let them know what is OK or not OK to see or do on the Internet. Another way is that mum or dad is nearby when the child is surfing(浏览) the Internet.
A few other tips●Don’t put the PC in a child’s room but keep it in an area where mum or dad can keep an eye on things. That also makes the Internet more of a family activity.
●Ask your child what he or she has been doing and about any friends they make on-line.
●Tell your child not to give on-line strangers personal information, especially like address and phone number.
●And tell your children never to talk to anyone they meet on-line over the phone, send them anything, accept anything from them or agree to meet with them unless you go along.

Knowing the best way to study will help you to be a better student. By using your time properly, you can do your homework more quickly. Learning to study is not difficult.
The first thing to remember is that you must be willing to learn. It doesn’t mean that you must always like the subject. It does mean, however, that you must be willing to do whatever is necessary to learn. Try to understand why it is important and how it will help you now and later to do and learn other things. Knowing mathematics facts will be useful in your whole life.  Knowing how to spell makes any kind of writing easier. Sometimes subject that you think is going to be uninteresting will be exciting when you begin to work at it and understand it more clearly. Learning things can be fun if you are willing to work with them.
Here’s some advice for you: have a certain time each day and a quiet place with good lighting for study, so that you can concentrate on your study without interruptions(中断); have everything ready before you sit down to study, a dictionary, paper, a pen and books; be sure you understand what you should learn before you start; read carefully and pay special attention to the most important things; when memorizing, first find out the main parts and then recite the whole thing; check your homework after you finish it; never forget the importance of review and preview.

The early lack of exposure to science ,technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) can be harmful to achieving gender (性别)balance in these fields. It begins when we are young and continues throughout our time in high school.
While at home, girls generally don’t get to experience the level of exposure or encouragement in STEM fields that their male counterparts do. It is often subtle ,but it’s the first hurdle that faces and confuses so many women. Boys ,on the other hand, get on their path ,and are encouraged to do so, generally earlier than girls. For example ,boys are more often given science sets as toys ,which spark an interest in these subjects.
In school 3 boys are often pushed to take the more challenging math and science classes. So if we want to attract the best and brightest minds into the fields that will advance us as a people ? a country, and a planet,we can no longer look to only half of the population. Young girls cannot possibly consider opportunities they do not know exist. If girls are not exposed to certain subject and career paths, they are highly unlikely to choose to follow them in college.
Our bias(偏见)toward girls9 either from families or from schools ,is so rooted in our culture that we often don’t even recognize it. Although the situation Has changed greatly in the past 20 or 30 years, there is still a sense that girls aren't as good at math 9 for instance 9 even though there is almost no evidence to support such a belief.
It is important that as a society we deal with gender stereotypes long before young people are faced with a decision to declare or choose a major in college. Without making efforts to break them, we are limiting the potentials of our youth, both male and female. Providing the necessary resources, exposure , and encouragement would help young women understand that their gender shouldnt determine the career path they choose, and that pursuing a STEM career does not make them less feminine.
