A few months before I was born, my dad met a stranger who was new to our small town. From the beginning, my dad was fascinated with this new?comer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around to welcome me into the world a few months later.

As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. He was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies.

If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predict the future ! He took my family to the first major league ball game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped talking? but my dad didn't seem to mind.

My dad was a non-smoker and he didn't permit alcohol at home, even for cooking. But the stranger encouraged us to try them on a regular basis. He made cigarettes look cool. His comments were sometimes unpleasant and sometimes suggestive.

I now know that my early concepts(观念)about relationships were influ?enced strongly by the stranger. Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet he was seldom rebuked(指责)and NEVER asked to leave.

More than fifty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our family. Still, if you were to walk into my parents' house today, you would still find him sitting over in the corner, waiting for someone to listen to him and watch him draw his pictures. His name? We just call him "TV".

Cooking food over a smoky fire is found everywhere in the world. It is often difficult to find wood for the fire. People who do not have wood must spend large amounts of money on cooking fuel. However, there is a much easier way to cook food using energy from the sun. Solar cookers , or ovens , have been used for centuries. A Swiss scientist made the first solar oven in 1767. Today, people are using solar cookers in many countries around the world. People use solar ovens to cook food and to heat drinking water to kill bacteria and other harmful organisms.

There are three kinds of solar ovens. The first is a box cooker. It is designed with a special wall that shines or reflects sunlight into the box. Heat gets trapped under a piece of glass or plastic covering the top of the cooker. A box oven is effective for slow cooking of large amounts of food.

The second kind of solar oven is a panel (嵌板式) cooker. It includes several flat walls, or panels, which directly reflect the sun's light onto the food. The food is inside a separate container of plastic or glass that traps heat energy. People can build panel cookers quickly and with very few supplies. They do not cost much. In Kenya, for example, panel cookers are being manufactured for just two dollars.

The third kind of solar oven is a parabolic (抛物线的)cooker. It has rounded walls that aim sunlight directly into the bottom of the oven. Food cooks quickly in parabolic ovens. However, these cookers are hard to make. They must be re-aimed often to follow the sun. Parabolic cookers can also cause burns and eye injuries if they are not used correctly.

You can make solar ovens from boxes or heavy-paper. They will not catch fire. Paper burns at 232 degrees Celsius. A solar cooker never gets that hot. Solar ovens cook food at low temperatures over long periods of time. This permits people to leave food to cook while they do other things.

To learn more about solar cooking, you can write to Solar Cookers International. The postal address is nineteen-nineteen Twenty- First Street , Sacramento , California, nine-five-eight-one-one, USA. Or you can visit the group's Internet website. The address is www. solarcooking. org.

Running like the wind, roaring (咆哮)like thunder ,tigers have long been feared and respected as a king of the animal world. But last week a report said that there are no more than 30 wild tigers left in South China.

This was the conclusion of a team of scientists from China's State Forestry Administration and the World Nature Fund.

The South China tiger, also known as the Chinese tiger, is native to the .southern China. In the 1950s, there were over 4, 000 tigers found in mountain forests in the country. But due to the destruction of their natu?ral habitat and uncontrolled hunting, it has been pushed on to the list of the world's top ten most endangered species.

Sixty-six of the big cats can be found in the cages of a dozen zoos around China. But they are nothing like their wild cousins. They have lost their natural skills such as hunting and killing. If they were set free they could not look after themselves.

"Breeding has damaged the quality of the species," said Pei Enle, deputy director of the Shanghai Zoo.

To reintroduce the species into the wild, the coun?try started a programme to send five to ten young tigers to South Africa. Four of them have already arrived. Progress has been made as two elder tigers have recov?ered some of their instincts (本能)and can hunt wild animals by themselves at the African base.

"South Africans are very experienced in reintrodu?cing big animals to the wild. The country has very good natural conditions for the tigers to learn in," said Lu Jun, office director of the National Wildlife Research and Development Centre. "We tried in Fujian Province, but it was not successful as there was not a complete eco-chain (生物链)and there was a lack of space.,,

These tigers should return to China in 2007 when the reservations in Fujian are ready.

1. What is the main reason for the South China tiger be?coming one of the world's top ten most endangered species?

C.    Because there is no space for it.

D.    Because of the uncontrolled hunting and destroyed natural living conditions.

2.    How is the programme of sending several tigers to South Africa getting on?

A.    Its effect still remains to be seen.

B.    Two tigers can already compete with their wild cousins.

C.    Some of the tigers are already on the road to recovering their natural skills.

D.    The tigers should be able to recover their instincts completely by 2007.

3.    By saying "but they are nothing like their wild cousins" ,the writer means that    .

A.    they are no longer feared by other wild animals

B.    they don't know how lo hunt or kill

C.    a complete change has resulted in the species because of breeding

D.    to reintroduce them into the wild has become an urgent task

4.    What is the purpose of sending young tigers to South Africa?

A.    To help the tigers recover their ability to live in the wild.

B.    To provide them with a better environment.

C.    To get the tigers to go on a tour.

D.    To find a complete eco-chain for them.
