Recent studies have shown that challenging your brain, by spurring (刺激) the brain to create new patterns, is very important to keep your brain active and healthy as you age. Lifelong learning is a health club for our minds, bodies and spirits. This is why we parents should also teach our children to be lifelong learners. Dr. Marilyn Price-Mitchell, an American psychologist, and youth development expert, shares some ways for us to do this.

1. Ask questions.

When your child asks you a question, don't answer it straight away. Instead, help him or her bring up “questions that pique their curiosity.” This way, we help children make connections between what they're learning at school and the world beyond their classroom. We also show them that learning does not, and should not, end when one is “done with school” — it's actually a lifelong process!

2. Let them fail.

Our kids love learning about different scientific concepts (概念) viaThe Magic School Busvideos on YouTube. And one of the characters, Miss Frizzle (the science teacher) always says this phrase: “Take chances, make mistakes, and get messy.” I always quote (引述) her when the kids say they're afraid to do or learn something because they might do it wrong or make a mistake. If we don't allow our kids to fail, they won't be able to learn to “use mistakes and failures to make lifelong learning easier,” as Dr. Price-Mitchell says.

3. Learn through experience.

This is very true for all of us, especially children. In the words of Dr. Price-Mitchell, “Learning through experience, not just from books, is one of the best ways to give the youth the skills they need for lifelong learning, living, and working in the 21st century.”

Of course, we should also set an example for our children — by learning continuously, and expanding our knowledge and experiences.

C. Balance.

D. Prevent.

2What's the author's attitude to what Miss Frizzle always says?

C. If you don't learn to think when you are young, you may never learn.

【题目】What is a six-letter word that immediately comes to mind when you need some information on the Internet? You probably thought of Google. But Google wasn’t always the name of the famous search engine. In fact, the original name was BackRub!

BackRub was the name two graduate students gave to the new search engine they developed in 1996. They called it BackRub because the engine used backlinks to measure the popularity of Web sites. Later, they wanted a better name a name that suggests huge quantities of data. They thought of the word googol. (A googol is a number followed by 100 zeros.) When they checked the Internet registry of names to see if googol was already taken, one of the students misspelled the word by mistake, and that’s how Google was born.

Google is just one example of a name change in the business world. Many other companies have decided to change their names or the names of their products. Here are some more examples:

Jerry Yang and David Filo, two young computer specialists, developed a guide to Internet content in 1994. They called it “Jerry and David’s Guide to World Wide Web.” But they soon realized that this wasn’t a very catchy name, so they searched through a dictionary and found a better one: “Yahoo.”

Sometimes companies change their names because of the popularity of one of their products. In 1962, a young runner named Phil Knight started a company called Blue Ribbon Sports. In 1971, Knight decided to design and manufacture his own brand of shoes. He named the shoes after the Greek goddess of victory Nike. Nike shoes became so well known that Knight changed the name of the whole company to Nike.

【题目】阅读理解。

You know how wonderful you are, and you know that others know how wonderful you are, but what do you do when admiration crosses over the line into jealousy (嫉妒)? For most teens there will come a day when you realize that one of your friends is jealous and that this jealousy is hurting your friendship. When this happens it can seem like there is nothing that you can do, but the good news is that there is. Don't let jealousy spoil your friendship. Deal with it confidently and you might be back to normal much sooner than you think.

It can be hard to walk up to a friend and ask them what the problem is, but if you want to save your friendship you'll have to do just that. Don't approach them and ask why they are jealous of you unless of course you want to appear totally conceited (逞能的), just take some time alone with them and let them know that you've been feeling like there's been something coming between you. If they refuse to respond, then use the opportunities to explain how you have been feeling. Chances are that something you say will strike a nerve and your friend will open up as well.

When you figure out what is annoying your friend, ask him or her what (s)he thinks would make the situation better. If, for example, (s)he says that (s)he feels like (s)he doesn't get to spend any time with you because of your being off with your new friends from the swim team then maybe you could invite him or her along the next time or block off one day a week for just the two of you. Remember, though, that whatever solution you decide on should be a compromise. Don't limit your own talents or opportunities simply because your friend is unhappy. Try instead to include him or her in your new life and see how that works out.

Even the best of friendships can be ruined by jealousy. This destructive emotion is rarely productive and can turn best friends into worst enemies. Before taking extreme action, chat with your jealous friend to see if the two of you can work out a compromise. If you can't, be prepared to know exactly how far you will go to keep your friend and how far you won't.

【1】According to the author, the jealousy emotion is ________.

A.normal B.productive

C.destructive D.extreme

【2】What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 2?

A.How to solve the problem of jealousy.

B.Why we need to solve the problem of jealousy.

C.How to explain your jealousy to your friends.

D.Why it is hard to deal with the problem of jealousy.

【3】What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?

A.There's always a solution to solve the problem of jealousy.

B.Jealousy can turn best friends into worst enemies.

C.You may lose a friend to keep your own gifts, chances or selfdevelopment.

D.You should go a long way with your friend to work out a solution.

【4】This passage is mainly intended for ________.

A.female readers B.students

C.teenagers D.best friends

【题目】阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后从各题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项。
The British people love talking about the weather. This hot summer, Europe was caught in the heat wave, and many parts of China were also been struggling with record-breaking temperatures. Therefore, there’s plenty for the British people to
get excited about.
But beside from a simple“hot”, what other ways are there to describe the summer heat? Apart from phrases like“boiling hot”, there are many interesting expressions that relate to unbearably hot weather.
Dog days of summer
In books and newspaper articles, the period from early July to mid-August is often referred to as the“dog days of summer”. Some think the expression means the weather is so hot that dogs go wild. But in fact, the expression comes from 16 th century and refers to the days on which Sirius(天狼星)—the Dog Star—rises at the same time as the sun. The Romans associated the hot weather with this star and would sacrifice a dog every year in April to stop the anger of Sirius.
So hot you can fry an egg on the sidewalk
This expression needs no explanation and although its origin is unclear, it hasn’t stopped thousands of curious tourists from testing if the saying is true, with the result that sidewalks in Death Valley, California—the hottest place in the US—are now littered with broken eggshells. Early in July, the local government asked tourists to stop their cooking experiments. Even so, it is actually possible to fry an egg on the sidewalk, so long as you use a frying pan with a lid and the temperature is at least 49℃.
(1)What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Some expressions about hot weather.
B.The heat wave in the world.
C.Sirius is associated with the hot weather.
D.Death Valley—the hottest place in the US.
(2)According to the passage, how long does“dog days of summer”last?
A.About one month.
B.About two months.
C.About two months and a half.
D.About one month and a half.
(3)What caused broken eggshells littered around sidewalks in Death Valley?
A.The hot weather.
B.The curiosity of tourists.
C.The permission of the local government.
D.The origin of the expression.
(4)Which of the following is NOT necessary to test the last expression about hot weather?
A.On the sidewalk.
B.A frying pan with a lid.
C.The temperature(≥49℃).
D.In the hottest place.
