An Open Letter to an Editor

I had an interesting conversation with a reporter recently one who works for you. In fact, he’s one of your best reporters. He wants to leave.

Your reporter gave me a copy of his résumé (简历) and photocopies of six stories that he wrote for you. The headlines showed you played them proudly. With great enthusiasm, he talked about how he finds issues, approaches them, and writes about them, which tells me he is one of your best. I’m sure you would hate to lose him.

Surprisingly, your reporter is not unhappy. In fact, he told me he really likes his job. He has a great assignment, and said you run a great paper. It would be easy for you to keep him, he said. He knows that the paper values him. He appreciates the responsibility you’ve given him, takes ownership of his profession, and enjoys his freedom.

So why is he looking for a way out?

He talked to me because he wants his editors to demand so much more of him. He wants to be pushed, challenged, coached to new heights.

The reporter believes that good stories spring from good questions, but his editors usually ask how long the story will be, when it will be in, where it can play, and what the budget is.

He longs for conversations with an editor who will help him turn his good ideas into great ones. He wants someone to get excited about what he’s doing and to help him turn his story idea upside down and inside out, exploring the best ways to report it. He wants to be more valuable for our paper. That’s what you want for him, too, isn’t it?

So your reporter has set me thinking.

Our best hope in keeping our best reporters, copy editors, photographers, artists everyone is to work harder to make sure they get the help they are demanding to reach their potential. If we can’t do it, they’ll find someone who can.

【解析】

试题分析:本文是一封写给编辑的公开信,信中提出了希望编辑能够把记者的好的想法变成现实。

【1】C判断推理题。根据文章第五段第二句He wants to be pushed, challenged, coached to new heights.

He longs for conversations with an editor who will help him turn his good ideas into great ones. He wants someone to get excited about what he’s doing and to help him turn his story idea upside down and inside out, exploring the best ways to report it.可知他希望自己的编辑能够帮助他把一些好的想法变成现实,并探索最好的方法把故事报道出来。也就是说他想他的编辑帮助改善他的那些好的观点。故D正确。

【3】A 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段Our best hope in keeping our best reporters, copy editors, photographers, artists everyone is to work harder to make sure they get the help they are demanding to reach their potential. If we can’t do it, they’ll find someone who can可知这里的we就是指作者.句意:我们最大的希望就是有最好的记者,最好的编辑等。说明作者就是报社的内部人士,排除BD项。作者是为一位记者提出要求的。说明作者应该是报社的管理人员,故A正确。

Perhaps you think you could easily add to your happiness with more money. Strange as it may seem, if you're unsatisfied, the issue is not a lack of means to meet your desires but a lack of desires—not that you cannot satisfy your tastes but that you don't have enough tastes.

Real riches consist of welldeveloped and hearty capacities(能力) to enjoy life. Most people are already swamped(淹没) with things. They eat, wear, go and talk too much. They live in too big a house with too many rooms, yet their house of life is a hut.

Your house of life ought to be a mansion(豪宅), a royal palace. Every new taste, every additional interest, every fresh enthusiasm adds a room. Here are several rooms your house of life should have.

Art should be a desire for you to develop simply because the world is full of beautiful things. If you only understood how to enjoy them and feed your spirit on them, they would make you as happy as to find plenty of ham and eggs when you're hungry.

Literature, classic literature, is a beautiful, richly furnished room where you might find many an hour of rest and refreshment. To gain that love would go towards making you a rich person, for a rich person is not someone who has a library but who likes a library.

Music like Mozart's and Bach's shouldn't be absent. Real riches are of the spirit. And when you've brought that spirit up to where classical music feeds it and makes you a little drunk, you have increased your thrills and bettered them. And life is a matter of thrills.

Sports, without which you remain poor, mean a lot in life. No matter who you are, you would be more human, and your house of life would be better supported against the bad days, if you could, and did, play a bit.

Whatever rooms you might add to your house of life, the secret of enjoying life is to keep adding.
