This year, about 2,300 teenagers from all over the world will spend about 10 months in US homes. At the
same time about 1,300 American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and learn the rest
of the world.
Here is a 2-way student exchange in action. Fred, 19, spent last year in Germany with George's family.
In turn, George's son Mike spent a year in Fred's home in America.
Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived. But after 2 months of studying, the
language became easy for him. School was completely different from what he had expected and it was much
harder. Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took 14 subjects instead of 6 that
were usually taken in the US.
Family life, too, was different. The father's word was the law. All the activities were done with the family
rather than individually. Fred found the food to be too simple at first. He also missed having a car.
"Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out to have a good time. In Germany, you walk but
you soon learn to like it."
At the same time, in America, Mike, a friendly German boy, was also forming his own ideas. "I suppose
I should criticize American schools." he says, "It is far too easy for our level but I have to say that I like it a
lot in Germany, we do nothing buy study. Here we take part in many other activities. I think that maybe
American schools are better in training their citizens. There ought to be some middle ground between the two."

Your parents always tell you that a solid education is the key to a successful future. For those of you that
will be graduating from high school, the commitment (承诺) you made to complete your schooling has been
fulfilled. Another few years in some college classroom just doesn't sound too attractive; so what are your
choices? Let's see, Choice 1-You can live with your parents, leech on to them, and basically do nothing. Or
Choice 2-You could get yourself a job. Of course, there are other choices, but for this little discussion, we'll
just suppose that they aren't relevant.
Okay, so Choice 2 is obviously going to be more productive. You're finally into the workplace and will be
entering the real world. What would be a good place to start? Well, hopefully high school helped to give you
some sort of an idea of what type of job you would like to enter. If not, then it would be a good idea to speak
with an advisor or a person working in the field you may be interested in before you jump into a job that you
won't like. Gaining knowledge on a particular line of work beforehand can be very effective by helping you in
your search to find that job that you will enjoy doing. Another reason to research jobs and get some hands on
work is related to the fact that it will also be helpful in buffing up your resume and providing you with some
valued experience. Internships (见习) or volunteering are usually a good place to start.
If you are ready to begin a job after high school, the main benefits will clearly be saving money from high
college expense and happily making a living in your chosen jobs. From another point of view, jumping into the
workplace is sometimes the only way to see for yourself if you are ready to work a 40-hour week yet. If you
decide that full time work is not what you are ready for, then this may suggest that you should go back to
school and get a degree. Besides, a college degree will usually equal higher wages.

When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense, and there are changes in
the chemicals in its blood stream. If the danger continues, it will defend itself, or it will run away as fast
as possible. Something like this also happens to people.
When we are excited, angry, scared or aroused by other emotions, our bodies go through many physical
changes, all of which make us more alert and ready to react. We, too, get ready to defend ourselves or run.
Human beings, however, have a problem that animals never face. If we give way to our feelings and let them
take over, we can get into trouble. Have you ever said something in anger-or hit somebody-and regretted it
later? Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told somebody you were lonely, or said you were in love, and then
wished later you had kept your mouth shut? It isn't always wise to express your feelings freely.
Does this mean that it's smarter always to hide our feelings? No! If you keep the feelings of anger,
sadness, and bitterness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense. Physical illnesses can develop,
and you can feel disturbed badly inside. It can actual1y be bad for your health.
Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside don't just go away. It's as if you bought some bananas and stuck
them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but before long you'd smell them. And if you opened
the cupboard, chances are that you'd see little fruit flies hovering all over them. They'd be rotten.
You can try to treat emotions as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can
pretend they don't exist, but they'll still be around. And at last you'll have to deal with them, just like those
bananas.
1. By taking a cat as an example, the author wants to show us that _____.
[     ]
A. animals can't control their feelings
B. people can't control their feelings
C. people's physical reactions are like those of animals in a way
D. our bodies go through many physical changes in certain situations
2. It's mentioned in the passage that human beings get into trouble because _____.
[     ]
A. we are not as alert as animals
B. we sometimes can't control our feelings
C. we always do something wrong to other people
D. we don't pay attention to our physical changes
3. The author wants to tell us in the last two paragraphs that _____.
[     ]
A. we won't be able to completely get away from our feelings
B. we should treat emotions like bananas in a cupboard
C. feelings will gradually disappear when we hold them in
D. it's good for our health to keep pleasant feelings
4. What would be the best title for the passage?
[     ]
A. Frightened Cats and Human Beings
B. Feelings and Bananas
C. Deal with Feelings Wisely
D. Express Feelings Freely

Why do men die earlier than women? The latest research makes it known that the reason could be that
men's hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age.
The largest study of the effects of ageing on the heart has found that women's longevity may be linked
to the fact that their hearts do not lose their pumping power with age.
"We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age,"
said the head of the study, David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.
"Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat. Between the age of 20 and 70, one-third
of those cells die and are not replaced in men," said Goldspink. "This is part of the ageing process."
What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70-year-old
woman's heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one's.
"This gender difference might just explain why women live longer than men," said Goldspink. They
studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80, focusing on healthy persons
to remove the confusing influence of disease."The team has yet to find why ageing takes a greater loss on the
male heart," said Goldspink.
The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise. Goldspink stressed
that women also need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles becoming smaller and weaker as they age.
1. The underlined word "longevity" in the second paragraph probably refers to "_____".
[     ]
A. health
B. long life
C. ageing
D. effect
2. The text mainly talks about _____.
[     ]
A. men's heart cells
B. women's ageing process
C. the gender difference
D. hearts and long life
3. According to the text, the UK scientists have known that _____.
[     ]
A. women have more cells than men when they are born
B. women can replace the cells that enable the heart to beat
C. the female heart loses few of the cells with age
D. women never lose their pumping power with age
4. If you want to live longer, you should _____.
[     ]
A. enable your heart to beat much faster
B. find out the reason for ageing
C. exercise regularly to keep your heart healthy
D. prevent your cells from being lost

The modern age is an age of electricity. People are so used to electric lights, radio, televisions, and
telephones that it is hard to imagine what life would be like without them. When there is a power failure,
people grope about in flickering candlelight, cars hesitate in the streets because there are no traffic lights
to guide them, and food spoils in silent refrigerators.
Yet, people began to understand how electricity works only a little more than two centuries ago. Nature
has apparently been experimenting in this field for million of years. Scientists are discovering more and more
that the living world may hold many interesting secrets of electricity that could benefit humanity.
All living cells send out tiny pulses of electricity. As the heart beats, it sends out pulses of record; they
form an electrocardiogram, which a doctor can study to determine how well the heart is working. The brain,
too, sends our brain waves of electricity, which can be recorded in an electroencephalogram. The electric
currents generated by most living cells are extremely small, often so small that sensitive instruments are needed
to record them. But in some animals, certain muscle cells have become so specialized as electrical generators
that they do not work as muscle cells at all. When large numbers of these cells are linked together, the effects
can be astonishing.
The electric eel is an amazing storage battery. It can send a jolt of as much as eight hundred volts of
electricity through the water in which it lives. (An electric house current is only one hundred and twenty volts,
but two hundred and twenty volts in China.) As many as four-fifths of all the cells in the electric eel's body are
specialized for generating electricity, and the strength of the shock it can deliver corresponds roughly to length
of its body.
1. Electricity was invented ______.
[     ]
A. when man had no candles
B. about 200 years ago
C. to be operating computers
D. by Thomse Edison
2. The following things can send out pulses of electricity except ______.
[     ]
A. electric eels and human hearts
B. Electrical generators and animal muscle
C. Stones and dry wood
D. human brain and living cells
3. The electric current send out by an eel can be ______.
[     ]
A. as much as 800 volts
B. about one hundred and twenty volts
C. as high as the house current in China
D. stored in the water where it lives
4. From this shot passage we can infer ______.
[     ]
A. the shorter an eel is, the stronger electricity it produces
B. we can always feel the electricity produced by living cells
C. human beings get their knowledge about electricity from nature
D. people learn about electricity from eels

Today, the world is rapidly urbanizing. With half of the world population expected to live in cities by
the early part of the 21st century, the Shanghai 2010 World Expo's focus on a better city bears
profound meaning.
What might future cities look like 28 years from now? Here are some scenarios: things to come, things
to go.
     Zero waste
Waste disposal is one of the biggest headaches for cities.Apart from recyclable waste, everything is
buried or incinerated, only to pollute the environment.Plastic waste remains underground for several
decades. The world produces much more garbage that it can dispose of.
Now at the Expo, all waste is delivered to a compression station where the waste is sorted, filtered,
decontaminated, deodorized and compressed before finally being disposed of at designated spots. In
Beijing, people living in the Asuwei area turn their household waste into organic fertilizers which are
used to grow plants at residence communities.
No more transportation problems during Spring Festival
The Spring Festival, the most important Chinese holiday when everyone returns home, has caused
headaches for millions of Chinese.More than 2 billion people travel at the same time, making obtaining
travel tickets and the journey difficult.
But in 28 years.Spring Festival travel may not be a problem at all.China plans to have more than
120,000 kilometers of railway and a rapid transportation network that will serve 90 percent of the
population by 2020.And because most of China will be cities, people will not have to go to other
places to find a job, so migration will no longer be so large-scale.
     Newspapers to disappear
American scholar Philip Meyer predicts that newspaper will come to an end in 2043.Utagawa
Reizou, former editor-in-chief of The Mainichi Daily News.believes that the newspaper will be gone
in 2030. This kind of  prediction may worry those in print news business. In the U.K., the circulations
of  national newspapers are declining. Major Japanese newspapers have gone into debt. In the US,
declining circulations and ad revenues have forced several newspapers to stop printing paper
     Editions
Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch thinks the future of media relies on interaction through the Internet.
In the future, digital newspapers will be sent to portal web terminals through wirelessly.Readers can
discuss issues with journalists and editors.Information will move faster.
     Oil to run out
In August 2009, Fatih Birol, chief  economist of the International Energy Agency, said that oil is
running out faster than expected and that the world will likely feel the tightness in supply in the next five
years. Scientists have found substitutes for oil as fuel, coal, natural gas, solar power, nuclear power and
even water can replace oil as sources of energy.Flammable ice reserves alone can support humans for
the next 1,000 years.

American cities are similar to other cities around the world:In every country, cities reflect the values of
the culture.American cities are changing, just as American society is changing.
After World War ?, the population of most large American cities decreased; however, the population
in many Sun Belt cities increased.Los Angeles and Houston are cities where population shifts(转移)to and
from the city reflects the changing values of American society. In the late 1940s and early 1950s,city
residents(居民)became wealthier. They had more children so they needed more space. They moved out of
their apartments in the city to buy their own homes. They bought houses in the suburbs(郊区).
Now things are changing. The children of the people who left the cities in the 1950s are now adults.
Many, unlike their parents, want to live in the cities. They continue to move to Sun Belt cities and older
ones of the Northeast and Midwest. Many young professionals are moving back into the city. They prefer
the city to the suburbs because their jobs are there; or they just enjoy the excitement and possibilities that
the city offers.
This population shift is bringing problems as well as benefits.Countless poor people must leave their
apartments in the city because the owners want to sell the buildings or make apartments for sale instead of
for rent.In the 1950s, many poor people did not have enough money to move to the suburbs; now many of
these same people do not have enough money to stay in the cities.
Only a few years ago, people thought that the older American cities were dying. Some city residents
now see a bright, new future.Others see only problems and conflicts. One thing is sure:many dying cities
are alive again.

A.They are alive.
B.They are hopeless.

2.Why did American city residents want to live in the suburbs after World War ??
A.Because older American cities were dying.
B.Because they were richer and needed more space.
C.Because cities contained the worst parts of society.

3.According to the 4th paragraph,a great many poor people in American cities________.
A.are faced with housing problems
B.are forced to move to the suburbs
C.want to sell their buildings
D.need more money for daily expenses
4.We can conclude from the text that________.
