My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of a lot of clothes that wouldn¡¯t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn¡¯t get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed.

Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(¾²µç)noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(¼¡Èâ)shaking my set.

When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.

Have you ever run into a careless cell phone user on the street? Perhaps they were busy talking, texting or checking updates on WeChat (΢ÐÅ) without looking at what was going on around them. As the number of this new ¡°species¡± of human has kept rising, they have been given a new name ¡ª phubbers (µÍÍ·×å).

Recently, a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of people under the spotlight. In the short film, phubbers with various social identities bury themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his cell phone while letting his patient die, a pretty woman takes selfie (×ÔÅÄ) in front of a car accident site, and a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone. A chain of similar events eventually leads to the destruction of the world.

Although the ending sounds overstated, the damage phubbing can bring is real. Your health is the first to bear the effect and result of it. ¡°Constantly bending your head to check your cell phone could damage your neck,¡± Guangming Daily quoted doctors as saying. ¡°The neck is like a rope that breaks after long-term stretching.¡± Also, staring at cell phones for long periods of time will damage your eyesight gradually, according to the report.

But that¡¯s not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your friends and family. At reunions with family or friends, many people tend to stick to their cell phones while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange atmosphere, Qilu Evening News reported.

It can also cost you your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their cell phones in broad daylight.

D. To warn doctors against using cell phones while treating patients.

2.Which of the following is NOT a risk(ΣÏÕ£©a phubber may have?

A. His social skills could be affected.

B. His neck and eyesight will be gradually harmed.

C. He will cause the destruction of the world.

D. He might get separated from his friends and family.

3.Which of the following may be the author¡¯s attitude towards phubbing?

A. Supportive.B. Opposed.C. Optimistic.D. Objective.

4.What may the passage talk about next?

A. Advice on how to use WeChat.

B. People addicted to phubbing.

C. Measures to reduce the risks(Σº¦) of phubbing.

D. Results of phubbing.

Children grow quickly, especially their feet, but many families cannot buy new shoes each time a child needs them. As a result, about 300 million children around the world go barefoot. Those children risk picking up diseases and parasites from the soil.

An American man may have a solution for those barefoot kids ¡ª a shoe that grows with the child. Kenton Lee is the creator of The Shoe That Grows. He explains how the shoe works and how it is able to last so long.

¡°It grows in three places: the front; it can also grow on the side with Velcro; and on the back with our buckle. It can last up to five years. The bottom is compressed rubber like tire rubber. The top is just high-quality leather.¡± The shoe comes in two sizes: small that fits children aged 4 to 9 and large for children aged 9 to 14.

Lee says he got the idea for the shoe while working as a volunteer in an orphanage in Kenya. ¡°¡ and there was a little girl in a white dress walking next to me. And I just remember looking down and seeing how small her shoes were. They were just way too small for her feet. They were so small that she had to cut open the front of her shoes to let her toes stick out. And I just remember thinking, wouldn't it be nice if there were a pair of shoes that could grow with her feet?¡±

However, Lee says it was not easy to turn his idea into a reality. ¡°I kept writing down I should do this because of this or because of that. All these reasons why it really was important for me to try to make the shoes that could grow and try to help.¡± Finally, in 2009 Lee founded a non-profit organization called Because International. In the office of Because International, Lee keeps a pair of his own shoes to help him remember his promise. ¡°I told myself I would not get new shoes until the idea was done. So, those are the shoes that I wore for a little over five years.¡±

Developing ideas in writhing is the greatest

Developing ideas in writhing is the greatest problem that students face. 36 However, learning how to develop idea in writing, that is, critical thinking¡ªthe ability to think clearly and form a judgment is what proves most difficult for them. Students who have not learned to think critically often have a hard time developing ideas in writing. So, if learning critical thinking is difficult, what can you do?

37 Students, however, should not read without a goal in mind. Students should be active readers by studying how other writers build their arguments. In other words, they should consider the critical thinking of each author they have read. 38 What is the argument that the writer is making? What evidence does the writer use? How does the writer present their ideas? 39 How does the writer evaluate information? 40 It will also help you to think about how you can write better and practice your critical thinking skill, too.

A. Students can learn language rules, vocabulary words, and even how to structure essays.

B. Some students find learning grammar is difficult.

C. Students can start improving their writing and critical thinking skill by reading.

D. How is the writer using the supporting details?

E. The next time you are reading something, try to ask yourself some of the following questions.

F. Asking these questions will give you a point to start understanding how other people think.

G. How is the writer connecting their ideas?
