A qualified doctor who seldom practiced but instead devoted his life to writing. He once said:“Medicine is my lawful(合法的)wife, and literature is my lover.” Russian writer Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, was a great playwright and one of the masters(大师)of the modern short story.

When Chekhov entered the Moscow University Medical School in 1879, he started to publish hundreds of comic short stories to support his family. After he graduated, he wrote regularly for a local daily newspaper.

As a writer he was extremely fast, often producing a short story in an hour or less.Chekhov's medical and science experience can be seen through the indifference(冷漠)many of his characters show to tragic events. In 1892, he became a full time writer and published some of his most memorable stories.

Chekhov often wrote about the sufferings of life in small town Russia.Tragic events control his characters who are filled with feelings of hopelessness and despair.

It is often said that nothing happens in Chekhov's stories and plays. He made up for this with his exciting technique for developing drama within his characters.Chekhov's work combined the calm attitude of a scientist and doctor with the sensitivity(敏感)of an artist.

Some of Chekhov's works were translated into Chinese as early as the 1940s.One of his famous stories, The Man in a Shell(《装在套子里的人》), about a school teacher's extraordinarily orderly life, was selected as a text for Chinese senior students.

Dr. Carl Sagan has been a leader in space exploration. He is an astronomer at Cornell University and director of the Laboratory for Planetary Studies. The author talked with Dr. Carl Sagan about how he became an astronomer.

Q: At the age of five did you know what the stars were?

A: I didn't know what they were, so I asked my friends and some older children, I got answers like “They're lights in the sky, kid.”That wasn't much of an answer. What were they? Were they little electric light bulbs(灯泡) held by black wires you couldn't see?

Q: If there are creatures living on another planet, what do you think they would look like?

A: I can't imagine what they'd look like, and they couldn't imagine what we'd look like. All of life on Earth is the same, except for some external(外部的) differences in form. Every one of us on Earth, from bacteria(细菌) to human being; is made up of the same kinds of proteins and the same kinds of nucleic acids(核酸). But on another planet, everything is different, and I would expect that the organisms would be totally different from us.

Q: Do you think we should have a manned mission(工作团)to Mars?

A: I don't think there's any reason to send people to Mars if our goal is to find out about Mars. Let's send robots instead. They're cheaper. There's no risk of human lives. Robots can go to more dangerous places. But I think there are reasons for sending people there that are not connected to finding out about Mars. Planning for a manned mission to Mars would force us to improve some of our technology. It would encourage the major technological nations to come together for the project. Space flight also speaks to something deep within us. A human mission to Mars would provide a sense of adventure. It would help to stimulate a new generation of scientists, and it would make all people feel a little more optimistic about what we can do as a planet.

Q: What advice would you give a young person who wants to be an astronomer?

A: I'd say,“Study physics. But before you can study physics you have to know mathematics, so study mathematics.”I would also encourage them to read a lot, be curious, and ask questions.

1.As a boy, Carl Sagan didn't ________.

[ ]

A.often ask questions

B.always get satisfying answers from his friends

C.try to do well in physics

D.read a lot

2.We human beings are interested in finding life on another planet because ________.

[ ]

A.we are naturally drawn to other things that are alive and are curious about them.

B.most of us want to have more friends.

C.some of us are eager to rule the universe

D.scientists want to show how modem our technology is

3.Robots can be sent to Mars because ________.

[ ]

A.we have enough robots

B.they're strong and big

C.everything is easy to them

D.some duties are too dangerous for human being to fulfill

4.A manned mission to Mars ________.

[ ]

A.is reasonable if the goal is to collect information

B.is O.K. if robots are sent as well

C.can make us improve some technology to prepare for it

D.can make strong nations come together

5.Which of the following statements is true?

[ ]

A.Carl Sagan is an astronaut.

B.Carl Sagan used to ask friends silly questions.

C.Carl Sagan thinks we can't imagine what creatures on another planet look like until they can imagine our appearance.

D.Carl Sagan encourages young people interested in astronomy to work hard at physics as well as mathematics.

Intelligence Quotient

I.Q.stands for “Intelligence Quotient” which is a measure of a person's intelligence found by means of an intelligence test. Before marks gained in such a test can be useful as information about a person, they must be compared with some standard, or norm(规范).It is not enough simply to know that a boy of thirteen has scored, say, ninety marks in a particular test.To know whether he is clever, average or dull, his marks must be compared with the average achieved by other boys of thirteen in that test.

In 1906 the psychologist, Alfred Binet(1857--1911), devised the standard by which intelligence has since been assessed.Binet was asked to find a method of selecting all children in the schools of Paris who should be taken out of ordinary classes and put in special classes for defectives(后进生).The problem made him realize the need for a standard for measuring intelligence, and he hit upon the very simple concept of “mental age”.

First of all, he invented a variety of tests and put large numbers of children of different ages through them.He then found at what age each test was passed by the average child. For instance, he found that the average child of seven could count backwards from 20 to 1 and the average child of three could repeat the sentence:“We are going to have a good time in the country.” Billet arranged the various tests in order of difficulty, and used them as a scale against which he could measure every individual. If, for example, a boy aged twelve could only do tests that were passed by the average boy of nine, Binet held that he was three years below average, and that he had a mental age of nine.

The concept of mental age provided Binet, and through him, other psychologists, with the required standard. It enabled him to state scores in intelligence tests in terms of a norm merely by subtracting(减去)the “mental” age of a child from his “chronological” age(实际年龄).Then the boy in the example given would be “three years retarded”(迟缓、耽误).Later the “mental ratio” was introduced; that is to say, the ratio of the mental age to the chronological age. Thus a boy of twelve with a mental age of nine has a mental ratio of 0.75.

The “mental age” measurement was then replaced by the more famous I.Q(intelligence quotient). The “I.Q.” is the mental ratio multiplied by 100.For example, a boy of twelve with a mental age of nine has an “I.Q.” of 75.Clearly, since the mental age of the average child is equal to the chronological age, the average “I.Q.” is 100.

(1)

To judge a child's intelligence, his marks in a test must be compared with marks gained by ________.

[ ]

A.

others of the same age

B.

children of different ages

C.

a number of children aged thirteen

D.

the same child at different ages

(2)

Binet used a large number of children in his tests because he wanted to find out ________.

[ ]

A.

who were the most stupid

B.

the defectives

C.

what a bright child could do

D.

a norm

(3)

The purpose of I.Q.test is to find out ________.

[ ]

A.

whether one has the intelligence of thirteen-year-old children

B.

whether one is tall enough for his age

C.

whether one is clever, average or dull

D.

whether one is mature enough for his age
