This is love, hand in hand with you, old age to the old.
I made a promise to myself on the way down to the vacation beach cottage. For two weeks I would try to be a(an)   31  husband and father. Totally loving. No ifs, ands or buts.
The   32   had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The   33  was quoting Biblical passage about husbands and their wives. Then he went on to say, “Love is an   34  of will. A person can choose to love.” To myself, I had to   35  that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would   36 .
And it did,   37  from the moment I kissed Evelyn at the door and said, “That new yellow sweater looks   38  on you.”
“Oh, Tom, you noticed,” she said,   39  and pleased. Maybe a little puzzled.   40  the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Evelyn   41  a walk on the beach. I started to refuse,   42
then I thought she wanted to be alone with me.” We walked on the beach while the   43  flew their kites.
So it went. Two weeks of not calling the firm where I am a director. We visited the shell museum   44  I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that’s how the whole   45  passed. I made a new promise to keep on remembering to choose love.
There was one thing that went   46  with my experiment, however. Evelyn and I still laugh about it today. On the last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Evelyn  47 me.    “What’s the matter?” I asked her.
“Tom,” she said in a(an)   48  voice, “do you know something? I don’t….”
“What do you mean?”
“Well… that   49  I had several weeks ago … our doctor … did he tell you something about me? Am I dying?”
It took a moment for it all to be understood. Then I burst into   50 .
“No, honey,” I said, wrapping her in my arms. “You’re not dying; I’m just starting to live.”

Being less than perfectly well-dressed in a business setting can result in a feeling of discomfort. And the sad truth is that “clothing mismatches” on the job can ruin the day of the person who is wearing the inappropriate attire(着装)—and the people with whom he or she works.
Offices vary when it comes to dress codes. Some businesses have very strict standards for office attire, while others maintain a more relaxed attitude. However, it is always important to remember that no matter what your company’s attitude is, you are working in a business environment and you should dress properly. Certain items may be more appropriate for evening wear than for a business meeting, just as shorts and a T-shirt are better suited for the beach than for an office environment. Your attire should reflect both your environment and your position. A senior president has a different image to maintain than that of a secretary. Like it or not, you will be judged by your appearance.
This is never more apparent than on “dress-down days”, when what you wear can say more about you than any business suit ever could. In fact, people will pay more attention to what you wear on dress-down days than on “business professional ” days. Thus, when dressing in “business casual” clothes, try to put some good taste into your choices, recognize that the “real” definition of business casual is to dress just one notch(等级) down from what you would normally wear on business-professional attire days.
Remember, there are borders between your career and our social life. You should dress one way for play and another way when you mean business. Always ask yourself where you are going and how other people will be dressed when you get there. Is the final destination the opera, the beach, or the office? Dress properly and you will discover the truth in the principle that clothes make the man—and the woman. When you’re in doubt, it’s safe to be on the side of dressing slightly more traditionally than the situation demands.

小题3:Which of the following is NOT the rule offered in the passage about business dress?
A.Dress a bit traditionally if you are not sure about proper dress for an occasion.

C.For a business meeting and a concert, you should dress differently.
D.Ask others for advice when you are not sure about what to dress.

Astronauts on shorter shuttle missions(使命)often work very long days.  Tasks are scheduled so tightly that break times are often used to finish the day’s work.  This type of schedule is far too demanding for long missions on the International  Space Station(ISS).  ISS crewmembers usually live in space for at least a quarter of a year. They work five days on and two days off to mimic the normal way they do things on Earth as much as possible . Weekends give the crew valuable.  Weekends give the crew valuable time to rest and do a few hours of  housework.  They can communicate with family and friends by email , internet phone and through Private video conferences.
While astronauts cannot go to a baseball game or a movie in orbit, there are many familiar activities that they can still enjoy . Before a mission.  The family and friends of each ISS crewmember put together a collection of family photos, messages, videos and reading material for
The astronauts to look at when they will be floating 370 kilometers above the Earth.  During their mission, the crew also receives care packages with CDs, books, magazines, photos and letters . And as from early 2010, the internet became available on the ISS , giving astronauts the chance to do some “web surfing (冲浪)”in  their personal time.  Besides relaxing with these more common entertainments, astronauts can simply enjoy the experience of living in space.

Jean's father was a farm plane pilot in the little farming community in Northern California where she was raised, and _36_Jean was totallyattracted by airplanes and flying.
In her senior year of high school, her English teacher was Mrs. Dorothy Slaton. Mrs. Slaton was a _37_, demanding teacher with high standards and a low _38_ for excuses. She refused to treat her students like _39_, instead expecting them to behave like the _40_ adults they would have to be to succeed in the real world after graduation. Jean was _41_ of her at first but grew to respect her firmness and fairness gradually.
One day Mrs. Slaton gave the class a written _42_. "What do you think you’ll be doing 10 years from now?” Jean’s dream was to be a pilot like her father, but as the years went by, she had been beaten down by the _43_ and negative words she got whenever she talked about her career, so she unwillingly gave it up and wrote something else. Mrs. Slaton collected the papers and nothing more was said. Two weekslater, the teacher handed back the assignments, _44_ the students to face it down on the desk, and asked this question: "If you had enough finances and unlimited _45_, what would you do? Please write it on the _46_ of your previous assignment paper.”
When the students stopped writing, the teacher asked, "How many of you wrote the same thing on _47_ sides of the paper?" Not one hand went up.
The next thing that Mrs. Slaton said changed the course of Jean’s life. The teacher leaned forward _48_ her desk and said, "I have a little secret for you all. You do have _49_ abilities and talents. You do have access to the finest schools, and you can arrange plenty of finances if you want something _50_ enough. This is it! When you leave school, _51_ you don’t go for your dreams, no one will do it for you. You can have _52_ you want if you want it enough.”
What her teacher said touched Jean so much! In the following years, she tried her best to realize her dream of becoming a pilot. Although it didn’t happen _53_, she finally became one of the first three female pilot trainees ever _54_ by United Airlines. Today, Jean Harper is a Boeing 737 captain.
It was the power of one well-placed _55_ word that gave that uncertain young girl the strength and faith to pursue her dream.

Laws to stop tigers, camels, zebras and snakes being used as performing animals in circuses have been announced by the government.
The environment minister, Jim Paice, hoped the laws would be brought in before the end of the parliament in 2015, which is the main law-making institution of the UK. At present between 35 and 50 wild animals are thought to be used by circuses in England and Defra offered to help find new homes for the retired performers.
The announcement follows a campaign by animal charity organization for the ban (禁令), which became worse when a video appeared last year of a circus elephant being beaten by a worker. Campaigners were angry when Paice previously announced tougher licensing instead.
Circus Mondao, whose website shows zebra and camels, said it would probably challenge the suggested ban. The circus is a member of the European Circus Association, which previously challenged Austria's ban, saying there was no scientific evidence (证据) that the animals were harmed by the travelling or conditions. On its website, Mondao says that when it travels animals are the last to be loaded and the first to be unloaded; they are moved to tents within an hour of arriving, and are usually moved 20-50 miles.
Animal charities welcomed the move, but called for ministers to speed up the laws. Asked why circuses would be banned from keeping wild animals but not domestic animals such as horses, a Defra spokesman said a key difference was that domesticated animals were more used to conditions such as travelling. "Wild animals aren't domesticated: we feel it's not right ethically (伦理上) for wild animals to perform," he said.

Every summer, no matter how urgent work schedule is, I take off one day exclusively for my
son. We call it dad-son day. This year our third stop was the amusement panic, where we discovered
that he was tall enough to ride one of the fastest roller coasters (过山车)in the world. We experienced through face-stretching turns and circles for ninety seconds. Then, as we stepped off the ride, in a calm voice, he remarked that it was not as exciting as other rides he’d been on. As I listened, I began to sense something seriously out of balance.
Throughout the season, I noticed similar events all around me. Parents found it hard to find new stimulations for cold kids. Surrounded by ever-greater stimulation, their young feces were looking disappointed and bored
Facing their children’s complaints of "nothing to do", parents were spending large numbers of dollars for various forms of entertainment In many cases the money seemed to do little more than buy relief from the terrible complaint of their bored children. This set me thinking the obvious question: "How can it be so hard for kids to find something to do when there’s been such a range of stimulating entertainment available to them?"
What really worries me is the strength of the stimulation. I watch my little daughter’s &ce as she absorbs bloody special effects in movies.
Why do children facing such excitement seem starved for more? Thai was, I realized, the point I discovered during my own adolescence that what creates excitement is not going fast, but going faster. Excitement has less to do with speed than changes in speed.
I am concerned about the increasing effect of years at these levels of feverish activity. It is no mystery to me why many teenagers appear uninterested and burned out, with a "been there, done that" air of indifference toward much of life. As increasing numbers of friends’ children are advised to take medicine to deal with inattentiveness at school or anti-depressants (抗抑郁药)to help with the loss of interest and joy in their lives—I question the role of kids’ boredom in some of the diagnoses (处方).
My own work is focused on the chemical imbalances and biological factors related to behavioral and emotional disorders. These are complex problems. Yet I’ve been reflecting more and more on how lie pace of life and the strength of stimulation may be contributing to the rising rates of psychological problems among children and adolescents in our society.
