16.Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since.A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away.He can play, catch and hit a ball as well as his son.A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins"Twinkle, twinkle, little star"or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows:Once we have learned something, additional(额外的) learning trials(尝试)increase the length(长度) of time we will remember it.
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them.We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as"Twinkle, twinkle, little star"and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.
The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception(例外) to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.
The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade,is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course.By cramming,a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned.A little overlearning,on the other hand,is really necessary for one's future development.

Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since."
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them",说明作者是通过举例说明的方法来解释这个原理的,故选D.
根据第三段中"The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school"可知,乘法口诀也是过度学习的一个结果,因此这里"them"是指代"过度学习的一个结果",故选A.
The law of over learning explains why cramming (突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade,is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course.By cramming,a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he's likely soon to forget almost everything he learned."

11.Overpopulation is one of the serious problems that the whole world is facing.Many
countries are trying to handle it.Among them,Brazil has become one of the developing world's great successes at reducing population growth-but more by accident than design.While countries such as India have made joint efforts to reduce birth rates,Brazil has had better result without really trying,says George Martine at Harvard.
Brazil's population growth rate has dropped from 2.99% a year between 1951and 1960to 1.93% a year between 1981and 1990,and Brazilian women now have only 2.7children on average.Martine says this figure may have fallen still further since 1990,an achievement that makes it the envy of many other Third World countries.
Martine puts it down to,among other things,soap operas and installment (分期付款) plans introduced in the 1970s.both played an important,although indirect,role in lowering the birth rate.Brazil is one of the world's biggest producers of soap operas.Globo,Brazil's most popular television network,shows three hours of soaps six nights a week,while three others show at least one hour a night.Most soaps are based on wealthy characters living the high life in big cities.
"Although they have never really tried to work in a message towards the problems of reproduction,they describe middle and upper class values-not many children,different attitudes towards sex,women working,"says Martine."They sent this image to all parts of Brazil and made people conscious of other patterns of behavior and other values,which were put into a very attractive package."
Meanwhile,the installment plans tried to encourage the poor to become consumers."This led to an enormous change in consumption (消耗、消费) patterns and consumption was incompatible (不相容的) with unlimited reproduction."Says Martine.

5.We might think we know which colours do what.The idea that red wakes us up or blue calms us down is deeply rooted in Western culture.But do they really change our behaviour in the ways that we assume?
When it comes to scientific research,the results are mixed and at times contested.Some studies have found that people do better on cognitive tasks when faced with red rather than blue or green; others show the opposite.The idea is that if you repeatedly have a particular experience surrounded by a certain colour,then you eventually begin to associate that colour with the way you were feeling or behaving.A school career spent reading your teacher's red writing circling your mistakes forever makes you link red with danger.Blue meanwhile is more likely to be associated with calmer situations like marvelling at a big blue expanse of sky.
Of course there will always be exceptions---the comment from the teacher saying"well done"is also written in red.It is true that people do make different associations with different colours,but whether this translates into behaving in a certain way or succeeding at a particular task is a different question.
In 2009researchers tried to clarify the situation.They sat their participants at computer screens coloured blue,red or"neutral"and tested them on various tasks.With a red screen people did better on tasks requiring attention to detail,but when the screen was blue they did better on creative tasks.In practice this might be tricky.In a classroom you might want to think creatively some of the time and pay attention to detail at others.
However,when another team tried to repeat the study with a larger group of people in 2014,the effect of colour disappeared.The initial study consisted of just 69people.In this new,bigger study,of 263volunteers,background colour made no difference.
So colours might well have an effect, but so far those effects have been difficult to demonstrate consistently and sometimes don't seem to exist at all.
