3.Reading is to success what water is to fish.Apparently every successful person develops a passion for reading. This is because reading is a key element to obtain the information required to understand something. For instance, lawyers have to study and learn every established law on their specific branches.Sometimes the law changes according to people's needs.A good lawyer has to be informed about the latest news in the court.A doctor has to be informed of the latest advances in medicine.
Reading is very important for all mankind.Everything is relative in this world,especially reading.Reading can open many doors and it can lead you into a path of success.Studies have confirmed that reading to your unborn child is very good.This way your child will develop a passion for reading.
How do you develop a passion for reading? There is only one way you can boost your passion for reading.Let me explain this to you.If you want to learn how to ride a bike, you have to get on the bike as many times as possible until you have learned. It works the same way with reading. If you want to boost your reading, take a book and read it all the way through when you finish reading your first book, take another book and do the same.Try to read as much as you can.If you are going out,grab a magazine,a book,an article or something to read.
There is a very important factor behind the reading--reading comprehension.It's what makes you understand the meaning behind the text.Let's assume that you read a document and you are supposed to explain the meaning of the document. How would you explain the document if you couldn't capture (捕捉) the message of the author?

1.In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition.Some value it highly,believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity (繁荣),others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills.For them,playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs.In their single-minded pursuit of success,the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.
However,while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed,others take an opposite attitude.In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players,they strongly blame competition.Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society.Teaching these young people,I often observe in them a desire to fail.They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success.By not trying,they always have an excuse:"I may have lost,but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try."What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost,that would mean a lot.Such a loss would be a measure of their worth.Clearly,this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves.Both are based on the mistaken belief that one's self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others.Both are afraid of not being valued.Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.
67.What does this passage mainly talk about?C
A.Competition helps to set up self-respect.
B.Failures are necessary experiences in competition.
C.Opinions about competition are different among people.
D.Competition is harmful to personal quality development.
68.What does the underlined phrase"the most vocal"in Paragraph 3most probably mean?D
A.Those who try their best to win.
B.Those who value competition most highly.
C.Those who rely on others most for success.
D.Those who are against competition most strongly.
69.What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a desire to fail?A
A.One's worth lies in his performance compared with others.
B.One's achievement is determined by his particular skills.
C.One's success in competition needs great efforts.
D.One's success is based on how hard he has tried.
70.Which point of view may the author agree to?A
A.Fear of failure should be removed in competition.
B.Winning should be a life-and-death matter.
C.Competition should be encouraged.
D.Every effort should be paid back.
8.There is no doubt that a common language used throughout the world would do much to bring countries closer to each other.Though it is becoming increasingly easy to move from place to place,our inability to communicate with one another gives rise to numerous misunderstandings and makes real contact between people of differing nationalities impossible.Many attempts have been made to overcome this problem and they have all failed.The fear of foreign influence and domination rules out the universal acceptance of any one of the existing major languages.Aware of this difficulty,many linguists have constructed artificial languages which could have no possible political overtones (暗示).They have argued that a language of this sort would perform much the same service as Latin did in the Middle Ages.
Although linguists succeeded in making their artificial languages extremely simple so that they would be easy to learn,their efforts seemed   doomed from the start.The reason for this is that there is no real motivation to learn an artificial language.There is nothing to guarantee that everybody is willing to make the effort; there is no assurance that the learner will have any adequate return for his hard work.When people today undertake to learn a foreign language,they are not interested only in speaking it.Mastery of a language makes available to the learner a great deal of worthwhile literature and many current publications.This is the biggest stumbling-block of all for the artificially-constructed tongue.Having no literature of its own,all it can offer is a limited number of translations,which are valueless in themselves.Nor can it acquire any literature;for it would have to be used for a great many generations before this could become possible.Moreover,constant use over a long period would bring into being many'national'dialects and the language would thus defeat its own purpose.
Another serious objection is the fact that a language is shaped by use and not by design.It is a living thing which is forever growing and changing.It takes hundreds of years before it can acquire richness and depth.In an artificial language,however,the meanings of words are rigidly defined.Inflexibility makes for an absence of subtlety (微妙),so that no really fine meaning can be conveyed.Though this quality might be admirable for scientific publications,it greatly slows the formation of any significant literature.Latin was ideal in this respect,for it was a'dead'language with a literature; an artificial one is'dead'from the start.This makes it likely that existing language barriers will remain with us for a very long time.

59.What would be the best title for this passage?C
A.A Solution to Language Barrier

18.There is no question that fewer teenagers are on the roads in the US.
In 1978,50% of 16-year-olds had got their first driving licence. In 2008,according to the US Transportation Department,it was just 30%.The number of those aged 19 and under with driving licences has also been declining since 1978,when 11,989,000 had licence. In 2010,it was 9,932,441,or 4.1% of American drivers.
In the UK,683,273 teenagers have driving licences-just 1.85% of total licence holders, according to Department of Transport figures from September 2010.
But the decline in the US may have more to do with tougher tests and the introduction of the new rule in many states, which force drivers aged under 16 to be with licensed drivers of 21 years and older when driving.
In recent years, the annual number of journeys being made by American drivers of all ages has declined clearly for the first time ever.Car use began falling in 2007,when average petrol prices almost doubled to $4.12 a gallon, and the economy became worse.
But there are signs that it is getting back to normal and American remains a country on wheels. It has a higher number of cars per head of population than any other country in the world.
"Cars will always be a popular means of transportation in America. You have to take into consideration some places don't have access to public transportation.Cars are the only way some people can get around,"says Kristin Nevels. This makes driving necessary in some rural states, where about twice as many teenagers are on the road than in big cities.

B.thinks American people can not live without cars.

66.What can be inferred from the text?B
A.The UK has more teenager drivers than the US.
B.A 15-year-old boy cannot drive alone in the US.
C.The US has very developed bus transportation system.
D.Big cities have more teenager drivers than rural areas in the US.
5.In the United States,it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m.If someone receives a call during sleeping hours,he assumes it's a matter of life and death. The time chosen for the call communications is important.
In social life, time plays a very important part.In the U.S.A.guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the attention to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world,it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from cultures that treat time differently.Promptness (准时) is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S.no one would think of keeping a business friend waiting for an hour.It would be too impolite.A person who is 5 minutes late is expected to make a short apology. If he is less than 5 minutes late,he will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.
62."The same meaning is attached to telephone calls after 11:00p.m."Here"attached"meansC.
A.taken       B.drawn        C.given         D.shown
63.According to this passage, time plays an important role inC.

B.It may be appropriate to send your invitation cards to your guests three or four days before a dinner party date in some countries.
C.It is best for one to make telephone calls at midnight because it costs much less.
D.If one is less than 5 minutes late,he has to make a short apology.
2.A dog-lover has invented a high-tech way of feeding his pet by Twitter(推特,流行社交网络).Computer expert Nat Morris,30,has designed a system to give his pet a"tweet treat"by sending him a Twitter message.
His dog Toby gets some delicious dog biscuits from a computer-controlled food machine whenever Nat sends a message to"@feedtoby".
Nat often works away from home and isn't always able to feed Toby by hand.But his new invention allows Nat to feed his dog from anywhere in the world.
Nat said,"Toby absolutely loves it.At first he didn't know what was going on.Now he sits underneath the machine,wagging his tail and waiting for the treats to drop."
Nat fills the food machine with small pieces of dog biscuits,but not too many in case four-year-old Toby gets too many messages.And Nat has even equipped his house with an online camera so he can see Toby enjoying the food at his home.
But one problem is that friends and family have been so amazed with the"Tweet treat"machine that.they have starting to send tweets to Toby too.So Nat has had to restrict feeding time to make sure Toby doesn't turn into Tubby.
"People have been sending him food at all hours of the day,so I had to limit it to between 9a.m.and 9p.m..I'm thinking of doing an updated one which measures his weight before he is fed,just to make sure he's not putting on too much puppy fat,"explained Nat.
How Nat's Twitter Feeder Works:
When a message is sent to@feedtoby it is received by a mini-computer that is linked to the food machine.
When the mini-computer receives the message,a bell rings and Toby comes running over and sits in front of the feeding machine.Next the machine's motor pulls open a trap door which releases a serving of food.
The doggy biscuits then drops into Toby's food bowl.Finally a digital camera takes a photo of him and sends it back to Nat on Twitter-so he knows Toby has been fed.

25.Nat has invented a high-tech way to feed his dog because heC.

B.He fears the machine will run out of food.
C.He wants hid friends to stop feeding Toby.
D.He doesn't want Toby to be woken up at night.

3.Encouraging pupils to keep noise to a minimum should be a valuable component of all children's education,according to a new research.
Dr.Helen Lees,from Stirling University's school of education,says that"enforced(强制的) silence"is seen as a punishment and often acts to  suppress children's natural ability.But she says that teaching children about the benefits of"enforced silence"-deliberate stillness that gives them the opportunity to focus and reflect in a stress-free environment-can have a significant effect on pupils'concentration and behavior.
It is the latest in a string of researches to establish a link between the classroom environment and pupils'academic ability.
A study almost a decade ago in London found that children's exam results were cut by as much as a third if they were taught in noisy classrooms.Teaching unions have also called for a limit of 26℃to be put on classroom temperatures because teachers and pupils struggle to work in hot conditions,and some educationalists claim that too much clutter(杂乱的东西) on classroom walls can prevent children from concentrating.
Dr.Less said,"When we take some research on school settings and put it all together,what we see is that education without silence does not make much sense.In areas of better learning outcomes,better self-confidence and well-being measures,enforced silence in a person's life and an individual's education is shown throughout the relevant research to be a benefit."
Dozens of schools across Britain have already introduced periods of"reflective silence"into the timetable.
Kevin Houston,head of Sheringdale Primary,south London,has just introduced a minute's silence at the start of twice-weekly meetings in which children are taught breathing techniques and encouraged to reflect.The school plans to introduce it into classrooms every day.
