Dear Mom, Clear My Calendar

September is around the comer, and some of us are already complaining about summer's end. But parents have a special reason to do so. The end of summer means the start of school. And these days, planning a young child’s schedule is a big challenge. The challenge is no longer finding activities to fill a child's day; it is saying no to the hundreds of options available. Our mailbox is filled with brochures urging us to sign our kids up for classes from cooking to martial arts.

Educators are themselves discouraged by the number of special classes that many children attend. In the name of “enrichment”, three-year-olds not only go to preschool in the morning but study French or gymnastics after lunch. One teacher tells of a four-year-old asking for help in the toilet before hurrying off to tennis. Another teacher says that children sometimes hold on to her at pick up time. What happened to unstructured time?

【答案】Nowadays, many parents choose to send children to special classes because of their busy schedules. However, children’s time shouldn’t be occupied this way and parents shouldn’t transfer their own burden to children.

There are many reasons accounting for this phenomenon. In the first place, a generous explanation is that many parents enjoy giving children opportunities they never had. They believe that time spent in these classes is somehow beneficial to children. In the second place, a child’s time doesn’t have to be planned to be meaningful. Some children sleep late and play with the kids across the street until it’s time for dinner. Moreover, with the majority of mothers working, many parents would like to reduce the guilt of spending less time with their children.

In my opinion, parents should be informed how dangerous the situation will be to their children’s development and health. Besides, whatever they involve, there is no excuse for burdening their child.

【题目】请阅读下面图画和短文,并按要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

There was a boss who made a contract with his workers: he will pay their salary each week, but not in cash. Instead, the workers would choose some goods in a shop, which equal the value of their salary. Then he will pay the cash to the owner of the shop.

But one day, one of the workers complained to his boss, “The shop owner said ‘no cash, no goods’. And he requested us to pay in cash.” For that reason, the worker asked the boss to pay him in cash, too. The boss agreed. After a while, the shop owner came to the boss, asking him to pay for his workers.

The boss was confused and looked into the issue, and finally found out that the worker told a lie. However, he paid the shop owner as usual, because he must keep his promise, even he was cheated and had to pay more money.

Good merchants won’t scrap(废除)their contracts. They won’t sign contracts easily and usually chaffer(论价)for their benefits if they have to sign them. But after that, they will definitely follow them whatever the price.

Hungary’s capital sparkles(闪耀)in winter and it’s a great place to see in the New Year. There’s festive cheer on tap, with concerts, folk dancing and stalls selling wine or fruit brandy and traditional chimney cake outsides. New Year’s Eve is celebrated with fireworks over the Danube(多瑙河), and it’s worth booking one of the many river cruises(巡游)with dinner and DJs (free and open 24/7, but likely to be crowded).

A four-night trip with Travel Republic costs 449 for a family (2 adults with 1 child under 6), departing Stansted on 28 December with Ryanair, with B&B accommodation at the central Atrium Budapest Hotel.

For a slightly more cerebral(理智的)New Year’s Eve, Stockholm is a smart choice. The main celebration is at Skansen, Sweden’s oldest open-air museum. Evening tickets are l4 for adults (children under 6 go free), or there are new day and evening combination tickets (l6 adult/5 child). On New Year’s Day, early birds can try an introduction to ice skating (8 a.m. daily, 139).

Book it Ryanair, Norwegian and SAS fly to Stockholm from several UK airports.

The land of fire and ice lives up to its name on New Year’s Eve, when about 90 bonfires(篝火)are lit across the country. Some bonfires are accompanied by Icelandic singing; most start about 8 p.m. and finish by 10 p.m., which can be a good time to see the northern lights. After the fires, everyone goes home to watch ramótaskaup, a TV show that has been running on 31 December since 1966. But that doesn’t mean the party is over just before midnight, they all come back out to let off an astonishing amount of fireworks, with profits going to Icelandic Search and Rescue Association, which does life-saving work, and is run by volunteers and is a cause close to most Icelanders’ hearts.

Book it Wow Air and Wizz Air, easyJet and Icelandair fly to Reykjavik from several UK cities.
