14.MCDONALD'S,one of the world's largest restaurant chains,recently made a big decision.On March 9,the company announced that its chicken suppliers in the US would stop using human antibiotics within two years.
Antibiotics are medicines that attack harmful bacteria(细菌) to help cure illnesses.Many cattle,pig and chicken producers give their livestock(家畜)antibiotics to help them stay healthy.Feeding antibiotics to animals is legal in the US.But the producers feed their livestock not only animal antibiotics,but also those used by humans.Experts say it can lead to public health problems.Overuse of these human antibiotics could cause germs(微生物)to become resistant(抗体)to drugs.When the drugs are used to treat humans,they may no longer be effective.
Many US fast food restaurants already say they serve chicken which are raised without antibiotics,but the decision by McDonald's is important because of its size.The company has over 30,000stores around the world,including 14,000in the US.
In recent years,customers have started to care more about food ingredients(原料).If they feel certain foods are made with ingredients that are of low quality or don't meet certain levels of quality,they'll choose other higher quality foods.
After seeing customer visits to US stores drop two years in a row,McDonald's says more changes to their food could be on the way.
However,McDonald's won't be applying the new antibiotics policy to its Chinese stores soon.
The company said it's not a double standard but they have to take Chinese food safety standards into consideration.
"The measures will be carried out gradually, based on the actual situation of Chinese agriculture,"McDonald's China said in a statement.

16.The idea of using radio or wireless to broadcast to audiences was formed in 1916 by a president of the American Marconi Company,David Sarnoff.His superiors were doubtful about his idea to"make radio a household cause,so that by purchase of a‘radio music box',the audience could enjoy lectures,music performance,etc."
Four years later the American engineer Frank Conrad,an employee at W E Corp,attracted considerable attention when a local newspaper reported on the growing audience listening on crystal radio sets to his evening and weekend amateur broadcasts.A local music store had provided records to play on the Victoria,and Conrad and his family served as disc jockeys(唱片音乐播音员).Westinghouse vice president Harry Davis asked Conrad to build a more powerful transmitter(发射台)in time to announce the outcome of the next US presidential election.Conrad completed his assignment,and on November 2,1920,station KDKA in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania,broadcast the announcement that Warren G.Harding had been elected president.About 1000 people heard this first news broadcast.
