根据前后文“I whether he mightbe thinking, as I was”推测句意:我想要知道他是否也和我想的一样。

根据前后文“I whetherhe might be thinking, as I was, how we were on each other at that moment.”

根据前后文“I was relying on himnot to fall ”此处考察了固定搭配fall asleep表示睡着,其他搭配不合语法。

根据前后文“I was relying on him not to fall, not to cross over into my lane (车道) and bring my to a sudden end.”

根据前后文“He relied on me in just the sameway without .” 故选A。

根据前后文“I believe that is the way the world .”

根据前后文推测句意“Sometimes that dependence requires us simply not to over the double yellow line.” cross over跨越。

根据前后文推测句意“Sometimesit requires us to act cooperatively, with friends or even . 故选A。

根据前后文“In 2003, doctors in five nationswere encouraged to the causes of SARS, saving thousands of lives”推测句意:2003年,来自五个国家的医生们被鼓励一起寻找艾滋病的病因,拯救了数千生命。

根据前后文“The threatof international terrorism(恐怖主义) has shown itself to be a similar ”推测句意:恐怖主义已经表明自己是一

根据前后文“The threat of international terrorism(恐怖主义) has shown itself to be a similar one requiring the across the world.” 故选A。

根据前后文“We must that our future is not controlled by ourselves alone.”

根据前后文“o, while alone down

根据前后文“So, while alone down a dark road, we must know the coming light may not be a danger, but a moment of trust.”

Many countries celebrated World Reading Day. Take the UK as an example, on that day, millions of schoolchildren can buy book of special price, a much lower price than usual, in any bookstore. There is an old saying about volunteer work that goes like this: No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.

Today, many people volunteer their time and energy to help others. There are a lot of ways to meet other people’s needs. For example, some volunteers provide help after a disaster. Others are happy to get dirty while repairing homes or planting trees or flowers in poor neighborhoods(地区). Young people see suffering and loneliness around them and find ways to help. And history lovers help archeologists(考古学家)search for ancient objects to help deepen knowledge of the past.

Volunteers also work in many areas around the world, including Haiti(海地). More than two years have passed since a 7.0 earthquake shook the nation. The exact number of people who died may never be known. Thousands of survivors of the Haitian earthquake still live in temporary(临时的)shelters. Last year, former American President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn joined five hundred Habitat volunteers in the town of Leogane to build houses.

Organizations do not have to be large to get volunteers. An activist group in Dharamsala, India is a good example. Jodie Underhill from England arrived in northern India several years ago. She planned to volunteer for an environmental project. She could almost not believe how much rubbish was ruining some of the area’s most beautiful sights. Ms Underhill learned about how to deal with the rubbish while taking part in other volunteer projects. But soon enough she formed her own group, Mountain Cleaners. Ms Underhill says the work is very hard. But she praises the group’s efforts as a wonderful experience. The young English woman says the Indian media started calling her “Garbage Girl”. And she says she was pleased with the name.

【1】 An ant went to the bank of a river to quench its thirst, and being carried away by the rush of the stream, was on the point of drowning. A dove sitting on a tree overhanging the water plucked a leaf and let it fall into the stream close to her. The ant climbed onto it and floated in safety to the bank. Shortly afterwards a bird catcher came and stood under the tree, aiming at the dove. The ant, perceiving his design, stung him in the foot. In pain the bird catcher shouted, and the noise made the dove take wing.

【2】Two men were travelling together, when a bear suddenly met them on their path. One of them climbed up quickly into a tree and hid himself in the branches. The other, seeing that he must be attacked, fell flat on the ground, and when the bear came up and felt him with his snout, and smelt him all over, he held his breath, and pretended to be dead as much as he could. The bear soon left him, for he will not touch a dead body. When he disappeared, the other traveler descended from the tree, and asked his friend what it was the bear had whispered in his ear. ―He gave me this advice, his companion replied. ―Never travel with a friend who deserts you at the approach of danger.

【3】 A prince had some monkeys trained to dance. Being naturally good at learning, they showed themselves excellent pupils, and in their rich clothes and masks, they danced as well as any of the courtiers. Their performance was often repeated with great applause, till on one occasion a courtier, bent on mischief, took from his pocket a handful of nuts and threw them upon the stage. The monkeys at the sight of the nuts forgot their dancing and became (as indeed they were) monkeys instead of actors. Pulling off their masks and tearing their robes, they fought with one another for the nuts. The dancing spectacle thus came to an end in the laughter and ridicule of the audience.

【4】 A cock was once strutting up and down the farmyard among the hens when suddenly he noticed something shining in the straw. "Ho! Ho!" said he, "that’s for me," and soon rooted it out from beneath the straw. It turned out to be a pearl that by some chance had been lost in the yard. ―You may be a treasure, signed the cock, ―to man, but for me I would rather have a single barley-corn.

【5】 An old man on the point of death summoned his sons around him to give them some parting advice. He ordered his servants to bring in a bunch of sticks, and said to his eldest son: "Break it." The son tried hard, but with all his efforts was unable to break the bundle. The other sons also tried, but none of them was successful. ―Untie it, said the father, ―and each of you take a stick. When they had done so, he called out to them: ―Now, break, and each stick was easily broken.
