Blind imitation (模仿) is self-destruction. To those who do not recognize their unique worth. Imitation
appears attractive: to those who know their strength. Imitation is unacceptable.
In the early stages of skill or character development, imitation is helpful. When I first learned to cook,
I used recipes (菜谱) and turned out some tasty dishes. But soon I grew bored. Why follow someone else's
way of cooking when I could create my own? Imitating role models is like using training wheels on a child's
bicycle; they help you get going, but once you find your own balance, you fly faster and farther without
relying on them.
In daily life, imitation can hurt us if we subconsciously (下意识地) hold poor role models. If, as a child,
you observed people whose lives were bad, you may have accepted their fear and pain as normal and gone
on to follow what they did. If you do not make strong choices for yourself, you will get the results of the
weak choices of others.
In the field of entertainment, our culture glorifies celebrities. Those stars look great on screen. But when
they step off screen, their personal lives may be disastrous. If you are going to follow someone, focus on
their talent, not their bad character or unacceptable behaviors.
Blessed is the person willing to act on their sudden desire to create something unique. Think of the movies,
books, teachers, and friends that have affected you most deeply. They touched you because their creations
were motivated by inspiration, not desperation. The world is changed not by those who do what has been
done before them, but by those who do what has been done inside them. Creative people have an endless
resource of ideas. The problem a creator faces is not running out of material; it is what to do with the material
knocking at the door of imagination.
Study your role models, accept the gifts they have given, and leave behind what does not server. Then
you can say, "I stand on the shoulders of my ancestors" tragedies and stories, and know that they are cheering
on.
1. Imitation proves useful when you _____.
A. know you are unique
B. lose the balance of life
C. begin to learn something new
D. get tired of routine practice
2. To avoid the bad result of imitation, we should _____.
A. forget daily fear and pain
B. choose the right example
C. ask others for decisions
D. stay away from stars
3. Acording to the author, the world moves on because of those who are _____.

A. desperate to insurance others with their knowledge
B. ready to turn their original ideas into reality
C. eager to discover what their ancestors did
D. willing to accept others' ideas

4. The trouble a creator faces is _____.
A. the lack of strong motivation
B. the absence of practical ideas
C. how to search for more materials
D. how to use imagination creatively
5. What is the author's purpose in writing this passage?
A. To highlight the importance of creatively.
B. To criticize the characters of role models.
C. To compare imitation with creation.
D. To explain the meaning of success.

It has been proved that a child’s social(交际的) development has a deep effect on his progress in
his lessons. Children who have trouble getting along with their classmates can end up behind others
and have a great chance of stopping school. In the early grades especially children should be encouraged
to work in groups rather than alone so that teachers can spot those who have problems making friends
and then do with it. “When children work on a task”, says Education Professor Lillian Katz from
University of Illinois, “they learn to work together, to disagree, to cooperate(合作), to take turns.
These skills can’t be learned in class. We all know people who have wonderful technical skills but
don’t have any social skills.”
At certain age, children are also learning to judge themselves in relation(关系) to others. For most
children, school is an entirely new place, outside world. Just as the 1-year-old children learn to walk,
the 6-year-old children are working hard to meet their parents’ wishes. “Young children don’t know
how to tell the difference between hard work and ability,” says a researcher of early childhood
education. “If they try hard to do something and fail, they may decide that they will never be able to
finish a kind of task. The effects of comparison(比较) such as putting their marks on the wall can
be serious”, says Hills. “If a child’s confidence(信心)is broken, he needs special help.”
1. The writer seems to think if a child gets on poorly with his classmates, it will _______.

A. teach

C. treat
D. find
3. For most children, school makes them understand _______.
A. that social needs and their own needs are different
B. how they can meet social needs and parents’ needs
C. that one’s hard work and ability can be two quite different things
D. that it is society not they themselves that decides their future
4. Which of the following does a student need most according to the passage?
A. Independence and cooperation.
B. Success in lessons and independent thought.

Today almost everyone knows computers and the Internet. If I ask you "What is the most important in
your life?", maybe you will say "Computers and the Internet."
The first computer was made in 1946. It was very big but it worked slowly. Today computers are getting
smaller and smaller. But they work faster and faster. What can computers do? A writer has said, "People can't
live without computers today."
The Internet came a little later than computers. It is about twenty-five years later than computers. But now
it can be found almost everywhere. We can use it to read books, write letters, do shopping, play games or
make friends.
Many students like the Internet very much. They often go into the Internet as soon as they are free. They
make friends on the Internet and maybe they have never seen these friends. They don't know their real names,
ages, and even sex (性别). They are so interested in making the "unreal friends" that they can't put their heart
into study. Many of them can't catch up with others on many subjects because of that.
We can use computers and the Internet to learn more about the world. But at the same time, we should
remember that not all the things can be done by computers and the Internet.
1. The Internet cannot be used for _____.
[     ]
A. studying
B. shopping
C. thinking
D. playing
2. When the computer was invented, it was _____.
[     ]
A. large and worked quickly
B. small and worked slowly
C. large but worked slowly
D. small but worked quickly
3. The Internet was born in about _____.
[     ]
A. 1960
B. 1970
C. 1980
D. 1985
4. Which of the following is true?
[     ]
A. Few students like going into the Internet.
B. Students use the Internet to make "unreal friends".
C. These "unreal friends" often meet each other.
D. Students know the friends on the Internet very well.
5. What does the writer think of the Internet?
[     ]
A. It is wonderful.
B. It can make students study harder.
C. It is not good for students.
D. It is helpful, but we can't do everything on it.

"Congratulations, Mr. Jones, it's a girl."
Fatherhood is going to have a different meaning and brings forth a different answer from every man who
bears these words. Some feel proud when they receive the news, while others worry, wondering whether
they will be good fathers. Although there are some men who like children and may have had considerable
experience with them, others do not particularly care for children and spend little time with them. Many fathers
and mothers have been planning and looking forward to children for some time. For other couples, pregnancy
was an accident that both husband and wife have accepted willingly or unwillingly.
Whatever the reaction to the birth of a child, it is obvious that the shift from the role of husband to that of
father is a difficult task. Yet, unfortunately, few attempts have been made to educate fathers in this
remobilization process. Although numerous books have been written about American mothers, only recently
has literature focused on the role of a father.
It is argued by some writers that the transition to the father's role, although difficult, is not nearly as great
as the transition the wife must make to the mother's role. The mother's role seems to require complete
transformation in daily routine and highly innovative adaptation; on the other hand, the father's role is less
demanding and immediate. However, even though we mentioned the fact that growing number of women are
working outside the home, the father is still thought by many as the breadwinner in the household.
1. According to the author, being a father _____.
A. brings a feeling of excitement to males
B. has a different meaning for those who have daughters
C. makes some men feel proud and others uneasy
D. means nothing but more responsibilities
2. The transition to the mother's role requires that the wife _____.
A. change her lifestyle in a highly innovative way
B. make a complete change in her everyday life to deal with the new situation
C. stay at home to take care of the baby
D. help her husband in his remobilization process
3. Some writers argue that with respect to the change of roles, fathers, compared with mothers, _____.
A. have to shoulder more burdens
B. have to make more difficult adaptations
C. have an easier job to do
D. can usually do a better job

America is a society in which children have watched about 18,000 television commercials (商业广告)
by the time that they have reached their middle teens. My friend Jolie learned this fact a few weeks ago and
decided to do something about it. She thinks that the number of commercials that children see can influence
the way in which they view the world. That is, Jolie believes that children who watch so many advertisements
will grow up to believe that the most important thing in life is to buy, buy, buy! This, says Jolie, is wrong. A
little child cannot understand advertisements for what they are and so believes totally in what he or she hears.
I have been thinking about what Jolie has told me. I suppose that she is right. I know that it is easy to
control the minds of children because they don't see things logically as adults do. And I am upset myself at
how the advertisers can control a child's outlook on the world. I think I should join Jolie in her efforts to
change advertising methods when it comes to advertisements for children. I really have a responsibility (责任)
to make sure that future generation are given every chance to develop their minds without being influenced by
anything bad.
Of course, there is another side to the problem. After all, parents ought to take responsibility for what their
children watch and how much television they see. I know that many parents just want their children to be quiet,
and so they let them watch as much television as they want. But,in the long run,the methods of advertisers have
great power because we are society of consumers (消费者). I only hope that someday there can be an answer
of this problem. Children need our guidance, not the guidance of advertisers.
1. Compared with adults, children can _____.
[     ]
A. not tell good advertisements from bad ones
B. be more interested in TV advertisements
C. sit for longer hours watching advertisements
D. not judge things reasonably
2. The author thinks that _____.
     [     ]
A. children should not be affected by TV advertisements
B. watching television is unhealthy to children
C. most TV advenisements tend to tell lies
D. little children have difficulty in understanding advertisements
3. In order to prevent children from watching too much television, the author suggests that _____.
[     ]
A. parents keep their children away from the television sets
B. advertisements be changed to suit the needs of children
C. more programs be started to give guidance to children
D. ways be found to have the least influence of commercials on children
4. American children will have watched 18,000 _____.
[     ]
A. hours of commercials when they are about 15 years old
B. television commercials when they are about 15 years old
C. hours of commercials when they have reached middle age
D. television commercials when they have reached middle age
5. The main idea of the passage is that _____.
[     ]
A. children should watch any television commercials
B. television advertising has a bad influence on children
C. the number of commercials that children see can influence the way in which they view the world
D. parents ought to take responsibility for what and how much their children watch on TV

Nearly 600,000 Americans lost their jobs this past month, pushing the nation's unemployment
rate to 7.6 percent. But not all of those fired workers are sitting at home, reading the want ads
and waiting for the phone to ring.  Thousands are returning to school, making public colleges
and universities among the few bright places in a disappointing U.S. economy.
For example, when many Americans have had their work hours decreased, or even lost their
jobs, Sherian Huddleston in charge of the enrollment (注册) of new students at Middle Tennessee
State University(MTSU) is working overtime. The university's population grew by 800 students this
term--an increase of 4 percent over last spring's registration. Huddleston says seeing enrollments
rise in a failing economy is not unexpected. "When people are out of jobs," she points out," they
will look at 'What else can I do?" What other career can I follow?' and they will often go to school
or return to school if they have not previously completed their degree."
Older returning students aren't the only ones increasing enrollment at Middle Tennessee State.
Huddleston says she's also seeing an increase in student transfers. "Students who previously went
out of state to more expensive schools, or even in state to more expensive, maybe private schools,
because of the economy those students may be transferring to public schools, the state schools, to
make the most of the lower cost of attending," she explains.
1. According to the passage, many students return to school ______.
A. to find a new job
B. to read the want ads
C. to complete their degree
D. to turn to their schoolmates for help
2. Which of the following is TRUE of Sherian Huddleston?
A. She is not surprised when seeing enrollments go up.
B. She doesn't think it a good idea to transfer to public schools.
C. She is puzzled by those students who return to school.
D. She thinks returning to school is a good way to save the falling economy.
3. Many students are transferring to public or state schools mainly because
A. public or state schools provide better education
B. public or state schools offer better jobs
C. they don't want to get affected by the falling economy
D. they want to bring down the expense
4. Which can serve as the best title of the passage?
A. Falling American Economy
B. College Enrollment Up in a Depressing Economy
C. College Admit More Students Than Before
D. More Students Prefer to Return School
