When a friend is sad about a tragedy(悲剧),it’s hard to know how to comfort(安慰) him/ her. But the worst thing you can do is say nothing. It could mean that you don’t care. You don’t have to say much.. A single supportive phrase doesn’t require absolutely perfect words to break the ice. Here are some conversation starters when life difficult situations have your tongue tied.
1. A friend loses his baby.
Don’t say: “Don’t worry. You’re so young. You’ll have another baby.” Do say: “ I’m so sorry. I can’t begin to imagine what you are going through, but if you want to talk about it, call me anytime.”
2. A guy deserts(抛弃)your friend.
Don’t say: “I never liked that rat bastard (坏蛋) anyway!” ( If the couple winds up reconciling (和解), you could end up losing your friend.) Do say: “Breaking up is always hard to deal with, but I’m here for you, whatever you need.”
3. A friend has a death in the family.
Don’t say: “It’s God’s will.” or “I know exactly how you feel.” Do say: “I’m sorry about your loss. What can I do to help?”
4. A friend loses a job suddenly.
Don’t say: “Work is always boring. Those bosses didn’t suit you!” Do say: “I’m sorry for that, but I know there’s an even better job waiting for you there. Let’s think about possibilities.”
5. Someone’s pet dies.
Don’t say: “Gee! It was only a cat!” or “My roommate doesn’t like her dog and she is getting rid of her dog. Do you want it?” Do say: “I’m sorry, she was such a great cat. How long did you have it?”

EVERYONE NEEDS FRIENDS
Everyone needs friends. We all like to feel close to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh and do things with.Surely, there are times when we need to be alone. We don’t always want people around. But we would feel lonely if we never had a friend.
No two people are just the same.Sometimes friends don’t get along well. That doesn’t mean that they no longer like each other. Most of the time they will make up and go on being friends.
Sometimes friends move away. Then we feel very sad.We miss them very much. But we call them and write to them.It could be that we would neven see them again. And we can make new friends. It is surprising to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them.
Families sometimes name their children after a close friend. Many people are named after men or women who have been friendly to people in a town. Some libraries are named this way.So are some schools. We think of these people when we go to these places.
There is more good news for people who have friends. They live longer than people who don’t.Why?It could be that they are happier.Being happy helps you stay well.Or it could be just knowing that someone cares. If someone cares about you,you take better care of yourself.

A few weeks after my first wife, Georgia, was called to heaven, I was cooking dinner for my son and myself. For a   16 , I had decided on frozen peas. As I was cutting open the bag, it   17  from my hand and crashed to the floor. The peas, like marbles,   18  everywhere. I tried to use a broom,   19  with each swipe they just rolled across the kitchen.
For the next week, every time I was in the   20 , I found a pea---in a corner, or behind a table leg. They kept   21 . Eight months later I pulled out the refrigerator to clean behind it, and   22  12 frozen peas hidden underneath.
At the time I found those few remaining   23 , I was in a new relationship with a wonderful   24  I’d met in a support group. After we married, I was reminded 25  those peas under the refrigerator, and realized that my   26  had been like that bag of frozen peas. It had shattered(破碎. My wife had died; I was in a new city with a busy job, and with a son having trouble   27  his new surroundings and the  28  of his mother. I was a bag of spilled frozen peas; my life had come apart and scattered.
When life gets you   29 , when everything you know comes apart, and when you think you’ll never  30 , remember that it’s just a bag of scattered frozen peas. The peas can be  31 , and life will move on. You’ll find all the peas   32 , including the ones that are hardest to find. And when you’ve got them   33  you’ll start to feel whole again.
The life you know can break apart at any time. But you’ll have to   34 , and how fast you collect your peas depends on you. Will you keep scattering them around with a broom,  35  will you pick them up one by one and put your life back together?

I was doing some last-minute Christmas shopping in a toy store. A nicely dressed little girl was  36  the teddy bears beside her father  37 she saw a little boy walk in and stop in front of the Pokémon toys. His jacket was obviously too small. Rather  41 , the boy gave up the video games and chose a book of stickers  42 . After they walked away, the little girl ran over to the Pokémon video games. She excitedly picked up one  43  on top of the others, and ran toward the check-out. I picked up my purchases(购买物) and  44 the girl and her father.
Then, much to the little girl’s  45 , the little boy and his father got in line  46 her and me. There was a gardener who looked after his garden with great care.To water his flowers,he used two buckets. One was a shiny and new bucket. The other was a very old and dilapidated one, which had seen many years of service, but was now past its best.
Every morning, the gardener would fill up the two buckets. Then he would carry them along the path, one on each side,to the flowerbeds. The new bucket was very proud of itself. It could carry a full bucket of water without a single drop spilled(溢出).The old bucket felt very ashamed because of its holes:before it reached the flowerbeds, much water had leaked along the path.
Sometimes the new bucket would say,“See how capable I am ! How good it is that the gardener has me to water the flowers every day ! I don’t know why he still bothers with you. What a waste of space you are !”
And all that the old bucket could say was,“I know I’m not very useful, but I can only do my best.I'm happy that the gardener still finds a little bit of use in me,at least. ”
One day,the gardener heard that kind of conversation. After watering the flowers as usual,he said,“You both have done your work very well. Now I am going to carry you back.I want you to look carefully along the path.”
Then the two buckets did so.All along the path, they noticed,on the side where the new bucket was carried, there was just bare(光秃秃的)earth;on the other side where the old bucket was carried, there was a joyous row of wild flowers, leading all the way to the garden.
