【题目】阅读下列短文从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

B

John was waiting for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn’t, the girl with the rose. Thirteen months ago, in a Florida library he took a book off the shell and found himself interested in the notes in the margin (页边).The soft handwriting showed a thoughtful soul and insightful (有洞察力的) mind.

In front of the book, he discovered the name, Miss Hollis Maynell. With time and effort he got her address. He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to keep in touch.

During the next year and one month the two grew to know each other through the mail. A romance started. John requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn’t matter what she looked like. Later they agreed on their first meeting—7:00 pm at Grand Central Station in New York.

“You’ll recognize me,” she wrote,” by the red rose I’ll be wearing my coat.” So at 7:00 he was in the station looking for the girl with the red rose.

A girl in a green suit was coming toward him, her figure long and slim and her eyes were blue as flowers. Almost uncontrollably came to her, and just at this moment he saw Hollis Maynell—a woman well past 40.The girl was walking quickly away.

He did not hesitate (犹豫), saying,” I’m John, and you must be Miss Maynell. I am so glad you could meet me. May I take you to dinner?”

The woman smiled, “I don’t know what this is about, son,” she answered,” but the young lady in the green suit begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner, I should tell you that she is waiting for you in the restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!”

It’s not difficult to admire Miss Maynell’s wisdom. The true nature of a heart is seen in its response to the unattractive.

【题目】My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of a lot of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed.

Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电)noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉)shaking my set.

When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.

1Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set?

A. He got an older model than he had expected.

B. He couldn’t return it when it was broken.

C. He could have bought it at a lower price.

D. He failed to find any movie shows on it.

2Which of the following can best replace the phrase” signed off” in Paragraph 1?

A. ended all their programs B. provided fewer channels

C. changed to commercials D. showed all-night movies

3How did the author finally get his TV set working again?

A. By shaking and hitting it. B. By turning it on and off.

C. By switching channels. D. By having it repaired.

4How does the author sound when telling the story?

A. Curious. B. Anxious. C. Cautious. D. Humorous.

【题目】How to keep a nearly lost friendship alive

There are times when a friendship has to go through huge tests. It is a battle between staying together and moving away from each other. 1More often than not, it is pride that destroys a friendship.

Relax your pride. This is easy to say, but very difficult to do. You may ask yourself, “Why should I say sorry when he does not show any regret for what he has done?”

2If you find yourself saying any of these things, you should understand that it is your pride talking. Allowing your pride to control your feelings will leave you bitter and confused.

Talk about the problem. Face the problem calmly. 3 it may sound silly, but it could certainly heal the wounds that you have caused each other. If you avoid facing the problem, your pain will only grow. Remember, you want to keep the friendship and not worsen the problem.

Laugh about it. 4 After some time, when both of you have become calm and renewed your confidence in each other, go back to the time when you had nearly fallen apart. Laugh about your foolishness, and promise to never let pride take over your friendship.

Friendship is a valuable thing. 5Rapport(融洽的关系)is what creates a friendship. Love, understanding, acceptance and forgiveness are what lead to a long-lasting friendship.

A. Try to save your friendship.

B. It cannot be bought or demanded.

C. It is often said that laughter is the best medicine.

D. Do not wait for the other person to make the first move.

E. There are many complex reasons why a friendship falls out.

F. Write a letter and read it out loud to the other person.

G. You may also say, “I have not done anything wrong, and I don’t want to say sorry.”
