If parents bring up child with the aim of turning the child into a genius(天才),they will cause great damage to him. According to several leading educational psychologists(心理学家),this is one of the biggest mistakes which some parents make. Generally, the child will understand very well what the parent expects, and will fail. Unrealistic(不现实的) parental expectations can cause great damage to children.

However, if parents are not unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but are hopeful in a sensible(有理智的) way, the child may succeed in doing very well-especially if the parents are very supportive of their child.

They even drive him 50 kilometers twice a week for violin lessons. Although Michael’s mother knows very little about music. Michael’s father plays the trumpet(小号) in a large orchestra(管弦乐队). However, he never makes Michael enter music competitions if he is unwilling.

Michael’s friend, Winston Chen, however, is not so lucky. Although both his parents are successful musicians, they set too high a standard for Winston. They want their son to be as successful as they are and so they enter him in every piano competition held. They are very unhappy when he does not win. When I was your age, I used to win every competition I entered. Winston’s father tells him. Winston is always afraid that he will disappoint his parents and now he always seems quiet and unhappy.

What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person a genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live? These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear.

We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise. Mental (done with the mind) exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists (心理学家) think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.

Parents should also be careful with what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive (helpful) things to their children, such as “That was a very clever thing you did.” or “You are such a smart child.”

The words “intelligent” and “brilliant” in the first paragraph probably mean _______ while “dull” in the second paragraph means ________.

A. bright and splendid; slow in thinking and understanding

D. a famous person; an ordinary person

It is better for parents ________.

D. to give their children as much help as possible

It's the end of class. When the bell rings, students of Luohu Foreign Languages School in Shenzhen quickly take out their cell phones. They want to log on to their micro blogs(微博) to check the interesting things that have happened in the last hour.

Since last year, thetrend of micro blogging has swept the country. Recent surveys shows that most students in middle schools have a micro blog and some even update their blogs over five times per day.

"We learn many fresh and interesting things on micro blogs and they have become popular topics in class," said Andy Liang, 14. "If you do not know about them, you are out."

It is also a great place for students to let out stress. "My parents always ask me to study hard, and encourage me before exams, but it really adds pressure," said Simon Zhang, 15. "When I share these feelings on my micro blog, I get many replies from friends in the same situation, which makes me feel better."

But parents are worried that micro blogging could be a waste of time. Some misleading messages may even cause danger to kids, they said.

Mr. Shen, a professor at the China Education Association, suggests parents not worry too much as long as kids are not crazy about micro blogging. We would probably all be amazed if we watched a videotape of ourselves performing basically unconscious acts as we go about the business of the day. These unconscious acts consist of all the little personal habits that we don’t even think about, but definitely should. These are some of the things that present an image of who we are to others, and if we are careless in performing them, this image may well be other than we would like it to be.

Parents who insist that their children practice good manners and habits at home are doing them a great service, for these habits then become lifelong and the natural way they do things. It proves true that their unconscious actions will reflect a well-mannered person.

People who, for example, eat with both arms on the table at home will likely do so when out. Those who are lazy and slow in private will certainly be so in public. Children who are permitted to be disrespectful to their parents will follow suit with other adults, and will, most likely, become adults who are disrespectful of others. This is an area where the saying “practice makes perfect” may be applied.

There is an article about the actress, Audrey Hepburn, known for her beautiful carriage and posture. According to her biographer, her grandmother tied her neck to the back of her chair, at table, so that she would not drop down suddenly over her food, but rather would learn to put only small amounts of food on her spoon or fork and bring them to her mouth. This is a rather extreme “at home” method for the development of erect (直立的) posture, but it does illustrate the effectiveness of practicing good habits so that, when in public, they are instinctive.

1.

Which of the following expresses the main idea of the passage?

A. Parents should be responsible for their children’s good habits.

B. The actress is well known for her beautiful posture.

C. We should always be aware of our manners.

D. Without good manners, one can never be perfect.

2.

Those who eat with both arms on the table at home ______.

A. will probably have the same habit when they have meals in the restaurant

B. will probably change the habit when eating out with their relatives

C. will feel embarrassed when having meals with so many strangers in public[来源:Z&xx&k.Com]

D. will always put their arms on the table no matter where they eat

3.

The meaning of “practice makes perfect” in the third paragraph is ______.

A. the more practice one has, the better job he will do

B. the more perfect one is, the more practice he needs

C. if one has enough practice, he will become perfect

D. perfect makes a person practice more

4.

Which of the following are NOT true?

A. If we are not careful about our unconscious acts, the images of ourselves presented to others will be quite undesirable.

B. The good habits formed in one’s childhood will benefit him throughout his life.

C. If parents do not care about the disrespectful attitude adopted by their children towards themselves, their children might be disrespectful of others.

D. It is unlikely that a well-mannered person will not embarrass himself in public.
