Art is a product of human activity, made with the intention of stimulating(刺激) human senses as well as human mind or spirit. Thus art is an action, an object, or a collection of ac?tions and objects created with the intention of expressing emotions or ideas. Beyond this descrip?tion, there is no general agreed-upon definition of art, since defining the boundaries of art is subjective, but the drive for art is often called human creativity.

An artwork is normally recognized in quality by the amount of stimulation it brings about, the influence it has on people, the number of people that can relate to it,and so on. All come to the "degree of art". Most artworks that are widely considered to be "masterpieces" possess these features.

Something is not generally considered art when it has a different primary purpose. Howev?er,some contemporary art challenges this idea.

As such, something can be considered art in general,or as an element of some object. For example,a painting may be a pure art, while a chair, though designed to be sat in,may include artistic elements. Art that has less functional value or intention may be referred to as fine art, while objects of artistic merit(价值) that serve a functional purpose may be referred to as craft-work(工艺 品) .

In his article " Modernist Painting",Clement Greenberg defined modern art as " the use of characteristic methods of a discipline(学科) to criticize the discipline itself".

Though only originally intended as a way of understanding a specific set of artworks, this definition of modern art underlies most of the ideas of art within the various art movements of the twentieth century and early twenty-first century.

Scientists in the United States say plant life has increased on Earth in the past twenty years and that in every area of plant growth the increase is the result of weather conditions.

Eight scientists from across the United States did the study. The space agency NASA and the Department of Energy paid for it. The findings were published in the magazine Science.

The researchers spent one and a half years examining weather satellite information. The in?formation was recorded from 1982 to 1999. That period was one of the warmest on record. Re?searchers found that rainfall generally increased during that time.

The satellites measured the number of leaves on plants and the amount of sunlight taken in. The scientists used that information to estimate what is called net primary production. This is to?tal amount of carbon stored in land plants.

The scientists report a 6% increase in stored carbon since 1982. They say gains were high in equatorial areas, especially around the Amazon River in South America. The area alone had a 1% increase in the net primary production.

Ramakrishna Nemani of the University of Montana in Missoula headed the study. He says reduced cloud cover led to growth in Amazon area. He also says the lack of clouds allowed more sunlight to get through. More sunlight meant increases in photosynthesis(光合作用) .That is the process by which plants use energy from sunlight to produce the chemicals they need to grow.

Northern Canada, the north-central United States and northern Europe were second in increased plant growth. Ramakrishna Nemani says a rise in temperature helped plants there.

All together, the report says 25% of areas of plant life on Earth experienced increases. But the scientists also note increase in the number of people on Earth and carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. Ranga Myneni of Boston University in Massachusetts, another study scientist says humans use about half the net primary production on Earth. And he notes that the world popula?tion grew by 36% during the period of time studied.

(   ) 5. Which of the following is in charge of the study?

     A. The space agency NASA of the US.

    B. The Department of Energy of the US.

    C. Ramakrishna Nemani in Missoula.

    D. Ranga Myneni in Massachusetts.

(   ) 6. What's the main cause of the plant growth put forward by the study?

     A. Growth in population.    B. Regional features.

    C. Seasonal variation.    D. Weather conditions

(   ) 7. Why do scientists believe that reduced cloud cover has led to the plant growth in the Amazon area?

     A. Because plants could take in more sunlight.

    B. Because plants could get more rainfall.

    C. Because plants could enjoy cooler air.

    D. Because plants suffer less from natural disasters.

(   ) 8. Which of the following descriptions agreed with what the years from 1982 to 1999 suggested?

     A. It was the warmest on record.

    B. Rainfall decreased little by little.

    C. World population grew by 25%.

    D. Stored carbon increased by 6%.

LONDON (Reuters) ―The design for an official commemorative (纪念性的) coin to mark the engagement of Britain's Prince William and Kate Middleton was unveiled on Thursday, but not everyone might recognize the bride-to-be.

The depiction, based on photographs of the couple at a sporting event, bears some resem?blance to William but less to his fiancee(未婚妻) .

Royal watchers said she appears much fuller in the face on the coin than she is in real life.

"This coin is of historical importance―to get it so wrong seems ridiculous," Editor-in-Chief of     Majesty magazine, Ingrid Seward, was quoted on the Sky News website as saying.

The design was approved by the 28-year-old couple and by William's grandmother Queen Elizabeth.

The Royal Mint, which produced the collectors' item, said it had no intention of changing the design.

"It is quite a subjective issue, ”a spokesman for the Mint, based in Llantrisant, south Wales, told Reuters.

"It is always challenging to engrave(雕刻) profiles and features onto something as small as a coin, particularly the features of young people.”

Prince William, second-in-line to the throne after his father Prince Charles, announced his engagement to his long-term girlfriend in November, and the couple will marry on April 29.

Production of the coin has yet to begin, and it is not clear how many will be struck, but or?ders have been taken.

The Royal Mint has created many commemorative medals and coins to mark special occa?sions ,including the 2012 London Olympics as well as other royal events, but this is the first time it has created a commemorative royal engagement coin.

(   ) 5. What's wrong with the coin?

A.One of the figures doesn't look like the real person.

B.Nobody can recognize the woman on the coin.

C.The royal family are not satisfied with the design.

D.It was rejected on the collection market.

(   ) 6. How did the Royal Mint react to the problem?

A.They apologized and promised to correct it.

B.They explained but insisted on making it as it is.

C.They denied all criticism about the coin.

D.They admitted it was their fault but refused to redesign it.

(   ) 7. What is the purpose of making the coin?

A.To provide a new item for the collectors.

B.To announce the marriage of Prince William.

C.To commemorate the Olympic Games in the UK.

D.To mark an important event of the royal family.
