题目内容

The Union Army will be remembered as winning the Civil War. Yet Darwin’s Theory of Evolution may change as Newton’s Three Laws of Motion. Unlike history or basic mathematics, the world of science changes infinitely.

Science is unique because every day something new is discovered, often changing or challenging older theories. Science, from quarks and leptons to the galaxy clusters(星系)of our universe, holds immeasurable secrets that are exposed every day. With each new discovery the human race decodes a few more words of the ancient scroll that is the universe. Day by day, we decipher(译解)the code of the universe. Unlike history and literature which can be explored only so far, science is endless. Its beauty is that it represents the past, the present, and the future; there may always be something new to discover.

No matter how well humans understand the universe, science will still have a long future. This fact has been proved clearly to me by the diverse modifications(修正)I have witnessed in science in just my 17 years. In less than two decades, I have witnessed an enormous advance in technology as well as general knowledge of science. Surgeries that were thought complex at my birth are now routine, and computers once classified as advanced are out of date. Pluto, which during my childhood was considered a planet of our solar system, has been reclassified.

If such dramatic developments can occur in such a short time, who knows what the world will be like by the next century? This makes science distinctive; the realization that a more efficient technique to solve the world’s most thorny troubles may be just around the bend. Perhaps an efficient way will soon be discovered to kill certain cancer cells or get rid of HIV. Science is enthralling(迷人的)because the answers to these troubles that upset the world today exist and could be discovered at any moment.

A.it can cure kinds of cancers and AIDS now

B.it makes complex computer easy to use

C.it develops endlessly and will find solutions sooner or later

52.What can we infer from the second paragraph?

A.Some theories or opinions that seem true in some time may be incomplete.

B.Humans today have already understood the universe quite well.

C.The author is an experienced scientist in the field of universe.

D.Surgeries and computers stand for the advanced development of science.

53.The author quoted Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and Newton’s Three Laws of Motion because             .

A.their theories have been out of date already

B.their theories prove wrong today

C.some basic theories maintain unchangeable

D.science would change infinitely, some famous theories included

54.What will the future world be like in the author’s opinion?

A.No thorny troubles will exist any longer.

B.Fast developing science makes the future world beyond imagination.

C.Diseases such as cancers and HIV will disappear.

D.Science will develop as fast in next century as present.

55.The author writes the article mainly to           .

A.describe the fascination of the developing science

B.state how complex science is developing

C.distinguish the new theories from the old ones

D.imagine the convenient future life provided by science

Accidents happen, but when they destroy the delicate balance of nature and cause the whole world to suffer, they become disasters, and we  should do all we can to prevent them from happening again.

Bhopal chemical leak, December 1984, Bhopal, India

An explosion in the Union Carbide chemical plant in Bhopal, India, released a deadly gas called methyl (甲基) isocyanate(异氰盐酸), which is used to make pesticides. The gas formed a cloud that killed 2500 people; another 50000- 100000 people became ill. Trees and plants in the area became yellow and brittle. The explosion was caused by a mechanical failure that was not noticed in time to stop it.

Exxon Valdez oil spill, March 1989, Alaska, U.S.

On March 24, 1989, 11 million gallons of crude oil spilled into Prince William Sound from the tanker Exxon Valdez when its hull hit a reef and tore open. The oil, which is not yet cleaned up after billions of dollars have been spent and the millions of birds, fish, and other wildlife have died, was caused by human error and could have been avoided.

   Chernobyl, April 1986, USSR

At 1:23 A.M. on Saturday, April 26, 1986, the reactor blew at nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, ripping open the core, blowing the roof off the building, starting more than 30 fires, and allowing radioactive material to leak into the air. Some 31 people were killed and 200 people were treated for radiation poisoning. Still at risk are 135000 people from the 179 villages within 20 miles, of the plant who were exposed to the radiation before being evacuated. Glaring violations of safety rules were at the bottom of this tragic event.

Love Canal, 1953, New York, U.S.

Love Canal, a small town in upstate New York near Niagara Falls, was destroyed by waste from chemical plants. Beginning in 1947, chemical companies could legally dump their waste products into the canal. The area developed a foul smell, trees lost their bark, and leaves fell throughout the year. A health survey found that the drinking water contained excessive levels of 82 industrial chemicals, 7 of which were thought to cause cancer. The people of Love Canal had an unusually high rate of cancer and birth defects. Eventually, many of the houses had to be abandoned. Today, the town has been partly cleaned up and some families have moved back to the area.

Three Mile Island, 1979, Pennsylvania, U.S.

On March 28, 1979, the worst accident in U.S. nuclear reactor history occurred at the Three Mile Island power station, near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. No one was killed, and very little radioactivity was released into the air when coolant (the fluid that keeps a machine cool) escaped from the reactor core due to a combination of mechanical failure and human error. After 10 years and $ 1 billion in cleanup costs, the lower extremes of the reactor are still so radioactive that workers must use remote - control equipment to remove the remaining fragment of fuel core.

I have had just about enough of being treated like a second-class citizen, simply because I happen to be that unfairly treated member of society --- a customer. The more I go into shops and hotels, banks and post offices, railway stations, airports and the like, the more I am convinced the things are being run solely to suit the firm, the system, or the union. There seems to be a deceptive (欺骗的) new motto for so-called “service” organizations --- Staff Before Service.

How often, for example, have you queued for what seems like hours at the Post Office or the supermarket because there were not enough staff on duty to man all the service grilles or checkout counters? Surely in these days of high unemployment it must be possible to hire cashiers and counter staff. Yet supermarkets, hinting darkly at higher prices, claim that uncovering all their cash registers at any one time would increase operating costs. And the Post Office says we cannot expect all their service grilles to be occupied “at times when demand is low”.

It is the same with hotels. Because waiters and kitchen staff must finish when it suits them, dining rooms close earlier or menu choice is cut short. As for us guests, we just have to put up with it. There is also the nonsense of so many friendly hotel night porters having been thrown out of their jobs in the interests of “efficiency” and replaced by coin-eating machines which offer everything from lager to laxatives (从贮藏啤酒到通便剂). Not to mention the tea-making kit in your room: a kettle with a mixed collection of tea bags, plastic milk boxes and lump sugar. Who wants to wake up to a raw teabag? I do not, especially when I am paying for “service”.

Can it be stopped, this worsening of service, this growing attitude that the customer is always a bore? I angrily hope so because it is happening, sadly, in all walks of life.

Our only hope is to hammer home our anger whenever and wherever we can and, if all else fails, bring back into practice that other, older slogan --- Take Our Deal Elsewhere.
