I give my whole water in joy,” sings the waterfall. “though little of it is enough for the thirsty.” (verse 69)·The woodcutter’s axe(斧头) begged for its handle from the tree. The tree gave it.

127 Bees sip honey from flowers and hum their thanks when they leave.

The gaudy butterfly is sure that the flowers owe thanks to him.

根据诗100 The cloud stood humbly(谦逊的) in a corner of the sky.The Morning crowned it with splendour(光辉).

231 Set bird’s wings with gold and it will never again soar in the sky.

When did you last see a polar bear? On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These “Polar Bears” are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day, the air temperature was 3, and the water temperature was a bit higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements. First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group. This is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.

Doctors do not agree about the medical effects of cold-water swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body’s temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops. Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter.

The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits (or advantages) of cold-water swimming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system(循环系统)because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming.

The main benefits (or advantages) of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim year-round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says, “When I go into the water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away.”

【3The Polar Bears like to swim all the year round, for _______.

A. they can remain young

Many years ago there was a huge oil refinery fire in a small town. Flames shot hundreds of feet into the air. The sky was thick with grimy black smoke. The heat was intense—so intense that firefighters had to park their trucks a block away and waited for the heat to die down before they could begin to fight the fire. However, it was about to rage out of control.

Then, all of a sudden, from several blocks away came a fire truck racing down the street. With its brakes screeching, it hit the curb in front of the fire. The firefighters jumped out and began to battle the blaze. All the firefighters who were parked a block away saw this, and they jumped into their trucks, drove down the block and began to fight the fire, too. As a result of that cooperative effort, they were just barely able to bring the fire under control.

The people who saw this teamwork thought, “My goodness, the man who drove that lead fire truck—what an act of bravery!” They decided to give him a special award to recognize him for his bravery in leading the charge.

At the ceremony the mayor said, “Captain, we want to honor you for a fantastic act of bravery in leading the charge. You prevented the loss of property, perhaps even the loss of life. If there is one special thing you could have—just about anything—what would it be?”

Without hesitation, the captain replied, “Your Honor, a new set of brakes of my truck would be great!”

D. The people decided to honor the captain because he fought the fire bravely.

【3】Why did all the firefighters park their trucks a block away from the fire?

A. Because they were waiting for the captain to arrive.

B. Because the smoke was too thick to see anything.

C. Because the fire was about to go out of control.

D. Because they had to wait for the intense heat to die down a bit.

Bob Butler lost his legs in a 1965 landmine explosion in Vietnam. He returned home as a war hero. Twenty years later,he proved once again that heroism comes from the heart.
Butler was working in his garage in a small town in Arizona on a hot summer day when he heard a woman’s screams coming from a nearby house. He rolled his wheelchair toward the house, but the dense bush wouldn’t allow him to approach the back door. So he got out of his chair and crawled through the dirt and bushes.
“I had to get there,”he says. “It didn’t matter how much it hurt.”
When Butler arrived at the house,he traced the screams to the pool, where a three year old girl,Stephanie, was lying at the bottom. She had been born without arms and had fallen in the water and couldn’t swim. Her mother stood over her baby screaming loudly. Butler dove to the bottom of the pool and brought little Stephanie up to the deck. Her face was blue, she had no pulse and she was not breathing.
Butler immediately went to work performing CPR(心肺复苏) to revive her while Stephanie’s mother telephoned the fire department. She was told the rescue team was already out on a call .Helplessly, she sobbed and hugged Butler’s shoulders.
As Butler continued with his CPR,he calmly reassured Stephanie’s mother. “Don’t worry,”he said. “I was her arms to get out of the pool. It’ll be okay. I’m now her lungs. Together we can make it.”
Seconds later the little girl coughed, regained consciousness and began to cry. As they hugged and rejoiced together, the mother asked Butler how he knew it would be okay.
“When my legs were blown off in the war,I was all alone in a field,”he told her.“ No one was there to help except a little Vietnamese girl. As she struggled to drag me into her village, she whispered in broken English,‘It okay. You can live. I be your legs. Together we make it.’”
“This was my chance,”he told Stephanie’s mom,“to return the favor.”
