【题目】 Do you like to flaunt your expensive items? You could find yourself without friends! Scientists prove that expensive status symbols make you look less socially attractive.

Items such as a fancy car and a Rolex watch are often thought to increase our social standing and often come with a high price tag(标签).According to the latest research, however, it has the opposite effect and people would prefer to be friends with someone who places less value on material objects.

“Often we think that status symbols will make us look more socially attractive to others, “says Stephen Garcia, the study's lead author from the University of Michigan. He adds, “However, our research suggests that these status signals actually make us look less socially attractive.

The researchers conducted six studies which assessed how people presented themselves and how people viewed strangers. People who chose to wear higher status items tended to get a negative response, but people wanted to be friends with people who preferred lower status symbols.

The study took the role of the luxury item to see if it was possible that the expensive item itself played a part in people's reactions. The definition of a status symbol changed based on a person's socioeconomic status, but the same effect of keeping off potential friends was seen regardless of social position.

"At a social level, we may be wasting billions of dollars on expensive status symbols that finally keep others from wanting to associate with us, "says Kimberlee Weaver Livnat at the University of Haifa. She says, "And to the extent that close friendships are important to well-being, we may be unintentionally hurting ourselves.”

However, Patricia Chen of the National University of Singapore said this does not necessarily mean status symbols are a bad thing. She says, "Our findings right now only apply to the formation of new friendships, Status symbols may be beneficial at other times and in other settings, such as when trying to establish new business contacts.”

【题目】1You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how:

Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First set your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. 2

A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you realize what is happening to your time.

Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

Make good use of your time in class. 3 Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss next day, read that material. 4 If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.

Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried.

5You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

A. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.

B. There are other methods that might help you with your studying.

C. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.

D. No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.

E. This will help you understand the next class.

F. Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teacher says in class.

G. Maybe you are an average student.

【题目】阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

Do you know when and where the first film was made? It was in the 1880s, more than 120 years ago, that William Friese-Green made what we now think of as a film. The fathers of modern film are thought to be the Lumiere brothers from France. The first films ever made were silent. It was not until in 1927 that the first full-length “talking film” was shown in New York.

In 1896, film was introduced to China. The first Chinese film, Conquering Jun Mountain, was made in 1905. The first film made only by Chinese was The Difficult Couple, which was made in 1913. The Chinese film industry developed quite quickly—between 1948 and 1966, more than 600 full-length films were made, most about war.

People like to enjoy themselves when they are free and so they kill time in the cinema. Besides, they can learn more about the society, like various cultures, by watching films. Finally, although films present true pictures of life, they are higher than life. Good movies usually offer people hopes and faith.

【题目】 The seabird population on a small British island off the coast Devon and South Wales has increased quickly following the removal of rats.

There has been a growth in the numbers of Manx shearwater, puffins and guillemots on Lundy Island 15 years after a conservation project to remove its rats ended. The project was launched ‘in 2003 by the Landmark Trust, the National Trust and The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds ((RSPB)) ), and aimed to kill the rats because they were the biggest threat to the survival of the birds. A cull (选择性宰杀)costing 50,000 pounds was used to get rid of 40,000 rats on the island when puffin numbers fell to fewer than 10 pairs.

Helen Booker, senior conservation officer for RSPB in south-west England, said the organization is delighted with the results. This study clearly shows how quickly and positively seabirds respond to the removal of non-native predators (捕猎者)" she said. "Of course, we had expected major population increases when the project was launched, but the scale of this recovery has far beyond our expectations. "

Dean Jones, the inspector on Lundy, which is managed by the Landmark Trust, said the recovery of the seabirds was a positive, but that it is important to remain cautious."It is exciting to see this level of recovery in Manx shearwaters, one of our most important seabirds. In spring the island comes alive at night with the sound of these amazing birds. The increases in puffins, guillemots and razorbills are also very encouraging for the future of seabirds on Lundy and we are maintaining our attention to ensure rats cannot return to the island. "

A recent study found that nearly 10 percent of endangered bird, mammal, amphibian and reptile species could be saved by culling invasive (入侵的)mammals such as cats and rats on 169 islands. But rat removal programs have been controversial with some animal rights activists, who have argued that the black rat is one of the country’s most endangered mammals.

1Why did British carry out the project to remove rats?

A. To kill invasive species.B. To save seabirds in danger.

C. To keep balance in nature.D. To decrease the rat’s number.

2What can we infer about the rat removal project?

A. It is favored by animal rights groups.

B. It started when guillemot is nearly dying out.

C. It has protected 10% of species on UK’s 169 islands.

D. It contributes to more increases in seabirds than expected.

3What will be done next according to Dean Jones?

A. Plan the future of seabirds.B. Speed up the recovery of seabirds.

C. Keep a careful watch for rats.D. Continue to drive away rats and cats.

4Where is the text most likely from?

A. A news report.B. A research paper.

C. A biology textbook.D. A medical magazine.
