Children start out as natural scientists, eager to look into the world around them. Helping
them enjoy science can be easy; there's no need for a lot of scientific terms or expensive lab
equipment. You only have to share your children's curiosity. Firstly, listen to their questions.
I once visited a classroom of seven-year-olds to talk about science as a job. The children
asked me "textbook questions" about schooling, salary and whether I liked my job. When
I finished answering, we sat facing one another in silence. Finally I said, "Now that we're
finished with your lists, do you have questions of your own about science?"
After a long pause, a boy raised his hand, "Have you ever seen a grasshopper (蚱蜢)
eat? When I try eating leaves like that, I get a stomachache. Why?"
This began a set of questions that lasted nearly two hours.
Secondly, give them time to think. Studies over the past 30 years have shown that, after
asking a question, adults typically wait only one second or less for an answer, no time for a
child to think. When adults increase their "wait time" to three seconds or more, children give
more logical(符合逻辑) , complete and creative answers.
Thirdly, watch your language. Once you have a child involved in a science discussion,
don't jump in with "That's right" or "Very good". These words work well when it comes to
encouraging good behavior. But in talking about science, quick praise can signal that discussion
is over. Instead, keep things going by saying "That's interesting" or "I'd never thought of it that
way before", or coming up with more questions or ideas.
Never push a child to "Think". It doesn't make sense, children are always thinking, without
your telling them t9. What's more, this can turn a conversation into a performance. The child
will try to find the answer you want, in as few words as possible, so that he will be a smaller
target for your disagreement.
Lastly, show; don't tell. Real-life impressions of nature are far more impressive than any
lesson children can learn from a book or a television program. Let children look at their fingertips
through a magnifying glass (放大镜), and they' II understand why you want them to wash before
dinner. Rather than saying that water evaporates (蒸发) , set a pot of water to boil and let them
watch the water level drop.

1. According to the passage, children are natural scientists, and to raise their interest, the most important
thing for adults to do is ______.
A. to let them see the world around
B. to share the children's curiosity
C. to explain difficult phrases about science
D. to supply the children with lab equipment
2. In the last sentence of the first paragraph, the word "lists" could best be replaced by ______
A. any questions
B. any problems
C. questions from textbooks
D. any number of questions
3. According to the passage, children can answer questions in a more logical, complete and creative way
if adults ______.
A. ask them to answer quickly
B. wait for one or two seconds after a question
C. tell them to answer the next day
D. wait at least for three seconds after a question
4. The author mentions all of the following techniques for adults to share with their children's curiosity
except that adults should ______.
A. tell their children stories instead of reciting facts
B. offer their children chances to see things for themselves
C. be patient enough when their children answer questions
D. encourage their children to ask questions of their own

Knowing about yourself not only means finding out what you're good at and what you like, but also means
discovering what you're not good at and what you don't like. Both help you to see your aim in life.
Although most students would be unhappy if they failed a very difficult physics examination, they have in
fact learned a lot about themselves. They know that they should not become engineers or physical scientists.
So failing can help a student to live a happier life if he learns something from it. They may then decide on their
aims and choose the work they like and are fit for.
It is impossible to decide whether you like something until you have tried it. If you decide to play the piano,
you need to take more than one lesson before knowing whether you are really interested in it or able to do well.
It is not enough if you want to be a great pianist. You also have to like the hard practice and long training. If
you enjoy being a great pianist but hate the work, forget it.
It's a good plan to try as many ideas as possible when you are young. Then you will find out what your true
interests are.
1. If you say you really know yourself, _____.
A. you know what you don't like
B. you know what you are good at
C. you have no interest in your work
D. you've got the whole picture of yourself
2. Failing can turn into something good _____.

While most high school students spend most of their time worrying about who likes who,and
different re lationships between their classmates,I choose to focus on my school lessons and sports.
When I was young,my mother encouraged me to develop and keep friendship with boys in
order to build strong relationships. But she told me not to risk a good friendship with a boy with
the title of boyfriend. It's indeed a wise choice to stay friends with those of the opposite sex. In my
opinion, even though some high school relationships might continue after graduation, the probability
of them lasting much longer is so slim that there really is not a point to it.
Firstly you have to think about such a question-whether it is possible to hurt both of you,or
even hurt both of your future husbands or wives. My second point is that you still can date if you
hope marriage could possibly follow. Except this, there really is not any other reason for dating.
Some students desire relationships for a chance to be romantic. While these are nice to have, there
are many more important things at this point in our lives.
The titles of boyfriend and girlfriend put too much stress on a relationship between high school
students. Just staying as common friends may be the best choice for us. I strongly recommend we
should deal with it in an appropriate way and follow our teachers' advice if necessary.
1.The author writes this passage probably for ________ to read.
A.high school students
B.school teachers
C.parents and teachers

2.Between sexes, the relationship of being good friends might be ________ than that of being
boy/girlfriends.
A.weaker
B.safer
C.slimmer

3.How does the writer like the idea of dating among the students?
A.Dating is a nice chance for students to be romantic.
B.Studying is far more important than dating in school.
C.In high school dating can surely lead to future marriage.
D.Dating in high school is sure to hurt your future family.
4.The underlined word "it" in the last paragraph might refer to________.
A.the title of boyfriend or girlfriend at school
B.advice given by both teachers and parents
C.the pressure from school lessons and sports
D.the relationship between students of opposite sexes

Don't make sudden changes. Start slowly, by waking just 15 to 30 minutes earlier than usual. Get used to this for a few days. Then cut back another 15 minutes. Do this gradually until you get to your goal time.
Sleep earlier. You might be used to staying up late, perhaps watching TV or surfing the Internet. However, you just might fall asleep much sooner than you think.
Put your alarm away from your bed. You have to get up out of bed to shut it off. By then, you're up.
Now you just have to stay up.
Go out of the bedroom as soon as you shut off the alarm. Don't find an excuse to go back to bed. My
habit is to force myself into the bathroom. By the time I've washed my hand, and the toilet of course, and
looked at my ugly face in the mirror, I'm awake enough to face the day.
Allow yourself to sleep in once in a while, as long as it's not a regular thing. I do it maybe once a week or so.
Make it a reward. At first you're forcing yourself to do something hard, but if you do something
pleasurable as part of your morning routine, soon you will look forward to waking up early. My reward used to be to make a hot cup of coffee for myself and read a book. Now I look outside (or better yet, get
outside!) and watch the sky turn light. It's beautiful. It's now my favorite time of day.
Getting up early is a reward in itself for me and so will it be for you.
1. Which of the following does the writer suggest we do?
A. Get up at our goal time to start the new habit.
B. Shut off TV and the Internet, and face the day.
C. Get up at the same time every day to keep the habit.
D. Do something enjoyable in the morning to begin the day.
2. We should get into the bathroom right after we get out of bed because________.
A. that is part of our routine
B. we really need a cold wash
C. the alarm clock needs to be shut off
D. that will make ourselves completely awake
3. The writer enjoys ________most in the morning.
A. doing some washing
B. making a cup of coffee for himself
C. watching the daybreak
D. sleeping late, and thinking in bed
4. This passage is written to________.
A. share the writer's experience
B. give tips for becoming an early bird
C. persuade people to get up early
D. help get rewards from getting up early
