One activity that my family and I enjoy do every summer is taking our boat out. It¡¯s so many fun! We always invite one of our neighbour, Paul, to go with us. Paul is also my best friend, whom is the same age as me. He is good for swimming and fishing. I still remember last year he catches a very big fish. Every time we go boating, my father drives the boat. Sometimes he drives them really fast when we are sitting in front of the boat. We are very excited and happily. My mother always brings a lot of fruits and snacks. When we are hungry or thirsty, and we can eat them.

I still remember¡ªmy hands and my fingers still remember¡ªwhat used to lie in store for us on our return to school from the holidays. The trees in the school yard would be in full leaf again and the old leaves would be lying around like a muddy sea of leaves.

¡°Get that all swept up£¡¡± the headmaster would tell us. ¡°I want the whole place cleaned up, at once£¡¡± There was enough work there, to last over a week. Especially since the only tools with which we were provided were our hands, our fingers, and our nails. ¡°Now see that it's done properly, and be quick about it£¬¡± the headmaster would say to the older pupils, ¡°or you'll have to answer for it£¡¡±

So at an order from the older boys we would all line up like peanuts about to cut and gather in crops. If the work was not going as quickly as the headmaster expected, the big boys, instead of giving us a helping hand, used to find it simpler to beat us with branches pulled from the trees. In order to avoid these blows(Ź´ò), we used to bribe(»ß¸) the older boys with the juicy cakes we used to bring for our midday meals. And if we happened to have any money on us, the coins changed hands at once. If we did not do this, if we were afraid of going home with an empty stomach or an empty purse, the blows were redoubled. They hit us so violently and with such evil enjoyment that even a deaf and dumb person would have realized that we were being whipped(³é´ò) not so much to make us work harder, but rather to beat us into a state of obedience(·þ´Ó) in which we would be only too glad to give up our food and money.

Occasionally one of us, worn out by such calculated cruelty, would have the courage to complain to the headmaster. He would of course be very angry, but the punishment he gave the older boys was always very small¡ªnothing compared to what they had done to us. And the fact is that however much we complained, our situation did not improve in the slightest. Perhaps we should have let our parents know what was going on, but somehow we never dreamed of doing so; I don't know whether it was loyalty or pride that kept us silent, but I can see now that we were foolish to keep quiet about it, for such beatings were completely foreign to our nature.

More than 2.25 billion cups of coffee are drunk throughout the world each day, and it¡¯s likely that many taste bitter. Now, a new study suggests that coffee fans can make their drink sweeter by changing the color of their cups.

Researchers from Oxford set out to prove whether the claim that coffee drunk from a white cup tastes bitter was true. They used 36 volunteers and three different colored cups---blue, white and transparent(͸Ã÷µÄ) glass--- to examine the claim.

In one experiment, the white cup increased the intensity (Ũ¶È) of the coffee taste relative to the transparent cup. Then, in a second experiment, coffee drunk from the white cup was found to taste less sweet when compared to the other colored cups, while the blue cup made the coffee taste the sweetest.

The scientists believe that the color brown may be associated with bitterness, and coffee in a white cup appears the brownest. ¡°Our study clearly shows that the color of a cup does influence our sense of the coffee taste,¡± leading author Dr George Doorn, wrote in an article for The Conversation. ¡°The effect of the color of the cup on the taste of the coffee reported here suggests that cafe owners should carefully consider the color of their cups,¡±he said,¡°The potential effects may spell the difference between a one-time purchase and a return customer.¡± Actually, the idea that color can change the food and drink taste came out many years ago. A study published last year reported that red, strawberry-flavored cake served on a white plate was rated as 10 percent sweeter than the same food presented on a black plate.

There is a story about a man who lost his legs and left arm in an accident. After the accident, only a finger and thumb on his right hand remained.

He was a brilliant, creative, and educated man. He had gained a lot of experience while traveling around the world, so he became very depressed after his accident. He was afraid that he would spend the rest of his life suffering and would no longer be able to spend his life in a meaningful way. Then, he realized that he still had partial function of his right hand and could still write even though it was very difficult. An idea occurred to him. ¡°Why not write to other people who need encouragement? ¡±

He wrote to the prison ministry about sending letters to the prisoners. The prison minister replied, ¡°Writing to the prisoners is acceptable, but your letters will not be answered. ¡±

Filled with excitement, the man knew he could write his letters. He began sending one-way messages of God¡¯s love, hope, strength, and encouragement. He wrote twice a week, testing his strength and ability to the limit. He poured his heart and soul into his words and shared his experience, sense of humor, optimism, and faith.

It was difficult to write those letters, especially without hope of a reply. One day he received a letter from the prison ministry. It was a short note from the officer who monitored and checked the prison mail.

The letter said, ¡°Please write on the best paper you can afford. Your letters are passed from cell to cell until they literally fall to pieces! ¡±

No matter what circumstances life may present, we all have unique experiences, abilities, and God-given talents. We can discover ways to reach others who desperately need messages of encouragement and strength.

How do you get a good night¡¯s sleep?

You may put your pillow (ÕíÍ·) at the proper height, drink a glass of hot milk or maybe listen to some light music before bedtime. 1. When World Sleeping Day falls on March 21, it will be a good time to explore a long-ignored fact that may make you feel tired after you wake up. Scientists have discovered that the position of your spine (¼¹×µ) is very important when you sleep.

2. Let¡¯s have a look at the advantages and disadvantages of each position.

On your back

Sleeping on your back is the ideal (ÀíÏëµÄ) position to be in. First of all, your spine is in the best position. 3. The downside is the greater likelihood of snoring (´ò÷ý) and sleep apnea (ÖÏÏ¢).

Lying on belly

4. Dr Vaclav Vojta, a US child development specialist, said this is bad for your back because it takes away the natural curve (ÇúÏß) of your lumbar (Ñü²¿µÄ) spine. But he also noted that this helps to prevent some snoring and sleep apnea.

On your side

Sleeping on our sides happened naturally while we were in the womb (×Ó¹¬). 5. Plus, sleeping on your side (the left side in particular) has been reported to reduce troublesome digestive problems like heartburn. The downside is the ¡°dead arm¡± and finger numbness (Âéľ) from this position.

A. Lying face down with your legs straight and your arms right by your sides is a bad idea.

B. Sleeping on your side can be a quick fix for snoring and can help to improve breathing.

C. Do you and your friends ever talk about your sleeping position with each other?

D. And a new study suggests that the sleeping position has something to do with it.

E. Of the three sleeping positions, which one do you usually go for?

F. You are also less likely to have digestive (Ïû»¯µÄ) problems.

G. But one thing you may tend to ignore is sleeping positions.
