arrange for sb. to do sth.

be located in/at “坐落于……” Located.

故将was改为is.

have no trouble (in) doing sth.“做某事儿没有困难”,介词后接动名词作宾语。

故将the改为an。

分析句子成分可知,“through which they gained lots of experience”是定语从句,在定语从句中,前面有介词的时候应用which, which指代整个主句。故将that改为which。

in addition to“除……之外(还有)”,to是介词,接宾语此处没有宾语,故去掉addition后的to。

小题10. 考查名词所有格。 这里指女主人的厨艺,用名词所有格。故将hostess改为hostess’。

【题目】阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。

I was 13 years old. My family had moved to Southern California from North Florida a year before. I hit adolescence with a vengeance. I was angry and rebellious, with little regard for anything my parents had to say, particularly if it had to do with me. Like so many teenagers, I struggled to escape from anything that didn't agree with my picture of the world. A “brilliant without need of guidance” kid, I rejected any overt offering of love. In fact, I got angry at the mention of the word love.

One night, after a particularly difficult day, I___________ shut the door and got into bed. As I lay down in the privacy of my bed, my hands slipped under my pillow. There was an envelope. I pulled it out and on the envelope it said, “To read when you're alone.”

Since I was alone, no one would know whether I read it or not, so I opened it. It said Mike, I know life is hard right now, I know you are frustrated and I know we don't do everything right. I also know that I love you completely and nothing you do or say will ever change that. I am here for you if you ever need to talk, and if you don't, that's okay. Just know that no matter where you go or what you do in your life, I will always love you and be proud that you are my son. I'm here for you and I love youthat will never change. Love, Mom. That was the first of several “To read when you're alone” letters. They were never mentioned until I was an adult.

Today I travel the world helping people. I was in Sarasota, Florida, teaching a seminar when, at the end of the day, a lady came up to me and shared the difficulty she was having with her son. We walked out to the beach, and I told her of my mom's undying love and about the “To read when you're alone” letters. Several weeks later, I got a card that said she had written her first letter and left it for her son.

That night as I went to bed, I put my hands under my pillow and remembered the relief I felt every time I got a letter. In the midst of my turbulent teen years, the letters were the calm assurance that I could be loved in spite of me, not because of me. Just before I fell asleep I thanked God that my mom knew what I, an angry teenager, needed. Today when these as of life get stormy, I know that just under my pillow there is that calm assurance that loveconsistent, abiding, unconditional lovechanges lives.

I was never neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her projects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both get tired of each other.

War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.

The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.

Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn’t notice Kate had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “thanks.”

Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together; giving in, cleaning up and holding on.

“Will I be able to work until I’m 70?” Those were my first words when I learned in 2014, at the age of 50, that I had Parkinson’s disease. I had not planned for that question to pop out of my mouth, but it did. Perhaps I was worried about my money. The size of my retirement account makes early retirement seem impossible. But mainly I think I asked that question because work, for better or worse, has become central to my identity. The idea that my career as a historian would end soon felt truly disturbing.

As professors, we often complain about our jobs: we teach too much, we are paid too little, and the library needs more books. But I can’t imagine a better career. We teach young people, and we find the time to read and write about topics we love. We receive a degree of respect. Even my doctor calls me “Professor”.

And, most importantly, we have relative job security. When I received my diagnosis, my question about keeping my job was not ridiculous. In a market-based social system, the threat of job loss is terrifying. Imagine the pressure faced by a Parkinson’s sufferer with no job security. It could be disastrous for someone who needs manual dexterity at work, such as a construction worker.

In contrast, I am lucky: I have tenure(终身职位), which gives me a feeling of security that even popular entertainers may lack. Tenure does not guarantee me a job as long as I can perform y duties.

Will I be able to work until I’m 70? I think so. I know that my family and I will face new challenges, but I don’t expect a decline in my job performance. My students may find my appearance a bit odd, but if they do, then that will be a “teachable moment”.

【1】What did the author worry about first when he learned he was ill?

A. He didn’t have enough money for an operation.

B. The disease would ruin his career.

C. He wouldn’t live until the age of 70.

D. He would be forced to retire early.

【2】According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Professors always complain about their jobs.

B. Professors have no time to do anything else but teach.

C. The author doesn’t know what he would do if he were not a professor.

D. The author thinks he is respected by others because of his work.

【3】The underlined phrase in the third paragraph, “manual dexterity” probably means _____________.

A. the ability to use one’s hands

B. the ability to see clearly

C. the ability to use one’s mind

D. the ability to solve problems

【4】 The best title for this passage is _________________________.

A. Losing My Career to Illness

B. The Threat of Job Loss

C. Keep Away from Disease

D. The Pressure of Parkinson’s
