Eighty-year-old retired tailor, James McKay, spent Saturday night in jail after   1   thirty-year-old Keith
Smith over the head   2   his walking stick. McKay's wife, Laurence told us that while McKay is usually a
3   person, he had been   4   to this act of violence by getting wet just once too often.
Smith lives above the McKays and it appears that not only is he a keen gardener, he is also a   5   collector.
Unfortunately for him, the water he sent over his balcony every day ended up on the McKay's, or too often,
on the McKays   6  .
"For the last fortnight, since Smith moved into the flat above us, we have hardly dared to go to our   7  ,"
said Laurene. She added, that it wasn't so much the water falling onto their balcony from Smith watering his
plant   8   bothered them, it was more the way he cleaned his fish tanks. "We'd be   9   there happily reading
our newspapers, when  10  so much water would come from above that we'd be as wet as if we'd  11  with
our clothes on! Neither could we get rid of the  12  of fish!"
And on Saturday evening it was just too  13 . "It was James's birthday," explained Laurene, "and I'd made
him a birthday cake. The candles were a great sight as you can imagine, but James didn't get to blow them
out."  14 , Smith emptied one of his larger tanks over his balcony and both the McKays and the cake were wet
15 . Rarely had Laurene seen McKay move so fast. "I couldn't  16  him. He was up there in a flash. It was
the fastest I@^@^@d seen him move since 1964."
Smith is not going to take things further with the police. He has also promised to change his  17   from now
on. And what of James McKay?  18  he left the police station, a large crowd of supporters sang him, "Happy
Birthday  19  the most exciting birthday  20 !" said the cheerful old man. "The best since my adolescence I'd
say!"

I came to study in the United States a year ago. Yet I did not know the American society until I was
injured in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court. After the
accident, my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and decided to repay him one day.
But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was astonished. He had good
reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible for my injury, I’d have to have a good lawyer. Now that he had helped me to find a good doctor, it was only
fair that I should pay him.
But every time I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three
patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each
time. The final examination report only contained ten lines, and it cost me $215.
My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met. But after that he avoided seeing me at all. He knew
very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited
to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided to fire him. And he made me pay him $770.
Now I had to act as my own lawyer. Because of my inexperience, I told the insurance the date I was
leaving America. Knowing that, they played for, time …and I left without getting a cent.
My experiences taught me two things about America: firstly, in a country like America money is
everything. It is more important than friendship, honor or professional morality; secondly, foreigners are
still being unfairly treated. So when we talk about America, we should see both its advantages and
disadvantages.

A. he felt sorry for the author.
B. he thought it was a chance to make some money
C. he knew the doctor was a very good one

2. A good lawyer is important for the author to ________.

A. be properly treated
B. talk with the person responsible for the accident
C. recover before he leaves America
D. eventually get the responsible party to pay for his injury

3. Which is wrong according the the passage?

A. The author has learned a lot through the experience.
B. Everything about America is advantageous.
C. The author's roommate helped him but charged for that.
D. The author's final examination report only contained ten lines but cost $215.

4. The word charge in the passage means _____.

A. be responsible
B. entertain
C. ask to pay
D. repay

5. What conclusion can you draw from this story?

A. Going to court is something very common in America.
B. One must be very careful while driving a car.
C. There are more disadvantages in America than advantages.
D. Money is more important than other things in the US.

I was very disappointed not to be able to go to the jazz concert last Friday. The advertisement in the
paper said that you could buy tickets at the theatre box in Richland Hills any day between 10:00 and
4:00.Since I work from 9:00 to 5:30, the only time I could go to the theatre was during my 45-minute
lunch break. Unfortunately, the theatre is on the other side of the town, and the bus service between my
office and Richland Hills is not very good. But if you are lucky, you can make the round trip in 45 minutes. Last Monday. I stood at the bus stop for 15 minutes waiting for the bus. By the time I saw one come
around the corner, there was not enough time left to make the trip.So I gave up and went back to the
office. The same thing happened on Tuesday, and again next day. On Thursday, my luck changed. I got
on a bus right away and arrived at the theatre in exactly 20 minutes. When I got there, however, I found
a long line of people at the box office. I heard one man say he had been waiting in line for over an hour.
Realizing I would not have enough time to wait in line, I caught the next bus and headed back across the
town. By Friday I realized my only hope was to make the trip by taxi, it was expensive, but I felt it would
be worth it to hear the concert. The trip by taxi only took 10 minutes, but felt like an hour to me. When I
got to the theatre, I was relieved to see that nobody was waiting in line. The reason, however, I quickly
discovered, was that they had already sold all the tickets.
1.The man learned          that there would be a concert last Friday.
A. from his friends
B. from one of his work-mates
C. over the radio
D. from the newspaper
2. He tried to go to the theatre every day but managed to get there only _______.
A. once
B. twice

A. surprise
B. pleased

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our
environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. To
some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of education can make a genius
out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment
will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits
of person's intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his
environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.
It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the
blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be intelligence. Thus if we take
two unrelated people at random from population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be
completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as
intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar
intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.
Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might
send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would
soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth
plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with
each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.

1. The writer is in favor of the view that man's intelligence is given to him________.

A. at birth
B. through education
C. both at birth and through education
D. neither at birth nor through education

2. If a child is born with low intelligence, he can_________.

A. become a genius
B. still become a genius if he should be given special education
C. not reach his intelligence in his life.
D. reach his intelligence limits in rich surroundings

3. The example of the twins going to a university and to a factory separately shows_________.

A. the importance of their intelligence
B. the role of environment on intelligence
C. the importance of their positions
D. the part that birth plays

4. The best title of the passage can be _________.

A. Surroundings
B. Effect of education
C. Dependence on Environment

You want to know about my staying in  America, right? Well, to tell you the truth, it is really an             eye-opening experience study here.
In China, I had English classes five times a week since fifth grade. However, I didn't know
how different textbook English could be from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School,
Conmecticut.
When I first studied English, I was told to say, "I am fine." when people say "How are you ?"But in the US, I found that people say, "I am good." or "I am tired."
One day, someone greeted me with "What's up ?" It made me confused. I thought for a moment and      then smiled because I didn't know what to say.
Since then, I have discovered more and more differences between Chinese and US cultures.
To my surprise, US girls spend a lot of time in the burning sun to get a tan. However, in China, girls try every possible way to get their skin paler, or "whiter."
I also surprised by how hard-working. US students are .In China, schoolwork is almost everything ,so we study hard and that' it. But here a "good" student gets good grades, does a lot for the public and plays  sports or music.
The kids here are so talented ,I am starting to be sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age  and that I have never thought about sports.
