11.When did you last go outside for sports?Some students might need a while to remember.But for students in Yangzhou University it is easy to remember as they need to run in the morning at least three times a week during their two terms.The university even uses fingerprint punch-in clocks(指纹签到机) to manage students'records.However,some students still try to skip(不参加) morning running.To them,sports are just not important enough.
Now colleges are seeing a change in the student lifestyle from outdoor enthusiasts to indoor couch potatoes and Internet addicts.The Internet and various on-campus services,from food delivery to laundry,are leading to a student culture of staying in dormitories.A student can have every need met without leaving the dormitory.
In the past two years Zhang Yi,20,a junior majoring in law at Yangzhou University,has never been outside for sports except during physical education class."I don't think there is anything wrong with sleeping late in the morning and wanting to stay in the dormitory in my spare time.I have more fun doing things on my computer than playing on the sports ground in wet clothes."said Zhang.
"With social networking sites,online games and micro-blogging added to already tight schedules,sports are often the last thing to be considered."said Cheng Jie,21,a senior majoring in civil engineering at the Southeast University in Nanjing.
But Jin Yinghua,a professor at Beijing Sports University,said that sports are not only for keeping fit,but also an irreplaceable(不能替代的)"education"for students.Sports are not only a way for students to train their body,but also an important way to learn responsibility,teamwork and devotion.

55  D  主旨题.A项,"指纹签到机被广泛使用",根据第一段第四句"The university even uses fingerprint punch-in clocks(指纹签到机) to manage students'records."可知指纹签到机是用来管理学生记录的,并不是说被广泛使用了,故错误;B项,"一些大学生记忆不好",第一段并未涉及大学生记忆问题,故错误;
However,some students still try to skip morning running.To them,sports are just not important enough."
With social networking sites, online games and micro-blogging added to already tight schedules, sports are often the last thing to be considered."
57  A   细节题. But Jin Yinghua,a professor at Beijing Sports University, said that sports are not only for keeping fit,but also an irreplaceable"education"for students."

1.In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition.Some value it highly,believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity (繁荣),others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills.For them,playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs.In their single-minded pursuit of success,the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.
However,while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed,others take an opposite attitude.In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players,they strongly blame competition.Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society.Teaching these young people,I often observe in them a desire to fail.They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success.By not trying,they always have an excuse:"I may have lost,but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try."What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost,that would mean a lot.Such a loss would be a measure of their worth.Clearly,this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves.Both are based on the mistaken belief that one's self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others.Both are afraid of not being valued.Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.

2.A dog-lover has invented a high-tech way of feeding his pet by Twitter(推特,流行社交网络).Computer expert Nat Morris,30,has designed a system to give his pet a"tweet treat"by sending him a Twitter message.
His dog Toby gets some delicious dog biscuits from a computer-controlled food machine whenever Nat sends a message to"@feedtoby".
Nat often works away from home and isn't always able to feed Toby by hand.But his new invention allows Nat to feed his dog from anywhere in the world.
Nat said,"Toby absolutely loves it.At first he didn't know what was going on.Now he sits underneath the machine,wagging his tail and waiting for the treats to drop."
Nat fills the food machine with small pieces of dog biscuits,but not too many in case four-year-old Toby gets too many messages.And Nat has even equipped his house with an online camera so he can see Toby enjoying the food at his home.
But one problem is that friends and family have been so amazed with the"Tweet treat"machine that.they have starting to send tweets to Toby too.So Nat has had to restrict feeding time to make sure Toby doesn't turn into Tubby.
"People have been sending him food at all hours of the day,so I had to limit it to between 9a.m.and 9p.m..I'm thinking of doing an updated one which measures his weight before he is fed,just to make sure he's not putting on too much puppy fat,"explained Nat.
How Nat's Twitter Feeder Works:
When a message is sent to@feedtoby it is received by a mini-computer that is linked to the food machine.
When the mini-computer receives the message,a bell rings and Toby comes running over and sits in front of the feeding machine.Next the machine's motor pulls open a trap door which releases a serving of food.
The doggy biscuits then drops into Toby's food bowl.Finally a digital camera takes a photo of him and sends it back to Nat on Twitter-so he knows Toby has been fed.

Did you know the meaning of a word may change over time?Many English words we know now had different meanings a long time ago.One example is the word nice.Around the year l 300,nice was first used in English to mean"stupid".Two hundred years later,nice began to carry a"better"meaning.If people said a book was written nicely,they meant the book was written"clearly"or"carefully",not"stupidly".After l800,nice began to take its meaning like"kind"or"friendly".Since then,people have thought of nice as a word with good meanings.
A good change of a word's meaning like this example of nice is called AMELIORATION.Though we don't use nice to mean"stupid"any more,it is fun to know how much a word's meaning can change from its start!

3.Encouraging pupils to keep noise to a minimum should be a valuable component of all children's education,according to a new research.
Dr.Helen Lees,from Stirling University's school of education,says that"enforced(强制的) silence"is seen as a punishment and often acts to  suppress children's natural ability.But she says that teaching children about the benefits of"enforced silence"-deliberate stillness that gives them the opportunity to focus and reflect in a stress-free environment-can have a significant effect on pupils'concentration and behavior.
It is the latest in a string of researches to establish a link between the classroom environment and pupils'academic ability.
A study almost a decade ago in London found that children's exam results were cut by as much as a third if they were taught in noisy classrooms.Teaching unions have also called for a limit of 26℃to be put on classroom temperatures because teachers and pupils struggle to work in hot conditions,and some educationalists claim that too much clutter(杂乱的东西) on classroom walls can prevent children from concentrating.
Dr.Less said,"When we take some research on school settings and put it all together,what we see is that education without silence does not make much sense.In areas of better learning outcomes,better self-confidence and well-being measures,enforced silence in a person's life and an individual's education is shown throughout the relevant research to be a benefit."
Dozens of schools across Britain have already introduced periods of"reflective silence"into the timetable.
Kevin Houston,head of Sheringdale Primary,south London,has just introduced a minute's silence at the start of twice-weekly meetings in which children are taught breathing techniques and encouraged to reflect.The school plans to introduce it into classrooms every day.
