To celebrate the end of our exams, my friends and I went to a fast food restaurant. We   26     hamburgers and Coca Colar at the counter. When our   27   came, I started walking towards an empty table. By bad luck, my purse strap(带子) got   28   on a chair and the tray(托盘) that I was holding slipped    29   my hands and went flying in the air. The tray, and its contents,    30   on a man who was just about to   31   a bite of his sandwich. I stared, greatly   32   , as the drinks soaked(浸湿) his white shirt.

Then I   33   my eyes and prepared myself for his burst of   34  . Instead, he said “It’s OK” to   35   me before he disappeared into washroom.

Still shaky and unsure   36   to do next, my friends and I went to a table and sat there, trying our best to look   37  . A moment later, the man came out of the washroom and   38   our table. My heart almost stopped   39  . I thought he was going to ask for my father’s   40    and call him.

To my surprise, he merely smiled at us, handed us some cash and said, “   41   yourself new hamburgers.” He then walked   42   without even finishing his food.

He could have made what was already an uncomfortable situation worse,   43   he chose a different way and gave us a reason to believe that there is still   44   in this world. I’ll never   45   his actions.

James Langston Hughes finally arrived in New York on September 4, 1921 to attend Colombia University. Langston felt frustrated at Colombia due to the discrimination of his white classmates. His grades began to suffer and finally he left and looked for a job.
Job were still hard to come by for most blacks. He longed to work on a ship that would sail abroad. After much persistence, he headed to Africa on a freighter ( 货船 ). While moving on to Italy, Hughed was robbed and left stranded (helpless) wanting to return to the United States. He tried to get a job on a ship heading for the U.S.A. but was told they only hired the white. In this depressed state of mind he wrote, “I, Too, Sing America.”
He returned to America and found the Harlem Renaissance was spreading across racial boundaries(种族界线). Many black poets and authors were now published in mainstream publications. Hughes was warmly welcomed by his peers (同辈)and recognized for the poetry he wrote while traveling.

III.阅读理解

The blue tits(山雀) have been inspecting the nest-box again this year. The male is the house-hunter but the female will make the final choice. He lands at the hole and turns his head to expose his white cheeks as a signal to attract the female from where she has been feeding.

Among many birds that nest in holes, the male has a light-coloured patch on its plumage(鸟羽) which acts as signal for drawing the female’s attention to a suitable nesting-place. Unlike the blue tit, the redstart(红尾鸲) may be only the male that strikingly coloured and the female is not beautiful.

A few years ago I was lucky enough to spot a pair of redstarts in action in a Walsh wood. The male was leading an interested female to holes that he had previously(先前) checked out. He sat at the entrance of each hole and put his head on to show off his white forehead, or his head in to reveal(显露) his tail.

If the female failed to react to his visual signals, the male sometimes sang for extra effect, while gliding towards her on spread wings and tail. Once the female accepts by following the male through the hole the displays stop, you must be at the right place at the right time to watch them.

36. How do the blue tits choose their nest?

A. They choose their nest together.

B. The male chooses their nest.

C. The house-hunter chooses their nest.

D. The female chooses their nest.

37. The writer was lucky to see ________.

A. how the male made his tricks

B. how an interested female played with the male happily

C. what the male displayed and won the female

D. that the male tried his best but failed to attract the female

38. You can spot a pair of redstarts in a Walsh wood ________.

A. at any time        B. regularly    C. in April    D. occasionally

39. The writer is probably ________.

A. a bird expert     B. a bird-hunter   C. a bird raiser   D. a scientist

There was one shop in the town of Mufulira which was widely known for its racial discrimination. It was a drugstore .While Europeans were served at the counter ,a long line of Africans queued at the window and often not only were kept waiting but were treated rudely by the shop assistants .One day I was determined to make a public protest (抗议)against this kind of thing ,and many of the schoolboys in my class followed me to the store.

I simply went into the shop and asked the manager politely for some medicine. As soon as he saw me standing in the place where only European customers were allowed to stand ,he shouted at me in a bastard (怪声怪气的)language which is only used by a boss when speaking to his servants .I stood at the counter and politely requested in proper English that I should be served .The manager became angry and said , “Even if you stand till Christmas ,I will never serve you .”

I went to the District Commissioner’s office .Fortunately ,he was out ,for he was one of the old school; however ,I saw a young District Officer who was a friend of mine .He was very concerned to hear my story and told me that all I had to do was come to him personally and he would buy my medicine for me .I protested that that was not good enough .I asked him to accompany me back to the store and to make a protest to the manager .This he did ,and I well remember him saying to the manager , “Here is Mr. Kaunda who is a responsible member of the Urban Advisory Council, and you treat him like a common servant .” The manager of the drugstore apologized and said , “If only he had introduced himself and explained who he was ,then ,of course ,I should have given him proper service.”

I had to explain once again that he had missed my point .Why should I have to introduce myself every time I went into a store…any more than I should have to buy my medicine by going to a European friend ? I want to prove that any man of any color ,whatever his position ,should have the right to go into any shop and buy what he wanted .After all, the money which I paid across the counter was exactly the same money as was paid by a European customer.
