Tony Burke, Australia’s environment minister, says he won’t decide until next year whether the koala should be protected as an endangered species. He was expected to make his decision by the end of October. But that decision has been put off. Burke said he needed more time to go over the latest information about the koala’s population.
In September, an Australian Senate committee reported that there was no question the koala’s population is on the decrease. “But they may not yet be eligible (符合条件) for listing as a threatened species,” said Senator Doug Cameron. “To have such a significant Australian icon(偶像) included on the threatened species list would be a national shame.”
The koala is found only in the eucalyptus (桉树) forests of Australia. And its population is reported to have fallen sharply for many reasons, including the cutting down of forests to make way for human beings’ development, their own illness, climate change and killings by other animals such as wild dogs. And every year many koalas are hit by cars as they are trying to cross the busy roads.
Putting off the decision on protection for the koala “is really bad news,” said Debbie Pointing, the president of the Koala Action Group. “We’ve worked tirelessly for many years to gather data on the populations,” Pointing said. “That data should be enough to make a decision.”
However, Burke pointed out that the Australian government had spent at least $6.3 million on koala conservation efforts since 1996. senators listed efforts that are already underway in Queensland – the construction of special koala bridges as well as fences along roads, to keep the animals out of harm’s way.
Some people say that is not enough. “What we’re doing at the moment is likely to drive this species to extinction,” Queensland University zoologist Bill Ellis said.
“Koalas are an iconic Australian animal,” Burke told Australians. “They hold a special place in the hearts of Australians.”
But it is a fact that if more isn’t done to protect the koala, they might soon hold a place only in Australians’ memories.

For years and years people have been saying that the railways are dead.“We can do without railways” people say,as if motorcars and planes made the railways unnecessary. We all keep hearing that trains are slow, that they lose money, that they’re dying. But this is far from the truth. In these days of expensive oil,the railways have become highly competitive with motorcars and planes. If you want to carry people or goods from place to place, they’re cheaper than planes. And they have much in common with planes.A plane goes in a strange line and so does a railway. What is more,it takes you from the heart of a city into the heart of another. It doesn’t 1eave you as a plane does, miles and miles from the city center. It doesn’t hold you up as a car does,in endless traffic jams. And a single train can carry goods which no plane or motorcar could ever do.Far from being dead, the railways are very much alive.Modern railway lines give you a smooth, untroubled journey.Where else can you eat well, sleep in comfort, feel safe and enjoy the scene while you are traveling at speed at the same time? And we are only at the beginning. For we have just entered the age of super-fast trains, traveling at 1 50 miles an hour and more.Soon we will be wondering why we spent so much on motorways we can't use because we have not enough money to buy the oil and planes we can't fly in for the same reason.

In China, most people ride bikes to school,or to work,or to places where they want to go.So China is called “kingdom of bicycles”.
But Americans are a people on the wheel.Wherever you go, you will see cars. There are so many cars that there is a traffic jam here and there. Now, more and more Americans would not consider it a healthy way of life.In fact, many Americans are strongly against the advancement of the wheel. We should encourage people to use less cars to save our environment and the energy.
Everyone wants to reduce pollution. But the pollution problem is very serious.People drive cars and the waste gas from them causes air pollution. On the other hand, the need for energy increases every day, and some sources of energy are running out. Oil will last for no more than 40 years, while coal could last another 300 years. The way we’re heading is towards a world where people are going to go cold and hungry. Now in China many rich men live away from downtown. On holidays they go to some big cities and places of interest. Most of them use their own cars. But China is a country with a population of over 1.3 billion. So, if you have enough money in the future, what will you do?
