【题目】Letter One

Dear Editor,

After I finish my homework, I often go online and chat with my friends. Sometimes I play Internet games. But my parents hate to see me playing games on the computer. Maybe they have heard too much news about how QQ and Internet games harm children. Once I went to a net bar to play games after school. But after that I told my parents that I was playing basketball at school. I said so because I didn’t want to make them unhappy. I feel bad about it. However, I need to rest for a while by playing computer games after studying for a long time. I really want my parents to understand that. Do foreign parents do the same to their children? Please help me.

Li Ping, Nantong

Letter Two

Dear Li Ping,

I think it’s not strange for parents to keep their children away from anything bad. Foreign parents will do the same as your parents! They may not let their children watch TV for too long a time, or like your parents, they don’t want their children to play computer games.

Talk to your parents and be honest to them, I think. Tell them what you are doing and why you are doing so to make them understand you. It’s never good to do things behind your parents’ backs. They aren’t fools as you think sometimes! Our parents seem to know what is the best for us. Remember: to be honest is the best way.

Good luck,

Rebecca

【题目】As the new semester begins, millions of college students across the country are trying hard to remember how best to write a paper or, more likely, how best to delay that paper.

Procrastination is the thief of time and a lot of students suffer form it. They can spend whole days in the library doing nothing but staring into space, eating snacks, surfing the Internet, watching videos and looking at other students sitting around them, who, most likely are doing nothing either.

Paralyzed (使失去活力) by their habit to procrastinate, they write micro blogs about their fears, asking their online friends if they sometimes have the same issue. But this does nothing to break the spell (魔咒).

According to a recent report, 95 percent of us procrastinate at some point and 20 percent of the world’s population are always procrastinating. The figures are disappointing. Procrastinators are less wealthy, less healthy and less happy than those who don’t delay. Procrastinators like to find excuses to justify their behavior, but BBC columnist Rowan Pelling says they are all wrong.

Many procrastinators tell themselves they are perfectionists who work best under pressure. Pelling says this is non sense, as work done at the last minute is more likely to have mistakes than work done on time. The behavior of procrastinators often makes them feel ashamed, inconveniences others and annoys loved ones.

Pelling also points out that procrastination feels particularly delinquent(过失的) in a society that thinks of speedy action as admirable, and, at times, even as a moral good.

Fortunately, social scientists have thrown their weight behind efforts to understand this behavioral mistake and offer strategies to control it. Piers Steel, a Canadian social scientist and author of The Procrastination Equation, believes human is “designed” to procrastinate. Nevertheless, he suggests a couple of good ways to get through the task at hand.

【1】Which behavior belongs to procrastination?

A. Never dream away the time.

B. Always complete the tasks ahead of time.

C. Never put off till tomorrow what should be done today.

D. Always wait to work until the “good mood” or “good time”.

【2】According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?

A. Procrastination makes people waste their time.

B. Speedy action is considered as a moral standard in the society.

C. procrastinators usually complete their tasks perfectly.

D. Procrastination is common among people.

【3】What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows?

A. Ways to handle the study pressures.

B. Introduction to the book The Procrastination Equation.

C. More examples to illustrate procrastination

D. Measures to deal with procrastination.

While serious training is important for all dogs, playtime is just as important. 【1】 Use these games to help teach your dog how to play.

1. Hide and Seek

Hide and seek isn’t just for kids. Dogs can really enjoy this game. Pick up one of your dog’s favorite toys or treats. Tell your dog to stay. 2 When you are ready, call your dog to come to you. If possible, squeak(使吱吱叫)the toy or shake the treats. Reward your dog with praise and the toy/treat when she finds you.

2. Fetch

Many dogs have a natural ability to fetch. Other dogs can be taught how. 3 Play indoors with a soft toy or outdoors in a fenced-in area with a ball or disc. For dogs that really love to run, try this game of fetch!

3. Find the Treat

Dogs have superior senses of smell, and most love to use their noses to find food. Let your dog use her brain and her nose to find hidden goodies. First, have your dog stay out of sight. Then, hide her favorite treats in various places around the room. 4 If help is needed, you can lead her around or point to areas for her to explore.

Whatever the game, safety comes first! Remember to watch your dog for signs of exhaustion or overheating when you are playing. Stop if your dog seems tired or shows signs of anxiety. 5 When other dogs or people are around, it may create a dangerous distraction(分神).

A. Then, go to find a good hiding place.

B. Try different games to see which your dog responds to best.

C. A good game of fetch can be played almost anywhere.

D. You can include games in training as well.

E. Also be aware of your surroundings when playing with your dog.

F. Encourage your dog to play with other dogs.

G. Bring your dog back in and tell her to “go find!”

One in five people carry a “smart gene” variant(变体)linked to long lifespan, bigger forebrains and enhanced mental ability, researchers have found.

“We’ve known for a long time that people lose cognitive(认知) abilities as they age,but now we’re beginning to understand that factors like KLOTHO can give people a boost in aging.Genetic variation in KLOTHO could help us predict brain health and find ways to protect people from the diseases that happen to us as we grow old, like Alzheimer’s disease(老年痴呆症),” said senior author,Dena Dubal of University of California.

The KLOTHO gene affects a protein found in the kidneys and the brain that regulates many different body processes.About one in five people carry a single copy of the variant, known as KL-VS,which boosts levels of the protein and is associated with a longer lifespan and improved heart and kidney function.A small minority,3% of the population, has two copies, which is linked to a shorter lifespan.

In the new study scientists scanned the brains of 422 men and women aged 53 and over who were also tested for the KLOTHO gene. They found that participants with a single copy of the gene variant also had a larger brain region known as RDLPFC,which is especially likely to shrink with age.Loss of neurons in this area may be one reason why older people are sometimes easily distracted and find it difficult to do more than one task at the same time.

Researcher Dr Jennifer Yokoyama said,“The brain region enhanced by genetic variation in KLOTHO is vulnerable(脆弱的)in aging and some mental disease. In this case, bigger size means better function. It will be important to determine whether the structure increase associated with carrying one copy of KL-VS can offset the cognitive(认知的)shortage caused by disease.”

People who have one copy of a variant KL-VS tend to live longer and have lower chances of suffering a stroke(中风),whereas people who have two copies may live shorter lives and have a higher risk of stroke.

【1】What can we learn from the second paragraph?

A.People’s cognitive abilities do not decline if people have KLOTHO.

B.With the clear understanding of KLOTHO,Alzheimer’s disease can be cured now.

C.Genetic variation in KLOTHO could be helpful in treating mental disease in elderly people.

D.Genetic variation in KLOTHO could lead people to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease.

【2】If a person carries two copies of the gene variant,he/she may .

A.have better kidney function

B.have a shorter lifespan

C.have a higher level of the protein in his/her body

D.suffer from some cognitive disease

【3】The reason why older people’s attention is easily distracted may be that .

A.they have fewer neurons in the RDLPEC

B.their brain region is too large

C.they have two copies of the gene variant

D.they have more neurons in the RDLPEC

【4】What does the underlined word “offset” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

A.Prevent. B.Balance.

C.Keep. D.Promote.

When the Japanese attacked America’s ships at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941,they did it secretly. The makers of the movie Pearl Harbor have behaved differently.

The noise about Pearl Harbor, made by Disney, has reached its highest point with its premiere(首次公演) before the movie opens in cinemas across the US at the start of the Memorial Day holiday weekend,a time to recall national heroes who sacrificed their lives on the battlefield.

As Ben Affleck is the main star, the movie seems sure to become a success in the United States at least.

At almost three hours in length,it promises to be a good old Hollywood movie. There is a love story.Affleck and his co-star,Josh Hartnett, both fall in love with the navy nurse,Kate Beckinsale and,of course, there is much human courage and love of country.

It’s certain that Disney will be accused of “changing” history. The showing of actual events in a movie always causes arguments.

Bits of the story are deliberately not mentioned in the movie. It does not address the theory held by some historians that President Franklin Roosevelt knew about Japan’s intention to attack the ships in Pearl Harbor. It is said he did nothing,as he was aware that such a blow would allow him to take America into the Second World War.

Japan remains sensitive about being accused of wartime atrocities(暴行).And Disney is sensitive about its business in Japan, where it has a theme park.

Not all the reviews of the movie have been full of praise.A reviewer for Newsweek, who was given an early preview, acknowledged that the 40-minute sequence(连续镜头) showing the attack itself was powerful. The attack comes quite late in the movie, however, and the reviewer was less impressed with the characters and the love story.

“Almost every line of the dialogue sounds like it comes from an old movie,” the reviewer wrote.

Every spring Beijing is choked by huge sandstorms. The sky turns a strange and frightening yellow colour as clouds of sand sweep down from the deserts of Mongolia and north-western China.Strong winds blow up the dust and cover everything in sight—in 2006,a storm dumped 330,000 tonnes of dust on Beijing in one night.

The number of sandstorms has grown alarmingly over the years as the deserts have expanded. This is partly man-made and partly because of climate(气候).Many grasslands have been overgrazed(过度放牧)by sheep and goats,or ploughed up,leaving the soil dangerously exposed.Too much water has been taken out of rivers, and the situation is made worse by increasingly long-lasting droughts that have affected the northern half of China as the climate grows warmer and drier. The result is probably the worst loss of rich land to deserts in the world and a dust bowl of extremely large proportions. The nearest sand dunes to Beijing are now only 70 km away and drifting closer each year.At this rate, the desert will reach the city by 2040,and Beijing could become the world’s first modern city to disappear under sand.To hold back the deserts,a huge programme of forest planting called the Great Green Wall has been under way for over 30 years. The barrier(隔离带)is planned to be 4,500 km long when completed in several decades(十年),but the drought is having a very bad effect on the trees and the deserts carry on growing.

【1】All the following are the reasons for the expansion of the deserts EXCEPT .

A.the soil of the grasslands is exposed

B.too much span>water in rivers has been used

C.it doesn’t rain for a long time

D.the climate in northern China is colder and drier

【2】At what speed do the nearest sand dunes move towards Beijing according to the passage?

A.More than 15 km a year.

B.More than 2 km a month.

C.More than 2 km a year.

D.More than 15 km a month.

【3】What is the purpose of the huge programme“the Great Green Wall”?

A.To protect the Great Wall.

B.To plant as many trees as possible along the Great Wall.

C.To stop the deserts from moving towards Beijing.

D.To plant as many trees as possible in Beijing.

【4】In which section can this passage most likely be found in a newspaper?
