题目内容

After 21 years of marriage, I discovered a new way of keeping the spark (火花) of love alive. I started to go out with another woman. It was really my wife’s    26  .

My mother is the type of woman who    32   that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news. “I thought that it would be    33   to pass some time with you,” I responded. “Just the    34   of us.” She thought about it for a moment, then said, “I would like that very much.”
We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and    35  . My mother took my arm    36   she were the First Lady. Much more so than I could have imagined,” I answered.
A few days later my mother    42   a massive heart attack. It happened so suddenly that I didn’t have a chance to do    43   for her. At that moment I    44   the importance of saying in time “I LOVE YOU” and giving our loved ones the time that they    45  .

One day when I was driving on the freeway, I noticed all the way there were large dividing walls, which had been built between it and the road running parallel to it, for noise reduction (减少) and a sense of separation. The purpose was to create a sense of privacy (隐私) for people on the other side.
This got me thinking: How often do we put up mental barriers that keep us distant from others? Lifting the artificial barriers that keep us apart can offer opportunities to express our goodwill and create better relationships. If we can do like this, maybe our life will be a little different.
There is a little post office in a nearby town, and since it is closer to me than the post office in my own town, I go there. One day, with many people jammed into the little building, a man came hurrying in to mail a letter, and the girl at the counter saw he had too little postage on it. She told him he needed 2 more cents. Obviously he was a little at a loss. He had hurried over from his office, and didn’t have any money on him or time to stand in line. He was going to run back to get the needed money and wait in line again, but he hurried to get the letter mailed in the first place.
As we were watching him, one woman volunteered a two-cent stamp, and the whole line became very quiet. It was a beautiful moment. The man hesitated for a little while and asked her if she was sure, and she assured him she was fine with giving him the stamp. He offered to go back to his office to get the two cents, and she told him not to bother.
It was a small thing, but it meant something to both of the people involved, and to the rest of us. We aren’t a yard that needs defining or a freeway that needs barriers. We are human beings who can contribute to each other’s wellbeing by taking time to pay attention and interact. After all, we are all parts of a whole living in society.

In the doorway of my home, I looked closely at my 23-year-old son, Daniel. In a few hours he would be flying to France to   36  a different life. It was a transitional(过渡的)time in Daniel's life. I wanted to    37  him some words of significance. But nothing came from my lips, and this was not the    38  time I had let such moments pass.
When Daniel was five, I took him to the bus stop on his first day of kindergarten. He asked, “What is it going to be like, Dad? Can I do it?” Then he walked   39  the steps of the bus and disappeared inside. The bus drove away and I said nothing. A decade later, a similar   40 played itself out. I drove him to college. As I started to leave, I tried to think of something to say to give him    41 and confidence as he started this new stage of life. Again, words 42  me.
Now, as I stood before him, I thought of those 43  opportunities. How many times have I let such moments   44 ? I don't find a quiet moment to tell him what they have  45  to me. Or what he might   46  to face in the years ahead. Maybe I thought it was not necessary to say anything.
What does it matter in the course of a lifetime if a father never tells a son what he really thinks of him?    47  as I stood before Daniel, I knew that it did matter. My father and I loved each other. Yet, I always   48  never hearing him put his   49   into words. Now I could feel my palms sweat and my throat tighten. Why is it so   50  to tell a son something from the heart?
My mouth turned dry, and I knew I would be able to get out only a few words clearly. “Daniel,” I said, “If I could have picked, I would have picked you.” That's all I could say. He hugged me. For a moment, the world    51 , and there were just Daniel and me. He was saying something, but tears misted my eyes, and I couldn't understand what he was saying. All I was    52  of was the stubble(短须)on his chin as his face pressed   53  mine. What I had said to Daniel was   54 . It was nothing. And yet, it was  55 .

In a world where comparisons happen non-stop, it is difficult to look outside yourself and to ever be   46  with who you are. There’s always someone who’s a bit   47 . The only solution is to reach   48  and measure against what Warren Buffett calls your own inner yardstick. There is no more   49  measure for comparison than who your were yesterday, last week or last decade, when you were at your   50 .
Nothing useful ever comes from comparison to others. Either you see yourself as better than someone and you get   51 , or you see someone else as better than you and you feel like all your hard work is for   52 . It is a fool’s game. Not one of us is exactly   53 . The only direct and honest comparison is   54  yourself. Everything else is apples to oranges.
My opinion is that you are only   55  to compare yourself to someone else if their life  56  is the same as your own. Good luck finding that   57 . And one thing is for sure. No matter how hard you work and how dedicated(埋头苦干的)you are, there will always be someone who can run a little faster, jump a little higher, score a little better or look a little nicer in a swimsuit. And if there’s not, you can   58  someone is coming up fast   59  you. So how can you always win in life? Become your best   60 .
Having an image of your most recent past limits is the perfect thing to   61  you to the next level. If you ran 7 flights of stairs yesterday, then do 8 today. Who  62  if the guy next to you did 15? It doesn’t make a bit of   63 . You are a more  64  person today than you were yesterday. Your own   65  is all you need.

All my life I had loved airports. To me,they were fl kind of magic gateway to the world, but today it seemed like a cold and heartless place.
“Well, here we are,the airport,"my sister said with fl sigh.As 1 watched her unload my luggage,I could see the sadness in her eyes. One last hug and a final good-bye and I would be on my way to a new lire abroad, leaving my beloved sister behind.
I looked at my sister and even though her eyes were filled with tears, she was trying to keep a brave face.“You’d better go or you’ll miss your flight,”she said.
“I am just going to walk away and not look back,” I said. As I held her one last time she whispered,“Don’t worry about me,I’ll be fine."“I’ll miss you,” I replied with tears in my eyes.As I promised,I did not look back。but 1 was sobbing. To me it was the end of the world.
While boarding the plane 1 was still crying.I did not have the energy to put my bag in the overhead locker, so I put it on the empty seat next to mine.As I settled into my chair, a feeling of sadness overwhelmed(淹没) me.I felt like my best friend had just been taken away from me.
The plane shook heavily and the bag fell, with some stuff spreading on the floor. When I bent over to gather the things up,I saw an unfamiliar little book in the middle of my belongings. It was not until I picked it up that I realized that it was a diary.
Immediately I recognized my sister’s handwriting.“Hi,Sis,What a day it has been today.First you let me know that you are moving abroad and then my boss…”My sister had been keeping a diary for the past month and she was now passing it on to me.I was to write in it for the next couple of months and then send it back to her.Even though a large ocean separated us,at some point it felt like she was actually there.
