Do you know America's most famous woman is the Goddess of Liberty, i. e., the Statue of Liberty? It was conceived(想象,构思) in 1865 by Edouard de Laboulaye and designed by another Frenchman, Frederie Bartoldi. They wanted to honour liberty and friendship.

It was hoped that the monument would be completed by 1876 when America celebrated its centennial(百年庆典). Fund raising and manufacture of the statue in France went slowly. It was 1885 when the 214 crates(板条箱) containing the statue reached New York.

Americans were initially(起初) embarrassed(为难) for they had not raised the money to pay for the building of the base. Fund raising by popular subscription(捐款) was behind schedule. One fund raising method used was to have popular Americans write letters which were then auctioned off(拍卖). Mark Twain wrote a “tongue-in-cheek” letter suggesting that Miss Liberty didn't deserve a statue.

The base and statue, together 272 feet tall, were completed, in 1886. From a technical standpoint, the statue is a marvel(奇迹). The inner structure was designed by the French engineer, Alexander Eiffel. His design for the stressed copper(铜) skin of the statue anticipated(超前) many of the principles(主椽) used in modern aircraft.

After a century, the monument began to show signs of deterioration(变坏). Just as Frenchmen had created the Statue, so it was with renovation(更新). A Frenchman noted the decay and French and American craftsmen and contributions brought about the renewal(更新) of the Statue in time for its centennial. Liberty is still popular in France and the United States.

New band rocks

Imagine what you will be doing in seven years. Are you getting your first job or just studying in another country?

When the Taiwan band Relax One(轻松玩)was formed in 1998, they wanted to release their own albums. And now they have.

When the four group members came to the mainland to promote their first album “I Want Relax One”, they told Teens how they made their dream come true.

Guitarist Xiaomao set up his own music studio when he was only 17 after he graduated from Danjiang High School. This is the same high school from which other stars graduated, including Jay Chou and Monster from Mayday.

“It doesn’t mean you are a loser simply because you don’t like school,” Xiaomao believed. He had a good time hanging around with music lovers. Then he met drummer A-kui, who was rather rebellious at that time.

Both A-kui’s parents are high school teachers.Born in such a family meant few choices for him-going to a good university and finding a decent(体面的)job seemed to be his future.A-kui was already on that road, being a top student in one of the top high schools in Taiwan.

“But I didn’t want to be planned, ” said A-kui.He took up drumming. The reason that he didn’t choose guitar or bass was simply that they were too costly.

“To learn to play drums, all you need is a pair of drumsticks, ” A-kui said with a smile.“My family didn’t want me to do music so I didn’t have the money to buy a guitar.”

Xiaorenguo was A-kui’s fellow student in Alethia University, majoring in information management.Being infected by A-kui’s enthusiasm for music, he began playing bass(贝司).

They formed a band.Parents’ objections, financial pressure and changing of band members-nothing stopped their dream.

And then lead vocalist(主唱)Summer, who now writes all the songs, joined in 1998.

Summer loved singing when she was a kid. After graduating from Fu Jen University, she began her exploration of music.

Her voice and talent for writing songs were acknowledged(得到承认)before she joined the band. She had written songs for other singers, such as China Dolls(中国娃娃).Some producers even tried to persuade her to develop a career on her own.

But Summer insisted on staying with the band.“We are like a family, ” Summer explained.

Early in the morning of June 29, 1991, Carrie and Morgenstern were watching the field. Although they could see nothing through the thick fog, they kept their camera running.

By 6 a.m. the fog began to lift. A remarkable pair of circles had been flattened. Stalks (主茎) were bent but not broken. Outside the circles the wheat was untouched. Muddy though the field was, there were no footprints or other marks. The circles seemed to have come from nowhere. “ I can’t explain it at all ,” Mike Carrier said to himself with his eyes wide open.

Carrier is not alone since the early 1980s, more than 2000 circles have appeared in farmer’s fields. Most circles form at night between May and August.

Some believe the circles are caused by deer or some other animals. Others think of UFOs. “The circles are messages given by those who come from outer space,” says Michael Green. “Perhaps they are trying to get in touch with us.”

Pat Delgado has done research on crop circles since 1981. He believes that they are caused by “ some form of earth energy.”

Most scientists think that there’s no scientific basis to back up Green’s or Delgado’s theories. Some of them say, “ We think they’re nothing but hoax(骗局).”

In September 1991, Doug Bower and Dave Chorley told newsmen that since 1979 they had made circles throughout southern England to fool people who believed in UFOs.

Since the early 1980s, Dr. Terence Meaden has visited more than1000 circles. Now he thinks he may have the answer. He believes true crop circles are made by vortex(旋风) which can flatten the crop in circular patterns.

Now crop circles are still found in southern England each summer. Are they really the traces of UFOs?
