11.I was at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Bambolim,Goa,in the 1980s.On Inspection Day one year,an officer and his team from the Board of Education were coming to see how our school was run.As usual, our teachers asked us to be prepared.
At the end of the day,Mrs Sushila Tyaji, our Hindi teacher, walked in and told us that the inspector had come and qu ietly observed the class from the back door.He had also left an adverse remark! That was sad for us.Would we now be punished for having failed our teachers? There were no answers from Mrs Tyaji.Instead, she wrote the Hindi word"dukh"on the blackboard. And then she did something I have never seen a teacher do in my entire school life. She apologized.
"I am sorry for having taught you something wrong,"she said."I missed out the dots between the letters‘du'and‘kh'.The inspector told me this in the staffroom.I hope you will not make this mistake in future."
That admission had a significant effect on me.If our teacher can say sorry to us when she is wrong, why can't I?The incident helped me get rid of two common vices-ego and dishonesty.
Twenty-three years passed.I had to let my teacher know what that lesson meant to me.I recently located Mrs Sushila Tyaji using the Internet and went to meet her with my husband.
She smiled when she heard my story of how her small decades-old apology had transformed me for good."It's tough being a teacher. But every once in a while, when an old student comes along and tells us that we did something right,it makes up for everything else,"she said.

That was sad for us. I am sorry for having taught you something wrong,"she said."I missed out the dots between the letters‘du'and‘kh'.The inspector told me this in the staffroom.I hope you will not make this mistake in future."
The incident helped me get rid of two common vices-ego and dishonesty. 故A正确.
7.B. She smiled when she heard my story of how her small decades-old apology had transformed me for good.

2.When people think of improving their diet,they often talk about eating more fruits and vegetables.Others want to eat more fish and less red meat,in addition to reducing the amount of food they eat.But,they can improve their diets even more with just a simple addition.American researchers have found that a diet rich in spices can help reduce the harmful effects of eating high fat meals.
Pennsylvania State University Associate Professor Shiela West led an investigation of the health effects of a spice-rich diet.Her team knew that a high-fat meal produces high levels of triglycerides(甘油三脂),a kind of fat,in the blood.She said,"If this happens too frequently,or if triglyceride levels are raised too much,your risk of heart disease is increased."
As part of the study,her team prepared meals on two separate days for six men between the ages of 30and 65.The men were overweight,but healthy.The researchers added about 30milliliters of spices to each serving of the test meal,which included chicken curry,Italian herb bread and a cinnamon(肉桂树皮)biscuit.The meal for the control group was the same,but it did not include any spices.
During the experiment,the researchers removed blood from the men every 30minutes for three hours.They found that antioxidant activity(抗氧化活性) in the blood of the men who ate the spicy meal was 13percent higher than it was for the men who did not.In addition,insulin(胰岛素) activity dropped by about 20percent in the men who ate the spicy food.
Shiela West says many scientists think that oxidative stress leads to heart disease.And what exactly is oxidative stress?Think of an apple that has been cut in half and set aside for half an hour or so.The cut side of the apple turns brown.That is a simple explanation of what happens when oxidative stress comes in contact with the inside and outside of our bodies.
Professor West says,"Antioxidants,like spices,may be important in reducing oxidative stress and thus reducing the risk of chronic disease."She adds that the level of spices used in the study provided the same amount of antioxidants found in 150milliliters of red wine or about 38grams of dark chocolate.

When Tu joined the national research team to find the medicine (65)that/which could fight against malaria in the 1960s and 1970s,things were hard.The team didn't have advanced equipment back then.Tu used to test (66)medicines(medicine) by eating them herself.Her team searched old Chinese medicine books by hand and tested over 2,000traditional recipes.
Once Tu returned home after traveling for six months.Her little daughter(67)hid(hide) from the"strange woman".To do research,Tu also had to move around a lot.
Finally,Tu found artemisinin(青蒿素)in sweet wormwood in 1971.She spent the next decades (68)trying(try) to improve the medicine.According to World Health Organization,about 200million people suffer  (69)from malaria around the world,and about haft a million die each year.Artemisinin is the most effective treatment against malaria known today.
Tu never complains about (70)how hard she works."I feel more rewarded when I see so many cured patients,"she said.
16.Whether we're 2 years old or 62,our reasons for lying are mostly the same:to get out of trouble, for personal gain and to make ourselves look better in the eyes of others. But a growing body of research is raising questions about how a child's lie is different from an adult's lie,and how the way we deceive changes as we grow.
"Parents and teachers who catch their children lying should not be alarmed.Their children are not going to turn out to be abnormal liars,"says Dr.Lee,a director of the Institute of Child Study. The fact that children tell lies is a sign that they have reached a new developmental stage.Dr.Lee conducted a series of studies in which they bring children into a lab with hidden cameras.Children and young adults aged 2 to 17 are likely to lie while being told not to look at a toy, which is put behind the child's back.
For young kids, the desire to cheat is big and 90% take a secret look in these experiments. When the test-giver returns to the room, the child is asked if he or she looked secretly. At age 2,about a quarter of children will lie and say they didn't.By 3,half of kids will lie,and by 4,that figure is 90%,studies show.
Researchers have found that it's kids with better understanding abilities who lie more. That's because to lie you also have to keep the truth in mind, which includes many brain processes, such as combining several sources of information and faking that information. The ability to lie-and lie successfully-is thought to be related to developme nt of brain regions that allow so called"executive functioning",or higher order thinking and reasoning abilities.Kids who perform better on tests that involve executive functioning also lie more.
