During this summer vacation, Li Lei went to teach in a small but poor village with others volunteers. When he arrived, he found the people here lived a hard life and all the children crowded in a small room. He was glad that the children are lovely and friendly. Though he only had something simply to eat, he was used to the hard life soon. During breaks, he often played games with his students. At a night, he was busy preparing lesson and checking his students¡¯ homework. Realize the importance of education, he has made up his mind to becoming a teacher after he graduates from the university

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿Doctor Seuss was born in 1904. By the middle 1950s, he had become one of the best-loved and most successful children's book writers in the world. His books are very popular with young readers. They enjoy the invented words and the pictures of unusual funny animals and plants.

In 1954, life magazine published(¿¯µÇ) a report about school children who could not read. The report said many children's books were not interesting. Doctor Seuss strongly hoped to help children and decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read. He used words with the same ending sound, like fish and wish. He did not receive training in art. Yet, he drew the pictures for most of his books.

In 1957, Dr. Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat. He used less than 230 words to write the book and even a six-year-old should be able to read it. It was a fun story and easy to read. Children loved it. Their parents loved it, too. Today it is still one of the stories they like best. The success of The Cat in the Hat made him want to write more books for children. In 1960, he wrote a book using less than fifty words. The book is called Green Eggs and Ham.

In 1984, Doctor Seuss won a Pulitzer Prize (ÆÕÀû²ß½±). He was honored for the education and enjoyment his books provided American children and their parents.

He died at the age of 87, but his influence remains. Millions of his books have been sold worldwide. People say his books helped change the way American children learned to read. ¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿Dear Daddy,

You¡¯ve been gone for six years and I¡¯ve had time to think. Now I¡¯m ready to write this letter to you.

For a long time after Mom died, I thought I liked her more because I didn¡¯t like your attitude and I thought that her softer side was more desirable. In my 15-year-old¡¯s mind, I thought you could have stopped my mother from drinking herself to death. Instead, you were off playing tennis and working. Later, I realized that no one could make someone stop drinking. Support is important, but at the end of the day, it is a choice. You were just doing your best.

What I have learned is that I am much like you. You taught me self-confidence. I know if I am prepared to work hard enough for something, I will be successful. This is no small thing. What I¡¯ve realized since you died is that you were always there for me. You fought to ensure that I got my place on the Quebec badminton team that I had earned. When I got divorced (Àë»é), you came up to see if I had what I needed to take care of the boys and you paid off my car.

You taught me not to spend money I don¡¯t have. I¡¯ve always kept to that rule. It has served me well. We always had a good home to live in, nice vacations, and everything we needed and most of what we wanted.

You were not a perfect parent and neither am I. My children are much more thankful than I ever was. I am thankful that I had you as my dad. I am still Daddy¡¯s girl and I am proud of it.

Learn to Think

¡°I will think of it.¡± It is easy to say this. ¡¾1¡¿________________ We can not see our thoughts, or hear, or taste, or feel them; and yet what mighty power they have!

Sir Isac Newton was seated in his garden on a summer¡¯s evening, when he saw an apple fell from a tree. ¡¾2¡¿______________ Later, he discovered how the earth, sun, moon, and stars were kept in their places.

¡¾3¡¿____________ He began to think; he wanted to find out why the steam in the kettle moved the heavy lid. From that time he went on thinking and thinking. When he became a man, he improved the steam engine so much that it could, with the greatest ease, go the work of many horses.

¡¾4¡¿_______________

A man named Galileo was once standing in the cathedral of Pisa, when he saw a light swaying to and fro. This set him thinking, and it led to the invention of the pendulum.

Boys, when you have a difficult lesson to learn, don¡¯t feel discouraged, and help yourselves before asking someone to help you. ¡¾5¡¿_______________

A. But do you know what great things have come from thinking?

B. Think, and by thinking you will learn how to think to some purpose.

C. A boy named James Watt sat quietly by the fireside, watching the lid of the tea kettle as it moved up and down.

D. And do you know how to think?

E. When you see a steamboat, a steam mill, remember that it would never have been built of it had not been for the hard thinking of someone.

F. He began to think, trying to find out why the apple fell.

G. He was a famous physicist and good at thinking.
