【题目】Recordings of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study says. Beehives (蜂窝)-either recorded or real-may even prevent elephants from damaging farmer's crops.

In 2002, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them. Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might discourage elephants from eating crops. But before she asked farmer to go to the trouble of setting up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would scare elephants away.

Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life. Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down. NextLucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya and put a speaker in a close to each family.

From a distance, Lucy switched on the pre-recorded sound of angry bees while at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera. Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds. Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group ignored the sound of the angry bees. Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy Played the sound of a waterfall (瀑布) instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed. Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place.

Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several times. She hasn't tested enough groups yet to know, but her initial (最初的) results were promising enough to begin trials with farmers. She has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away.

1As mentioned in the passage, Lucy

A. works by herself in Africa

B. needs to test more elephant groups

C. has stopped elephants eating crops

2Why did Lucy throw a stone into a wild beehive?

A. To record the sound of bees.

B. To make a video of elephants.

C. To see if elephants would run away.

D. To find out more about the behavior of bees.

3Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. Young elephants ignore African honeybees.

B. Waterfalls can make elephants stay in one place.

C. Elephants do not go near trees with bees living in them.

D. Farmers do not allow Lucy to conduct tests in their fields.

【题目】Telepathy: Mind-to-mind Contact

Telepathy is the ability to communicate without the use of the five senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste). Its an instinct (本能) which can be woken up in times of emergency or need. When we feel that something is happening or about to happen by instinct, we’re using resources within the unconscious mind. When the resources of two persons’ unconscious minds link together into the same frequency, we call it Telepathy.

We can either send or receive Telepathy. If you know who is calling before you answer the ringing phone, you are probably a good receiver. If you think of a person and he/she calls you, you are most likely to be better at sending.

You can easily put your abilities to the test. Think of somebody and will him or her to contact you. Be patient. The other person may not be a good receiver, but they should contact you much earlier than would normally be expected. Or whenever the phones rings, but try “feeling” who is contacting you. Don’t guess, but try to feel it with your mind. However, if neither of these work for you, that doesn’t mean that you have no ability of telepathy. As mentioned earlier, telepathy is most likely to turn up in case of emergency.

Telepathy dreams often contain telepathic messages. Two people may both dream of the other and find that their dreams had a clear connection. These people are probably linking to each other’s unconscious mind.

Telepathy & Relationships. The more people spend time together, the more likely they are to be able to link up to the other’s mind, especially when separated. There are two reasons for this. One is that they understand the other’s mind through time spent together; the other is that there is usually a strong desire to communicate. A mother will often sense that her child is in danger. This is due to the child’s eagerly wanting his or her mother, knowing that this person who would always want to be there for them, and the mother’s deep desire to protect her child from harm.

1Telepathy turns up when we ____.

A. think of a stranger

B. use the five senses together

C. recall things from our memory

D. sense a close friend in danger

2Youre better at sending than receiving Telepathy if you ____.

A. can tell who knocks at your door

B. can feel your mom is in danger

C. receive a friend’s call as you wish

D. dream of a friend dreaming of you

3Which is not the way to help people gain Telepathy?

A. Help them have a strong desire to communicate.

B. Separate them all the time.

C. Help them link up their unconscious minds.

D. Let them spend much time together.

【题目】If you get into the forest with your friends, stay with them always. If you don’t, you may get lost. If you really get lost, this is what you should do. Sit down and stay where you are. Don’t try to find your friends—let them find you by staying in one place.

There is another way to help your friends or other nearby people to find you. Give them a signal (信号) by shouting or whistling (吹口哨) three times. Any signal given three times is a call for help.

Keep up shouting or whistling always three times together. When people hear you, they will know that you are not just making noise for fun. They will let you know that they have heard your signal. They give you two shouts, two whistles, or two gun-shots (枪声). When someone gives you a signal, it is an answer to a call for help.

If you don’t think that you will get help before night comes, try to make a little house---cover up to the holes with branches (树枝) with lots of leaves. Make yourself a soft bed with leaves and grass.

What should you do if you get hungry or need drinking water? You would have to leave your little house to look for a river. Don’t just walk away. Pick off small branches and drop them as you walk so that you can find your way back. The most important thing to do when you are lost is—stay in one place.

【题目】In American high schools, there is a tradition for each year's graduating class( called the seniors) to play a joke on the schoolthe Senior Prank(毕业恶作剧).

This usually happens at the end of the school year just before the seniors graduate from the school. It is an unofficial tradition. Al-though the schools don't encourage it, each year the seniors try to make their pranks the most original so that their class will be remembered in the years to come. The joke is supposed to be light-hearted(无伤大雅的)and must not do major damage to the school property .

The best prank at my high school was done several years ago. A flower called the golden poppy(金罂粟花)is the state flower of California ; the state law states that no one can cut them down once they are planted.

The seniors at my school took advantage of the law. They planted golden poppies all over the football field one night, spelling out their graduation year with the flowers ! Since the school couldn't break the law to cut down the poppies, they had to wait until the flowers died.

The greatest prank that I've ever heard was done by one of my history teachers when he was in high school. He and some of his close friends went fishing in hopes of catching big fish for their prank. They were lucky and caught a three-foot shark.

My teacher and his friends took the shark to the school at night and dumped it into the swimming pool. The next morning when students went swimming, they found a dead shark in their pool. The chlorine()in the water had killed the shark ! My history teacher always regretted that his school had put so much chlorine in the pool, or it would have been more fun if the shark was still alive the next day.

The schools won't take it seriously if the pranks don't cause too much damage. But, sometimes the school will punish the seniors for going too far with their prank. My teacher's “Shark Prank “is an example of a prank gone too far. The school had to drain (排水)the pool and have it cleaned before filling it up again, which had cost the school several thousand dollars.

【1】 The underlined word “property “means _________.

【2】 The author implies (暗示)_________.

A. the schools encourage the seniors to play the prank

B. his history teacher was punished by the school

C. the law of California doesn't allow planting the golden poppy in the campus

D. after finding a shark in the swimming pool, the school killed it with the chlorine

【3】 We can infer(推断)from the passage that _________.

A. the “Golden Poppy Prank “is successful and well-meaning

B. the Senior Prank is an unofficial tradition

C. the school had to cut down the golden poppies at last

D. the golden poppy is the state flower of California

【4】 Which of the following is not mentioned in the passage?

A. Only the graduating class can play the Senior Prank.

B. The schools don't encourage the Senior Prank.

C. The “Golden Poppy Prank " cost the school a lot of money.

D. The “Shark Prank “is beyond the general pranks.

【题目】According to body language expert Robert Phipps, the way people sleep at night actually determines a lot about the type of personality they have. Phipps has identified four sleeping positions that affect personality.

Phipps found that worriers, those who stress the most, tend to sleep in the fetal(胎儿的) position. He found that this is the most common bedtime position, with nearly 58 percent of people sleeping on their side with knees up and head down. The more we curl up(蜷曲), the more comfort we are seeking, according to Phipps.

The second most common position is the log. Sleeping with a straight body, with arms at each side, as if they are standing guard at Buckingham Palace, indicates stubbornness, and these people (the 28 percent who sleep this way) often wake up stiffer than when they went to sleep.

"The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking is and you can become inflexible, which means you make things harder for yourself," according to Phipps.

Yearner(向往型) sleepers are next on the list. About 25 percent of people sleep in this style — on their side with arms stretched out in front, looking as if they are either chasing a dream or perhaps being chased themselves. Yearners are typically their own worst critics, always expecting the best results, explained Phipps. These people often wake up refreshed and eager to face the challenges of the day ahead.

Perhaps the most peculiar(奇怪的) of sleep styles is the freefaller position. This sleep style makes up 17 percent of the population. They sleep face down with arms stretched out. These people, according to Phipps, feel like they have little control over their life. Not only is this the strangest of sleep styles, but also the least comfortable, and people may wake up feeling tired and have no energy.

In conclusion, Phipps has only one more thing to add: "A good night’s sleep sets you up for the following day and our sleeping positions can determine how we feel when we wake."

The underlined word "rigid" is closest in meaning to " ".

A. stubborn B. flexible C. comfortable D. strange

【题目】From the health point of view we are living in a wonderful age. A large number of once fatal illnesses can now be cured by modern drugs and surgery. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the incredible killing of people on the roads. Man is opposite to the motor-car! It is a never ending battle which man is losing. Thousands of people are killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen.

It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering-wheel(方向盘) , his car becomes the extension of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man's worst qualities. People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel. They are rude, ill-mannered and aggressive. All their hidden frustrations and disappointments seem to be brought to the surface by the act of driving.

The surprising thing is that society smiles on the motorist and seems to forgive the behaviour. Everything is done for his convenience. Cities and towns are made ugly by huge car parks.

It is high time a world law were created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are not strict and even the strictest are not strict enough. A law which was universally accepted could only have a beneficial effect on the accident rate. Here are a few examples of some things that might be done. The driving test should be made to a fixed standard and far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years or so; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised to at least 21 ; all vehicles should be put through strict annual tests for safety. Present drinking and driving laws (where they exist) should be mad much stricter. Driving speed should be limited on all roads. These measures may sound extremely severe. But surely nothing should be considered difficult if it results in reducing the annual toll of human life. After all, the world is for human beings, not motor-cars.

The main idea of this passage is______.

A. traffic accidents are mainly caused by motorists

B. thousands of people in the world are killed each year

C. only stricter traffic laws can prevent accidents

D. the laws of some countries about driving are too strict
