I was not good in math in the first year of junior high school. Having been failed so many times in math exams, I was anxious about the subject. Every time I tried hardly to work out a math problem, I was afraid of making mistakes, that really made me feel helpless. Unluckily, I met a math teacher in the second year. She told me that I didn¡¯t need to worry about making mistakes, because I could find out my shortcomings through my mistake. She always encouraged me to try again whenever I make a mistake. Thanks to my teacher¡¯s encouragement, I became interesting in math and made rapid progresses. My experience proves that failure is the mother of success and we can learn a lot from our mistakes.

Maddie Messe, 13, has always loved Temple Run, a mobile game that sends her racing through swamps (ÕÓÔó) and forests to outrun a pack of crazed monkeys. What she didn¡¯t love was being forced to play as a boy ¡ª unless she was willing to buy a female version. ¡°I felt like l was being cheated or misrepresented,¡± Maddie explains£®¡°Girls are just as capable (ÓÐÄÜÁ¦µÄ) of running away from monkeys as boys are.¡±

So last winter, Maddie researched 50 of the most popular iPhone games. What she found was infuriating£º90 percent offered free male characters, but only 15 percent let you play as a female for free.

Armed with those statistics, Maddie drafted a spirited article and fired it off to several major newspapers. The Washington Post agreed to run the piece, which attracted millions of readers around the globe ¡ª including the makers of Temple Run! ¡°We realized she had a point,¡± says Natalia Luckyanova, the game¡¯s co-creator. ¡°It was the kick in the pants we needed to say,¡®We should fix it£®¡¯So we did.¡±

Now you can play Temple Run with a female character for free, but Maddie hopes her campaign inspires something deeper.¡°If you don¡¯t see characters that look like you on TV or in movies or games, speak up! Memory, they say, is a matter of practice and exercise. If you have the wish and really made a conscious£¨×Ô¾õµÄ£©effort, then you can quite easily improve your ability to remember things. But even if you are successful, there are times when your memory seems to play tricks on you.

Sometimes you remember things that really did not happen. One morning last week, for example, I got up and found that I had left the front door unlocked all night, yet I clearly remember locking it carefully the night before.

Memory ¡°trick¡± work the other way as well. Once in a while you remember not doing something, and then find out that you did. One day last month, for example, I was sitting in a barber£¨Àí·¢Ê¦£©shop waiting for my turn to get a haircut, and suddenly I realized that I had got a haircut two days before at the barber shop across the street from my office.

We always seem to find something funny and amusing£¨ÓÐȤµÄ£©in incidents caused by people¡¯s forgetfulness or absent-mindedness. I was on vacation, and in my mind, vacation does not mean setting my hotel room alarm clock for 6 am. But when you¡¯re in Aruba and hoping to reserve a beachside palapa£¨¼òª²ÝÅ, that¡¯s exactly what you do.

Tourists begin lining up at the crack of dawn to secure these umbrella-like wood structures that are covered with dried and woven palm leaves. They then place towels on chairs and call them theirs for the day, whether they remain there or not. I knew nothing of this beach code of ethics on my first day in Aruba. I saw an empty chair covered with a towel and took it. It was a big mistake.

For many visitors, a week bathing in the sun is the only activity they wish to pursue. It sounded good to my girlfriend, Barbara, and me after Boston¡¯s awful winter. Six more inches of snow was predicted on the day we left. The sun, the sand, and the beach seemed just about right.

Aruba¡¯s slogan is ¡°One Happy Island¡±, and it doesn¡¯t take long to understand why. Aruba is said to be on ¡°island time¡±. Translation: No one is in a rush to do anything. When in Aruba, you go with the flow, however slow and lazy that might be.

Cooling trade winds, white sandy beaches, turquoise£¨À¶ÂÌÉ«£©waters, and dazzling sunsets are all good reasons to visit. But this 20-mile island offers more than lazy days walking on the beach. There is amazing night life, casinos, golf, scuba diving£¨Ë®·ÎDZˮ£©, fine dining, shopping, and a great national park.

But our first day was spent as you¡¯d expect, swimming in the sea and enjoying cool drinks. Our drink of choice quickly became the Coco Loco. It¡¯s as refreshing as it sounds.

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self - conscious; that is, they are concerned with their own appearance and actions too much. Negative thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?

It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people unfavorably. A person¡¯s self- concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves and the way a person behaves affects other people¡¯s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a deep effect on all areas of their lives.

Shy people, who have low respect, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need faith that they are doing ¡°the right thing¡±. Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. It makes them feel inferior (×Ô±°).They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy person may respond to a praise with a statement like this one: ¡°You¡¯re just saying that to make me feel good, I know it¡¯s not true. ¡± It is clear that, while self- awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.

Can shyness be completely got rid of, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determination since shyness goes hand in hand with lack of self respect. It is important for people to accept their weakness as well as their strengths. Each one of us has his or her own characteristics. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and successful life.

A. the cause of shyness

A. harmful to people

B. a weak point of shy people

D. a healthy quality

3.What is the shy people¡¯s reaction to praise?

A. They are pleased by it.

B. They feel it is not true.

C. They are very sensitive to it.

D. They feel they are worthy of it.

4.We can learn from the passage that shyness can ______.

A. be overcome with determination

B. help us to live up to our full development

C. enable us to understand ourselves better

D. have nothing to do with lack of self respect

Are you a volcano lover? Here is a list of some of the world's most beautiful volcanoes that our travel agency can offer you to visit. Don't miss them!

Mount Mayon, the Philippines

Located about 450 km southeast of Manila on the island of Luzon, Mount Mayon is the most active volcano in the Philippines; a September 2014 eruption forced thousands to flee the area. Those who hike the volcano are rewarded with views of the towns in the Albay province and the Pacific Ocean. But even those who prefer the view from a distance have a historical good point at the Cagsawa Ruins, once an 18th Century Franciscan church that was destroyed by an 1814 eruption.

Kilauea and Marina Kea, Hawaii

Hawaii's volcanoes are known for their active eruptions and extraordinary scenes. Mauna Kea is around one million years old, while Kilauea is the youngest volcano in Hawaii and has been erupting continuously since 1983. The lava falls straight into the sea, creating fantastic forms of black rocks and smoke clouds.

Mount Kelimutu, Indonesia

Kelimutu's three mysterious crater lakes attract both scientists and tourists to the island of Flores in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province. One is emerald green, another dark red, and the third pitch black. Scientists say the lakes take on such colors because the volcanic gases met the lakes' minerals centuries ago.

1.People who hike Mount Mayon can enjoy the following EXCEPT ______.

C. views of the Cagsawa Ruins

D. views of Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province
