Tu,born in 1930,graduated from the Beijing Medical College in 1955.She is a chief researcher and professor at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine.She is also the first Chinese citizen to be awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine.In the 1970s,Tu carried out the research,resulting in the discovery of artemisinin(青蒿素),a drug that has considerably cut the number of malaria deaths and saved millions of lives.The treatment is based on a herb used in Chinese traditional medicine,called sweet wormwood.
Tu got the award for three"firsts".She was the first to bring artemisinin to her project team,the first to extract (提炼) a form of artemisinin that can altogether prevent malaria,and the first to complete a clinical trial,according to Zhang Boli,director of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences.
The committee said the discoveries had given the world powerful new ways to fight malaria which affects hundr eds of millions of people every year.The committee added that,"The results in terms of improved human health and reduced suffering are immeasurable."
