The significantwords found on an old key —"If I rest, I will rust"—would be an excellent motto for those who are tired of their slightest bit of idleness

Those who would attain the heights reached and kept by great men must keep their abilities polished by constant use, so that they may unlock the doors of knowledge, the gates that guard the entrance to the professions, to science, art, literature, or agriculture —- every department of human efforts.
Industry(勤奋) keeps bright the key that opens the treasury of achievement.
If Hugh Miller, after working hard all day in a mine, had devoted his evenings to rest and relaxation, he would never have become a famous geologist. The outstanding mathematician, Edmund Stone, would never have published a mathematical dictionary, never have found the key to the science of mathematics, if he had given his spare moments to idleness. Had the little Scottish boy, Ferguson, allowed his busy brain to go to sleep while he tended sheep on the hillside instead of calculating the positions of the stars by a string of beads, he would never have become a famous astronomer.

There have been many types of ecological disasters caused to the Australian ecosystem by
introducing other animals. The most famous one was the introduction of the rabbit. The rabbits
in Australia are mostly from a group of wild rabbits in south eastern Australia. These were released
in the hope of starting a business selling rabbits’ skin. This did actually happen, but there was nothing
to stop the rabbits spreading to the rest of mainland Australia. Now we have billions. They compete
with the native animals, damage the vegetation and severely reduce the potential carrying capacity of
the land for grass-eating animals like sheep and cattle.
As well as the disasters caused to the land ecosystem, there have been ones in the water. The most
obvious one was the deliberate introduction of European carp (欧洲鲤鱼) to the River Murray. The
carp were introduced to eat the weeds growing in the river. Now they have taken over much of the
river’s ecosystem and severely reduced the number of native fish.
Not all destructive introductions in Australia were of foreign species. There are several cases of native
Australian animals being taken to different places in Australia and causing destruction. Koalas were
introduced to Kangaroo Island and increased to such an extent that they are killing off the Manna Gum
trees.

No one can believe that the over 6,300-kilometre-long Great Wall might disappear some day. Believe it or not, the Great Wall is being destroyed by people. Less than 20% of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty is still perfect, but about 80% is in dander. The Great Wall can be called “great” mostly because of its amazing length. But we should realize that the length was made up of one brick at a time. If we do nothing to protect it, the Great Wall will become a series of separate wasteland rather than a historical site.

The Great Wall is actually a series of walls built and rebuilt by different dynasties over the past 2,000 years. It began in the rule of China’s first emperor, Qin Shihuang of the Qin Dynasty ,and lasted into the Ming Dynasty. The parts built before the Ming Dynasty have nearly disappeared. The bricks on the Great Wall were carried off by countryside people to build their houses, sheep corrals and pigsties. Some were taken away to build roads. Bricks carved with people’s names were put away as remembrances. Rubbish was spread over the battlements. The bricks can be sold for 15 yuan per tractor load. Those who destroyed and are destroying the Wall know its name, but are not clear about its cultural meaning. It will take a long time to let them know this. The local farmers not only carried of the Wall but also dug the entire base.
