Movie producers love the idea, partly because it’s so afraid and partly because it could really happen. The scene is this:An asteroid(小行星)is rushing toward Earth.A collision is unavoidable. When this happens, lots of people will die.

In the movies, a brave hero thinks of a clever plan to destroy the asteroid and save Earth. In real life, scientists have come up with more reasonable plans that might actually work if this situation comes up.

One way, say scientists and astronauts, is a 20 ton spacecraft called a gravitational tractor.First, the tractor, would move quickly up to the threatening asteroid and stop a short distance away.It would hang there, firing its thrusters just enough to fight the force of gravity between the spacecraft and the asteroid.

The tractor could then use its own gravity to pull the asteroid off course. It would take about a year for the spacecraft to draw an asteroid away from Earth’s path.

The question is that the spacecraft would have to arrive at the asteroid about 20 years before it hits Earth. It would be easier then to move the asteroid out of the way than it would be if the asteroid was near the Earth.

Still, the tractor idea is better than many ways proposed years ago for asteroid avoidance.Exploding asteroids, for example, wouldn’t work because the rocky bodies are too full of air.

Don’t spend too much time worrying about asteroids’ falling on your house, however. The chances of a collision happening in your lifetime are very small. If ________, though, scientists will do everything they can to keep you from getting hurt, sounds very heroic to me!

“Should there be separate classes for boys and girls? It might be a wise idea, because it is difficult to satisfy all tastes,”researchers at Leeds University in the UK last week said.

According to their report, in Britain, boys want science lessons to be about weapons of mass destruction and the effects of chemical weapons, while girls prefer to learn how to keep fit or the meanings of their dreams.

The study among 15-year-olds aimed to discover how science might be made more popular. The researchers, who contracted 1,200 English students, say“most did not like science as much as other subjects.”

The difference in results has curriculum(课程)planners considering separate classes for each sex.“The responses show a strong interest among boys in destructive technologies,”say the researchers.“while girls, by contrast, ________ their own bodies. They want to know how to deal with eating disorders, and they are interested in how to beat cancer and how to keep fit.”The differences make teaching a mixed-gender class a very difficult job.

There was, though, agreement on what boys and girl least want to learn. Both sexes were bored by the thought of studying the benefits and possible dangers of modern farming methods.Neither did they want to study“famous scientists and their lives”.

According to a weather expert's prediction, the atmosphere will be 3℃ warmer in the year 2050 than it is today, if man continues to burn fuels at the present rate.If this warming up took place, the ice caps in the poles would begin to melt, thus raising sea level several meters and severely flooding coastal cities.

In the past, concern about a man-made warming of the earth has concentrated on the Arctic because the Antarctic is much colder and has a much thicker ice sheet. But the weather experts are now paying more attention to West Antarctic. It may be affected by only a few degrees of warming.

Satellite pictures show that large areas of Antarctic ice are already disappearing. The evidence available suggests that a warming has taken place. This fits the theory that carbon dioxide warms the earth.

However, most of the fuel is burnt in the northern hemisphere, where temperatures seem to be falling.Scientists conclude, therefore, that up to now natural influences on the weather have exceeded those caused by man.The question is:Which natural cause has most effect on the weather?

One possibility is ________.Astronomers at one research station have studied the hot spots and“cold”spots on the sun.As the sun rotates(旋转),it presents hotter or“colder”faces to the earth, and different aspects to different parts of the earth. This seems to have a considerable effect on the distribution of the earth's atmospheric pressure, and consequently on wind circulation. The sun is also variable over a long term:its heat output goes up and down in cycles, the latest trend being downward.

The interview has been going on for about 20 minutes and everything seems to be going well. Then, suddenly, the interviewer asks an expected question,“Which is not important, law or love?”

Job applicants increasingly find themselves asked strange questions like this. And the signs are that this is beginning to happen in China.Employers want people who are skilled, enthusiastic and devoted. So these are qualities that reasonable intelligent job applicant will try to show no matter what his or her actual feelings are.

In response, employers are increasingly using questions that can try and show the applicants' true personality. The question in the first paragraph comes from a test called the Kiersey Personality Sorter. It is an attempt to discover how people solve problems, ________ This is often called aptitude(智能)testing.

According to Mark Baldwin of Alliance many job applicants in China are finding this type of questions difficult. When a Chinese person fills out an aptitude test he or she will think there is a right answer and they may well fail because they try to guess what the examiner wants to see.

This is sometimes called the prisoner's dilemma(窘境).Applicants are trying to act cleverly in their own interest. But they fail because they don't understand what the interviewer is looking for.Remember that in an aptitude test, the correct answer is always the honest answer.
