题目内容
Books which give instructions on how to do things are very popular in the United States today. Thousands of these "How to" books are available; in fact, there are about four thousand books with titles that begin with the words "How to" One book may tell you how to earn more money, another may tell you how to save or spend it, and another may explain how to give your money away. Many "How to" books give advice on careers (职业). They tell you how to choose a career and how to succeed at it. If you fail, however, you can buy a book called “How to Turn Failure into Success”. If you would like to become very rich, you can buy the book “How to Make a Million”. If you never make any money at all, you may need a book called "How to" Live on Nothing? One of the most popular types of books is one that helps you with personal problems. If you want to have a better love of life, you can read "How to" Succeed at Love Every Minute of Your Life.? If you are tired of books on happiness, you may prefer a book called "How to". Make Yourself miserable?
Many of these books help people use their time better. Some people want books which will give them useful information about sports, hobbies, and travel. Other people use their free time to make repairs and improvements on their homes. They prefer books which give step by step instruction on how to repair things like plumbing (卫生管道工程) and electrical wiring, or on how to redecorate (重新装饰) or enlarge a house.

Subject Slimming down classics? | |
Mr. Handsome ![]() 2007-5-12&24 AM | Orion Books, which decides there is a market in creating cut-down classics(经典著作),is slimming down some novels by such great writers as L.Tolstoy,M.Mitchell and C.Bronte.Now,each of them has been whittled down to about 400 pages by cutting 30 to 40 per cent of the original, with words, sentences, paragraphs and,in a few cases, chapters removed. The first six shortened editions, all priced at £6.99 and advertised as great reads “in half the time”,will go on sale next month, with plans for 50 to 100 more to follow. The publishing house believes that modern readers will welcome the shorter versions. |
Mr. Edwards ![]() 2007-5-12 9:40 AM | Well,I’m publisher of Orion Group. Thanks for your attention,Mr.Handsome. I must say,the idea developed from a game of “shame”in my office. Each of us was required to confess(承认)to the most embarrassing blanks in his or her reading.I admitted that I had never read Anna Karenina and tried but failed to get through Gone with the Wind several times. One of my colleagues acknowledged skipping(跳读)Jane Eyre.We realised that life is too short to read all the books you want to and we never were going to read these ones. As a leading publishing house,we are trying to make classics convenient for readers but it’s not as if we’re withdrawing the original versions. They are still there if you want to read them. |
Ms.Weir![]() 2007-5-12 11:35 AM | I’m director of the online bookclub www.lovereading.co.uk. Mr.Edwards,I think your shortened editions is a breath of fresh air.I’m guilty of never having read Anna Karenina, because it’s just so long.I’d much rather read two 300-page books than one 600-page book.I am looking forward to more shortened classics! |
Mr. Crockatt ![]() 2007-5-124:38 PM | I’m from the London independent bookshop Crockatt & Powell. In my opinion, the practice is completely ridiculous. How can you edit the classics?I’m afraid reading some of these books is hard work, and that is why you have to develop as a reader. If people don’t have time to read Anna Karenina, then fine. But don’t read a shortened version and kid yourself it’s the real thing. |
A.opposes the reading of original classics |
B.is embarrassed for cutting down classics |
C.thinks cut-down classics have a bright future |
D.is cautious in its decision to cut down classics |
A.make them easier to read |
B.meet a large demand in the market |

A.speaks highly of the cut-down classics |
B.shows gailty of the original classics |
C.feels guilty of not reading the classics |
D.disapproves of shortening the classics |
A.reading the classic works is a confusing attempt |

The e-book is a downloadable book that can be put right onto your e-reader, certain cell-phones and computers. There are websites that sell e-books where you can buy them and load them right onto whatever device you choose. The e-book makes it possible to take reading with you, without the mess of carrying dozens of books around with you.
However, not all book authors are okay with having their books in digital format(格式). The writer of Harry Potter says that her books will never be an e-book, and many just like her feel the same way. However, there are lots of authors who absolutely love the idea and feel it’s the next step to keep books alive.
The e-book can be loaded onto an e-reader which is a mini-device that is slim and compact just like a cell phone. It usually has a touch pad screen and can hold a few hundred books. That ’s perfect news for people who travel on planes or go on holidays and would love to take a collection with them but wouldn’t carry fifty hard covers.
The other great thing about e-readers is that you can read e-books on them quickly and there’s no need for two hands to hold the book and turn the page; it is more convenient for people to read it. Most of them also have a nightlight, so if you want to read at night but don’t want a big light on to wake your partner, the e-reader is ideal. You can also use it on a plane, train or bus when it’s dark.
Websites that sell e-books have their sites looking just like ordinary bookstore websites. There is a list for best sellers and a new release section. There are also e-books on sale and gift certificates available to give to someone who also downloads e-books. They seem to cost the same amount of money as buying a paperback book.
