Long live language. That’s the message Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson and city councilor Amarjeet Sohi voiced when they declared Feb. 21 to be International Mother Language Day (IMLD) in Edmonton, the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta.

The pair were on hand for the International and Heriage Languages Association’s (IHLA) 12th annual Mother Language Day celebrations in an effort to save endangered languages.

While the City of Edmonton’s citizen and new arrival centre in city hall provides services in 150 languages, Bilash said research shows that “most people are still uncomfortable speaking their own language in public spaces.”

Bliash hopes the official announcement of International Mother Language Day in Edmonton——which echoes International Mother Language Day declared by UNESCO in 1999 —— will be a step toward encouraging more language diversity in order to preserve the cultures tied to them.

“Our words define us; our expressions and vocabulary define who we are as people,” said Marueen Kubinec, Alberta’s minister of culture and tourism. “Our words are living examples, perhaps the best that there are, of human creativity.”

With computers becoming more and more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly relying on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters (汉字). But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes(笔画)of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.

The death of languages is not a new phenomenon. Languages usually have a short life span(寿命) as well as a very high death rate. Only a few, including Egyptian, Chinese, Greek, Latin, have lasted more than 2,000 years.

What is new, however, is the speed at which they are dying out. Europe’s colonial ruling caused a sharp decrease in language kinds, reducing at least 15 percent of all languages spoken at the time. Over the last 300 years, Europe has lost a dozen, and Australia has only 20 left of the 250 spoken at the end of the 18th century.

The rise of nation-states has also been decisive in selecting national languages. By making great efforts to establish an official language in education, the media, national governments have tried to reduce minority languages.

This process of language standardization(标准化) has been improved by industrialization and scientific progress, which have created new methods of communication that are fast, straightforward and practical. Five Ways to Work Smarter, Not Harder

No matter how hard we work, it seems that there is never enough time to get all the important tasks done. Rather than working longer, consider working smarter, not harder. Here are some ways to work smarter:

Make a careful plan. Just like every organization needs a business plan, an efficient worker needs a work plan. 1. Schedule your tasks throughout the days, weeks, and months, but do it ahead of time.
