【题目】 In times of crisis (危机), people can be truly amazing. Age, wealth, race, religion, politics and all the other things that make us who we are as individuals seem to matter a little less, and the fact that we are all humans in this world together comes to matter more.

Seni Felic owns a restaurant in San Francisco called Bistro SF Grill, and he is feeling optimistic despite the crisis caused by COVID-19 “We’re going to pool our resources and people will pull together, and it will have a strong effect on solving any problems,” he told Reader’s Digest. With this in mind, he decided to offer nonprofit lunches and dinners in his restaurant.

“We are inviting all to stop by Bistro SF Grill to take a lunch or dinner box with food prepared in advance. The price is only $5.50 and it covers our expenses. We’d like to give for free, but we can’t afford it. Our idea was: Let’s try to help.” he said.

Despite San Francisco’s “shelter-in-place” order, Felic said they still plan to offer meals. The move deals with three problems in the community: offering various high-quality food to people who may not be able to cook or who can’t afford Whole Foods prices; helping the business continue operating during the crisis; and paying some of the hourly workers who make the food so that they can earn enough money to get through the hard times.

He believes that working together and helping others will be the key to helping all to get through this. “This problem will be controlled, and I just feel optimistic,” he added. “When people come together and cooperate, I think we can overcome almost anything.”

1What made Seni Felic optimistic during the time of COVID-19?

【题目】 Many years ago, a French naturalist, the Count de Buffon, wrote some books about natural history. 1.

Thomas Jefferson did not like what the Count had said about the natural wonders of the New World. It seemed to Jefferson that the Count had gone out of his way to speak of natural wonders in America as if they were unimportant. 2. He, too, was a naturalist, as well as a historian, writer and politician. He had seen the natural wonders of Europe. To him, they were no more important than those of the New World.

In 1788,Thomas Jefferson wrote about his home state, Virginia. While writing, he thought of its natural beauty and then of the words of Count de Buffon. 3. He said, “The Count de Buffon believes that nature belittles her productions on this side of the Atlantic.”

4. However, in 1872, a famous American word expert decided that the time had come to kill this word. He said, “Belittle has no chance of becoming English. And as more critical writers of America, like those of Britain, feel no need of it, the sooner it is forgotten, the better.”

5. Today, belittle is used, not only in the United States and England, but in other countries where the English language is spoken. It seems that efforts to belittle the word did not stop people from using it.

A.The books were a great success even though some people did not like them

B.They talked about the great cultural relics of different countries

C.Americans had already accepted Jefferson’s word and started to use it

D.The Count de Buffon was thought highly of at that time

E.At that moment, Jefferson created a new word -- belittle

F.This expert failed to kill the word

G.This troubled Thomas Jefferson

【题目】 Scientists who study insects are troubled now. All across the United States, bees are leaving their hives and never returning. According to the beekeepers across the country, 25 to 40 percent of the bees in the United States have left their hives since last fall. So far, no one can explain why.

Bees play an important role in the production of about one third of the food we eat. A large number of plants not only need people’s care but also need bees that spread pollen from flower to flower. Without this process, a plant can’t produce seeds or fruits.

Now, a group of scientists and beekeepers are trying to find out what has happened. By examining bees’ behavior and health, they hope to find out what has caused the bees’ disappearance and to prevent bees from disappearing in the future.

Some people think the disappearance may be caused by disease. According to Dewey Caron, a researcher at the University of Delaware, the bees have signs of troubled immune systems (免疫系统) inside their bodies. But why would troubled immune systems cause bees to leave their hives? After all, when people are sick, they want to stay at home. Caron guesses that sick bees may have difficulty figuring out where their homes are.

“Another cause may be some chemicals that farmers use to kill unwanted insects on crops.” says Jerry Hayes, who works at the Florida Department of Agriculture.

Boxing is a popular sport that many people seem to be fascinated by . Newspapers , magazines and sports programmes on TV frequently cover boxing matches . Professional boxers earn a lot of money , and successful boxers are treated as big heroes.

It seems to me that people , especially men ,find it appealing because it is an aggressive sport . When they watch a boxing match , they can identify with the winning boxer , and this gives them the feeling of being a winner themselves .
