Dear Sir or Madam,

I’m glad that the 2016 International Horticultural Exposition will be held in Tangshan. I’m writing to apply to be a volunteer. In my opinion, I meet all the requirements.

To begin with, I have a good command of English and can speak English fluently. So there is no doubt that I have no difficulty communicating with foreigners. Besides, I’m outgoing, warm-hearted, and quick in mind, which I think is a basic quality for a volunteer. Above all, as a native of Tangshan, I know this city and its culture very well. So I’m sure that the visitors will appreciate my work and enjoy their stay in our city.

Looking forward to your reply.

Are you learning a foreign 1anguage? Do you find it challenging to learn a foreign language? However, there are a few tips you can use in order to earn a top grade--as well as actually use the skills you've learned.

One of the most important and basic lessons in dealing with a foreign language is to learn and understand each concept and lesson before moving on to the next one.If you don’t understand one concept but move on to the next chapter anyway, you're less likely to understand the new material.

Learning a new language is not only an academic tool, but can help you in your everyday life as well.Being good at another language can help you communicate with other people, aid you when traveling to foreign countries, and even make your resume look better.

And it is important to learn correct pronunciation as soon as possible for poor pronunciation can be hard to break.Native speakers of the language as well as others fluent in the language you are 1earning will appreciate your efforts to learn correct pronunciation.

Gather outside materials such as books, study guides, books on tape, and travel books to aid you in learning the language.Your textbooks can't possibly teach you everything you need to know,so seeking out—side sources is generally a good rule of thumb to keep in mind.

A significant motivator in learning a foreign language is traveling to the country where the language is spoken. That way,you can see firsthand how the language is used, learn the culture, and meet native speakers of the language.Native speakers appreciate sincere attempts of others who take the time to learn their language.

Seek out native speakers of your new language in your school or neighborhood. They can help you with many skills, including pronunciation, and they can provide immediate feedback on your progress.

Here are tips for a successful speech from a professional speechwriter:

No speech should last more than 20 minutes. 1. The Sermon on the Mount, a collection of sayings and teachings of Jesus, for example, lasted hardly more than three minutes.

Focus on one topic. We’re human and tend to have lots of thoughts, opinions and ideas. You have to make proper selection. 2. Include and expand only those that explain and support your viewpoint(观点).

3. It’s important to remember that your words must be hearable and understandable the first time out.

Humour is vital. 4. Ronald Reagan always wanted to joke at the start of a speech because he needed the quick victory of laughter. It helped him relax. It also helped the audience relax.

Don’t forget to say thanks. You should always, at the beginning of the speech, thank the person who invited you and introduced you. 5. While you’re doing it, the audience gets a chance to daydream and settle down. They’re going to daydream at some point anyway, and it may as well be before you get to the heart of your remarks.

C. First you have to work out what you’re going to say.

D. Every speech needs it, and you need it, too, probably at the beginning.

We know that cigarette smoking kills. So, producers made electronic cigarettes as a safer smoking choice - safer than tobacco. Although e-cigarettes contain the drug nicotine like cigarettes, they do not use tobacco and you do not light them. They are powered by battery (电池).

However, if e-cigarettes are so safe, why has the United States Center for Disease Control(CDC) seen an increase in telephone calls about e-cigarette poisonings?

The answer is children. Most of the calls are from people worried about children who have played with the devices, In the period of one month this year, the Center said 215 people called the Center with e-cigarette concerns. More than half of these calls were for children aged five and younger. The devices had made them sick.

Tim McAfee is director of the Center's Office on Smoking and Health, He says the problem is regulation. Meaning, the U.S. federal government does not control e-cigarettes even though they contain liquid nicotine. Mr.McAfee adds that liquid nicotine is a well-known danger. Mr.McAfee explains that nicotine poisoning happens when it gets into the skin, gets into the eyes or is swallowed. It can cause stomach pain or a sense of unbalance. And too much nicotine can kill,

Tim McAfee says e-cigarettes do not create the level of risk to people that tobacco products do.He notes that almost 500,000 Americans die each year from cigarettes. "So, cigarettes are the winner in that contest." E-cigarettes do not contain hundreds of harmful chemicals that are found in real cigarettes. So, the U.S.Surgeon General Boris D. Lushniak has suggested that e-cigarettes may be a useful tool for adults trying to end their tobacco use.

But McAfee worries that teenagers may think electronic cigarettes are harmless. They could become addicted to the nicotine and then start smoking real cigarettes. In other words, he fears that for young people fake e-cigarettes could be a "gateway" to the real thing.

1.What do the producers think of e-cigarettes?

A. Dangerous. B. Expensive.

C. Safer. D. Cheaper.

B. Parents found the device useless in quitting smoking.

C. Children swallowed the liquid nicotine from the device.

D. Children might get addicted to playing with the device.

3.It can be inferred from the passage that .

A. the CDC wants to develop a better type of e-cigarettes

B. the government is in favor of the use of e-cigarettes

C. Surgeon General Boris D. Lushniak is a heavy smoker

D. smokers most probably can't quit smoking using e-cigarettes

4.What is Tim McAfee's opinion about smoking?

A. Adults should use harmless e-cigarettes.

B. Smoking e-cigarettes can make a person sick.

C. He claims that regulations should be made to ban smoking.

[1]Oops! In your rush to get to school, you drop a piece of toast on the floor. Do you throw it away or decide it’s still OK to eat? If you’re like most people, you eat it. Maybe you follow the “5-second rule”, which claims foods are safe to eat,if you pick them up within 5 seconds of dropping them. But you might want to think again. Scientists now say that 5 seconds are all it takes for foods to become contaminated with enough bacteria to make you sick.

[2]Bacteria can cause many kinds of illnesses. Some kinds of bacteria can grow on food. If we eat foods on which these bacteria are growing, we can become sick. One of these food-borne bacteria is Salmonella. It makes 1.4 million people sick every year. Earlier this year, 370 people became sick after eating peanut butter that had been contaminated with Salmonella at the manufacturing factory. Salmonella are often found in raw eggs and chicken. Cooking kills these bacteria, which is why it is so important to cook eggs, chicken, and other foods carefully.

[3]Being a good housekeeper is another good way to prevent infection. If household surfaces aren’t washed thoroughly, they can support Salmonella for weeks. A team of scientists at Clemson University in South Carolina have tested the 5-second rule, using sandwich ingredients. First, they placed a known amount of Salmonella cells on three surfaces: wood, tile, and carpet. They then placed a slice of bread and a slice of bologna(博洛尼亚大红肠) on each surface for 5, 30, or 60 seconds. After just 5 seconds, both the bread and bologna picked up enough bacteria to make you sick.

[4]So forget the 5-second rule. If your toast lands on the floor, throw it away. Stick a fresh slice of bread in the toaster. And this time, be careful not to drop it!

1. What is the “5-second rule” mentioned in the first paragraph? (no more than 18 words)

——————————————————————————————————

2.Why is it important for us to cook food carefully?(no more than 5 words)

3.What advice is given to prevent infection in the last paragraph? (no more than 10 words)

4.Why did the scientists at Clemson University carry out that test? (no more than 15 words.)

5. What is the author’s attitude towards the 5-second rule? (one word)
