6.He has breakfast at 2 a.m.because Johnny Barnes,Mr.Happy Man,has work to do.From 4 to 10 a.m.,he greets commuters(每日往返上班者)as they drive by on their way to  work.
For years he worked as an electrician on the Bermuda railway and drove buses. When he  retired,he still wanted to feel useful. So he positions himself on a patch of grass next to a  roundabout that leads into Hamilton,Bermuda's largest city.He smiles and waves at every  single person who passes by.He tells them he loves them-and means it.
In the Matt Morris's short documentary,he says:
I'm just little Johnny Barnes.I'm just a little, small instrument in the hand of God be used any way he feels fit. What I do every day,2:00 in the morning I'm getting my break fast. You're still sleeping[he tells the interviewer],I guess.
From 20 to four until ten I stand on the corner and just greet people, let them know that life is sweet and beautiful. No matter what happens in life,it's always sweet to be alive.
No matter what the weather is like,he is there from Monday to Friday, spreading love.On the rare occasion he is not there, people call the radio station to see if he is OK.

14.The electric revolution
The main reasons why electric cars are not more popular at present are their price and their relatively small range.
Existing battery systems only allow electric cars (33)to travel (travel) a distance of between 100and 160km.However,this distance may not be a problem for urban drivers.A recent Sydney study reported that 70 percent of journeys were 30 km or less,and recent data from the US suggests that 77 percent of trips (34)taken (take) there are 48 km or less.
An innovative company called Better Place is aiming to make electric cars an option for all drivers.It wants to see existing vehicles replaced by electric vehicles which,it says,offer a number of benefits.Firstly,they can be powered by renewable energy which produces zero emissions.(35)What is more important is that electric motors are more efficient and can convert more than 90 percent of power into movement.(36)To achieve (achieve) its aim,Better Place plans to use technology already available.
The plan is simple but revolutionary.It starts with the installation of a home charge point,and through this,the vehicle will be plugged into the electricity charge point whenever it is in the garage,typically at night.In the morning,with a fully charged battery,the car is capable of as much as 160 km in urban motoring conditions.(37)With the home charge point,the battery can be topped up by charge points at work and at supermarkets.
(38)The battery is linked to a control centre by smart technology inside the vehicle.Better Place can then ensure that the car is charged with electricity from renewable sources at the cheapest price.For (39)longer (long) trips,a navigation system directs the driver to the nearest switch station,(40)where the battery can be replaced with a charged one by a robot within a couple of minutes.
4.Teenagers at one German school are learning how to achieve happiness alongside subjects like maths and languages.
The class sit in a circle with their eyes shut and count from one to ten:one begins,the next voice comes from the far right,a third from the other side.The aim is to listen for an opportunity to shout the number without clashing(冲突) with another voice or leaving a pause.On the first try,most of the young Germans try to be first,while a few are too shy to join in.But by the fifth round,they develop a rhythm.
The message:giving other people space but also confidently claiming your own space is a requirement for social well-being.
While the game suggests a soft course for the less bright,the school says it is trying to make it affect even clever pupils.The Willy Hellpach School is the first in the nation to develop a happiness course,intended for 17-19-year-olds preparing for university-entrance exams."The course isn't there to make you happy,"Ernst Fritz-Schubert,the school principal,warned the pupils who were taking the course,"but rather to help you discover the ways to become happy."Cooking a meal together will be one of the class exercises,along with improving body language under the guidance of two professional actresses.
"In the first period,we had to each say something positive about another member of the class and about ourselves.No laughing at people or teasing,"said Fanny,17.
The message:self-esteem(自尊) improves happiness too.
The course is taught for three periods a week and will be graded as a part of overall assessment.Despite the happy subject,the pupils themselves insist it is no laughing matter.Max,18,says he is happy when he finds people who share his interests.Janina,18,says she needs to be fit to feel happy.
"We want to show how proper food or exercise can help in becoming happy,"the principal said.He hopes other schools in Germany will copy the idea.The school has attracted national interest since it announced its new course.

8.Robots make me nervous-especially the ones which seem to think for themselves.I was embarrassed to admit this till I heard that Bill Gates,the founder of Microsoft,felt the same way.
Gates said in an interview with the social networking and news website Reddit:"I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence.First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent.That should be positive if we manage well.A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern."
Well,maybe I don't have to worry about my computer and kitchen equipment yet.After I use them I can always pull the plug.But in the future,machines might find a way to prevent us from switching them off.There's a terrible thought!
Maybe the problem with computers too clever for us is not that they are evil like some we've seen in sci-fi movies.What could put us in danger is that they might be too efficient.That's what philosopher Nick Bostrom from Oxford University believes.He says that machines are indifferent(漠然)to humans and in pursuit of their own goals,the destruction of people might be just additional damage.Bostrom gives us an example:A machine which might have as its only goal to produce as many paperclips as possible might look at human bodies as extra material for paperclips and go after you.Because it is,well,a machine,it would not take pity on you.
It's a good thing that American writer Isaac Asimov thought about how far robots can go and left us his three rules of robotics.They state that a robot may not hurt a human being or allow the human being to come to harm.
I'm glad my machines at home are"dumb".All my cleaner wants to take over is the carpet in my living room.Let's hope they don't create an appliance which wants to take over the world!.
