Arguments happen in every healthy relationship—we know it sounds contradictory, but it’s true—but they can still have a negative impact if they aren’t handled properly. 1.

Take a breath. We know that it can be hard to think clearly when you are angry, so we would first like to encourage you to try to take a second to collect your thoughts before engaging in a dialogue with your partner. 2. If you are not careful you could potentially say what might damage your relationship.

Take the situation as it is. Even though you are angry and it can be hard to be objective, try to see the situation for what it is. Do not escalate (不断恶化) the argument. 3. Try to understand the purpose behind the action—if something happened accidentally, you should not treat as if it were done intentionally.

4. If you have done something wrong, the best possible option for you is to admit it. Denying something only makes it more hurtful and often your partner will be able to forgive you much more quickly if you are honest.

Set ground rules. After a fight you and your partner can have a heart-to-heart talk of what happened. 5. At this point you can set some ground rules for future fights, like not cursing each other or calling each other’s names, which might help reduce the intensity of your fights.

Fighting with someone is never easy. And it’s especially difficult when you are arguing with someone that you care about. Thinking carefully and controlling yourself during an argument can help you avoid saying something that could permanently hurt your relationship.

A. Take positive action.

B. Avoid making excuses.

C. Anger can be poisonous.

D. Here is how to maintain good relationship.

E. You can discuss what hurts each of you and how you can move forward.

F. The trick to prevent an argument from destroying your relationship is learning how to fight fair.

G. Ask yourself if this situation is worth arguing about.

Washington D.C. is No.1

It is best known as a city of monument. In the middle of traffic circles or on street corners, you'll find statues, plaques (匾牌), and simple blocks of marble there. They honor the people who helped shape the US.

And on Oct. 20, Lonely Planet, one of the world's largest travel guides, named Washington D.C. the No.1 city in its list of “Best in Travel 2015”.

“The year 2015 is a fantastic year to visit Washington D.C.,” Tom Hall, editorial director of Lonely Planet, told The Guardian. “The 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's assassination (暗杀) makes this year big for Washington D.C. The famous top hat of America's 16th president and the gun that fired the deadly shot will be on display. Add that to its incredible eats, performing arts and museums. Many great basketball players had clever nicknames (绰号), usually describing the player’s overall style on the court (球场). Below are some of the colorful nicknames among popular NBA players.

“Tiny”

Nate Archibald, at six feet one inch tall, was small for a basketball player. Still, Archibald used speed and his brains to control the court in the 14 seasons that he played in the NBA. Interestingly, his nickname originated off the court: he was named after his father, “Big Tiny”.

“Magic”

Earvin Johnson was called “Magic” by a sportswriter who saw him playing basketball in one high school game. Johnson was a skillful player, often doing the unexpected, to the chagrin of his competitors and the delight of the audience. He also won a gold medal as part of the U.S. “Dream Team” in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.

“The Mailman”

Karl Malone earned his nickname because on the court he delivered consistently. Malone spent most of his career with the Utah Jazz, gaining a reputation as one of the best power forwards of all time. He also won two Olympic gold medals, as part of the U.S. “Dream Team” in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain and in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.

“The Iceman”

George Gervin made the most difficult shots look easy. He was also famous for keeping his cool in every game, playing in a relaxed way under pressure. Gervin, who played most of his 14 years in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs, was unequalled in many ways as a shooting guard.

Among all the fast growing science and technology, the research of human genes, or biological engineering as people call it, is drawing more and more attention now. Sometimes it is a hot topic discussed by people.

The greatest thing that gene technology can do is to cure serious diseases that doctors at present can almost do nothing with, such as cancer and heart disease. Every year, millions of people are murdered by these two killers. And to date, doctors have not found an effective way to cure them. But if the gene technology is applied, not only these two diseases can be cured completely, bringing happiness and more living days to the patients, but also the great amount of money people spend on curing their diseases can be saved, therefore it benefits the economy as well. In addition, human life span (寿命) can be prolonged.

Gene technology can help people to give birth to more healthy and clever children. Some families, with the English imperial (皇家的) family being a good example, have hereditary diseases. This means their children will for sure have the family disease, which is a great trouble for these families. In the past, doctors could do nothing about hereditary diseases. But gene technology can solve this problem perfectly. The scientist just need to find the wrong gene and correct it, and a healthy child will be born.

Some people are worrying that the gene research can be used to manufacture human beings in large quantities. In the past few years, scientists have succeeded in cloning a sheep, therefore these people predict that human babies would soon be cloned. But I believe cloned babies will not come out in large quantities, for most couples in the world can have babies in very normal way. Of course, the governments must take care to control gene technology.

1.What does “them” in the second paragraph refer to ?

A. People with cancer or heart disease.

2.What can gene technology do according to paragraph three?

A. It can help the English imperial family out.

B. It can be used to clone human babies.

C. It can help people to give birth of a baby.

D. It is likely to treat hereditary diseases.

3.What are people worried about according to the passage?

A. Human babies may be cloned in a large scale.

B. Healthy human babies will soon be cloned.

C. Scientists may well find the wrong genes.

D. The government may not control gene techs.

4.This passage is mainly written to _________________.

A. show gene technology will benefit people

B. show gene technology will do harm as well

C. tell that gene technology is a hot topic

D. tell that gene technology is growing fast
