Most people agree that it’s important to have a sense of humor. Having the ability to laugh can help one overcome anxiety, and make better decisions in difficult situations. People with a well-developed sense of humor appear to be happier, and some are healthier as well. This suggests that having a sense of humor is good for you. Humorless people may find themselves being treated as a fool, and become anxious and upset.
A sense of humor also plays an important role in human relationships. However, not everyone has a sense of humor. People with developmental disabilities (发展性能力丧失) can sometimes have no sense of humor, or have a very strange one.
A number of factors affect a person’s sense of humor, with the age probably being the main one. Young children are often highly amused by simple jokes or shows, while teenagers prefer to enjoy the ironic (讽刺的) events. Educational level, culture, and religious faith also affect one’s sense of humor. While Christians, for example, may have a deep appreciation of jokes about the Bible, others may find them disrespectful.
Many people believe that a sense of humor is something that develops on its own, and that you cannot teach someone to understand why jokes, certain comments, situations or events are funny. However, things can be done to enhance one’s sense of humor. Children, for example, benefit from being told jokes and encouraged to laugh, although some children’s jokes might seem rather strange to adults. If you have children, try to encourage them to tell jokes and think about what makes things funny. And it will help them develop a sense of humor.

Discouragement seems to follow us a good part of the time,   37  whatever it is that we work so hard doing, it seems that there is    38   someone else who can do it much better.
I have always enjoyed music and it is    39   to me that every musician has a    40  of their own. My father__41   several instruments and when he played with others, it was not difficult to ___42  his sound in a group. Whether it was guitar or another instrument, he had his own  43 sound.

The sound that you make may not be the same as someone else's but who is to say which is     46   . ” It is said that, “   47    is in the eye of the beholder(观看者), ” perhaps it could be said that “a delightful sound is in the ear of the    48   . ”
Every person has a different tone of voice that     49  only to them,     50    we all know people with an unforgettable laugh or a way of     51    that is unique to them. It might not be the sound of your music or your voice at all. It      52    be the way you whistle or the sound of your footsteps.
Each person has a(an)   53 on the world in some way. Someone else can do what you do, but they cannot do it   54  the same way that you do it. The next time you feel   55 , remember “Nobody else can make the sound that you make. ”

I used to be a very self-centered person, but in the past two years I have really changed. I have started to think about other people        I think about myself. I am happy that I am becoming a       person.
I think my        started when I was at Palomar College. At first, I just wanted to get my       and be left alone. I thought I was smarter than everyone else, so I hardly ever         to anyone in my classes. By the end of my first semester, I was really        . It seemed as if everyone but me had made friends and was having fun. So tried a (n)        . I started asking people around me how they were doing, and if they were having trouble I       to help. That was really a big        for me. By the end of the year, I had several new friends, and two of        are still my best friends today.
A bigger cause of my new        , however, came when I took a part-time job at a Vista Nursing Home. One old lady there who had Alzheimer’s disease became my         . Every time I came into her room, she was so       because she thought I was her daughter. Her real daughter never        her, so I took her place. She let me       that making others feel good make me feel good, too, when she died, I was       , but I was very grateful to her.
I think I am a much        person today than I used to be, and I hope I will not        these experiences. They have         me to care about other people more than about myself. I        who I am today, and I could not say that a few years ago.

Most glasses help people see better, but a new invention from Japan may soon improve language skills and   language barriers instead.
High-tech Company NEC has   a device that it says will   users to communicate with people of different   .
Shaped like a pair of eyeglasses   without the lenses(镜片), the computer-assisted Tele Scouter would   a picture-forming device to present almost real-time translations directly onto the   retina(视网膜). The text, provided instantly      voice recognition and   programs, would effectively provide movie-like “subtitles” (字幕) during a conversation between two people   the glasses.

Each user’s   words would be   by microphone, translated, and be instantly   for conversation partners in   visual text and as audio delivered through headphones.
Users can still see their conversation partner’s face because the text is   onto only part of the retina—the first time such technology is used in a commercial product, according to NEC.
The company plans to put the Tele Scouter in Japan in November next year,    at the beginning without the translation mode.

In all one’s lifetime, it is  28 that one spends the most time being with or dealing with, but it is precisely oneself that one has the least  29 of. When you are going upwards in life, you tend to overestimate yourself; when you are going downhill you tend to underestimate yourself. It's  30  that you think it wise for yourself to know your place and stay away from worldly trouble wearing a mask of cowardice, behind   31 the flow of sap in your life will be retarded (妨碍).
To get a thorough understanding of oneself  32 doing oneself a favor when it's needed. In time of anger, do yourself a favor by giving vent (发泄) to it in a quiet place so that you won't be hurt by its flames; in time of  33 , do yourself a favor by sharing it with your friends so as to change a gloomy mood into a cheerful one; in time of tiredness, do yourself a favor by getting a good sleep or taking some tonic. Show yourself loving  34 about your health and daily life. Unless you know perfectly well when and how to do yourself a favor, you won't be confident and ready enough to resist the attack of illness.
To get a thorough understanding of oneself is to get a full control of ones life. Then one will  35 one's life full of color and flavor.

One effective way of destroying happiness is to look at something and focus on even the smallest fault. It’s like looking at the tiled (铺瓦的) ceiling and concentrating on the space where one tile is    1  .
Once I heard a bald man said, “Whenever I enter a room, all I see is hair.” Once you’ve    2   what your missing tile is, explore whether acquiring it will    3   make you happy. Then do one of the three things: get it, replace it with a different    4 , or forget about it and    5  the tiles in your life that are not missing.
We all know people who have had a relatively    6  life, yet are essentially unhappy, while people who have suffered a great deal generally remain happy.
The first    7  is gratitude. All happy people are grateful. Ungrateful people cannot be happy. We tend to think that being unhappy leads people to    8 , but it’s truer to say that complaining leads to people becoming unhappy.
The second secret is awareness. We should    9   that happiness is a byproduct (副产品) of something else. The most obvious    10   are those pursuits ( 追求) that give our lives purpose---anything from studying insects to playing baseball. The more passions we have, the more happiness we are   11   to experience.
Finally, the belief that something permanent goes beyond us and that our   12   has some larger meaning can help us to feel happier. We need a spiritual faith, or a philosophy of life. Whatever your philosophy is, it should    13  this truth: if you choose to find the   14   in every situation, you will be blessed, and if you choose to find the awful, you will be cursed. As for happiness itself, this    15   depends on your decision to make.

During the last fifteen years of my mother's life she suffered with Alzheimer's disease. Until then she had been a bright, __51__ woman deeply interested and involved in the world around her. I would go home to visit her in Virginia and she would look at me in a(an) __52__ way and ask, "Who are you?" I would answer, "I'm your son." "Where do you live?" She would ask. "In California," I would tell her. "Isn't that interesting," she would say, "I have a son in California."
She seemed __53__ forgetful and confused at the beginning of the disease, __54__ later on she would go __55__periods of intense anxiety. She would pace through the house she had lived in most of her life __56__ uneasily that she wanted to go home. Or she would leave home and wander away if she were __57__ for a short time.
Hoping to please her and put her mind __58__ I would take her for a drive, visiting sites where she had lived as a __59__. In the yard of the hillside house in Shipman I sat in the car and admired the view of the old oaks and long green lawn. I __60__ my mother there as a little girl playing with the pet lamb she had been so fond of. I looked to her for some __61__. She shook her head and said, "I want to go home." Over the years I have decided that what my mother was calling home was not a __62__, but a time. I suspect it was a time when she was much __63__, when her children were still underfoot, when her husband was still vigorous and attentive.
Watching my mother's suffering set me wondering __64__ I would have in mind if someday I couldn't find __65__ and wanted to go there. In this family we tend to be long-lived and we grow fuzzy (糊涂的) minded as the years go by. At eighty I have already noticed some __66__ symptoms. My doctor says the forgetfulness is only __67__ and that it comes with age. Still the fear of Alzheimer's is haunting there. Someday __68__ and when I become even more __69__ minded than I am now, unable to drive and unable to tell you where "home" is, my dear son, I expect I will ask you to take me home, I know you will do your best to find the place I need to be. I leave these notes for your __70__.

Once there was a huge apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it every day. He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him.
Time went by --- the little boy had grown up and he no longer played around the tree every day. One day, the boy came back to the tree and he looked sad. “Come and play with me,” the tree asked the boy. “I’m no longer a kid. I wouldn’t play around the tree any more.” the boy replied. “I want toys. I need money to buy them.” “Sorry, I don’t have money. But you can pick all my apples and sell them. So, you will have money.” The boy picked all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy never came back after he picked the apples.
One day, the boy returned and the tree was so excited, “Come and play with me,” the tree said. “I don’t have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help?” “Sorry, I don’t have a house. But you can cut off my branches to build your house.” So the boy cut all the branches off the tree and left happily. The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy never came back since then. The tree was again lonely and sad.
One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was pleased. “Come and play with me!” the tree said. “I am sad and getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?” “Use my trunk to build your boat. You can sail far away and be happy.” So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and never showed up for a long time.
Finally, the boy returned after he left for so many years. “Sorry, my boy. But I don’t have anything for you any more. The only thing left is my dying root,” the tree said with tears.
“Good! Old tree root is the best place to lean on and rest. Come and sit down with me and rest.” The boy sat down and the tree was glad and smiled with tears.
