If you've been to Europe a few times already, chances are that you've hit all the big destinations: London, Paris, Rome,Berlin. On your next trip you can either visit those same cities a second time,or instead you can take a chance and walk the streets of some cities that are a little bit smaller,a little bit less famous, but still full of European grace and charm. Here are four European cities to visit that you probably haven't been to yet.

All of the typical Belgium features abound here-waffles and beer.Every year from Saturday before July 21,Ghent hosts a ten-day festival. This music and theater festival draws almost 2 million visitors,as the city streets transform into performance spaces for performers, buskers (街头艺人) and musicians.

Palermo,Italy

Palermo is the capital city of Sicily, the southern island off the coast of mainland Italy. The city has an ancient history, and the various cultures that have controlled the island through the years have all left their marks on it. China’s largest water diversion project(引水工程) may start supplying water to Shandong Province by 2007 and Beijing by 2010, an official confirmed Tuesday.

The worsening water shortage in the two areas, caused by decades of drought, may be alleviated with water from the mighty Yangtze River in the South which will be diverted into the parched North, he said. The water diversion project consists of three 1,300-kilometre canals that will carry water from the Yangtze along the eastern, middle and western parts of the country.

Zhang Jiyao, director of the state Concil’s office in charge of the South to North Project, told a national conference that ground will be broken in more places along two of the lines of the ambitious water diversion scheme, the largest of its kind in the world.

Before next year’s flood season, construction of four new sections along the two lines will push the project further along the fast track. That would bring the total sections under construction to 13,since construction started in 2002 with an estimated investment of 124 billion yuan(about US $15 billion).

When finished, the two water diversion canals will be capable of transferring 13.4 billion cubic meters of water a year.

It is 7 am and the alarm is going off. You know you have to be out of bed to catch the bus. But the urge to bury yourself in the bed is ever so strong. Sounds familiar? Why is it that teens find it difficult to get themselves out of bed in time every morning or stay sharp and focused during the first couple of hours of school?

During adolescence, the body goes through many changes and these include a shift in sleep patterns. Researchers from MIT have been tracking the body’s need for sleep in teenagers. They found that though adolescents need as much as 9.5 hours of sleep a day, they get to bed later and later with each passing year. In fact, the sleep cycle shifts later by as much as 12 to 18 minutes each year between the ages of 10 and 20! So by the time a 10?year?old who sleeps at 8 pm grows to be 17 or 18, his body naturally wants to stay up till 10:30 pm or 11 pm.

According to researchers, this is because of a hormone called melatonin (褪黑激素) that is secreted (分泌) by the pineal gland — a tiny structure deep inside the brain. Melatonin regulates the body’s natural day?night rhythms. It causes a person to become sleepy by lowering his body’s core temperature. In teens, melatonin is secreted much later in the evening and continues to increase throughout the night. This makes it difficult for teens to fall asleep earlier as they did in their younger years. Likewise, the effect of melatonin continues until much later in the morning, making it hard for them to wake up early.

A study found that at least one in four teens is tired and falls asleep in school at least once a week. During sleep, important body functions and brain activities happen. So how can teenagers get their sleep enough? The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that middle and high schools should start later — not before 8:30 am. This should give teens some more time to sleep at night.

1.From Paragraph 2, we can learn that if you sleep late, the next day you should ________.

A. stay sharp B. skip breakfast

C. get up late D. stay up late

2.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A. The students want to stay up.

B. The shifts of the sleep cycle.

C. The pineal gland secretes melatonin.

D. The adolescents sleep late.

3.The teens go to sleep later than before because ________.

A. melatonin is secreted much later

B. melatonin regulates the sleep time

C. they sleep a lot in the daytime

D. they need to finish their homework

4.According to AAP’s recommendation, middle and high schools should ________.

A. let teens sleep in the day B. let the students be active

C. delay the start time D. start later at 8 am

All languages change over time, but some change at a faster rate than others. 1. The most important factors are the number of people who speak a language, where they live and whether they move around, the importance of the language for world trade and communication, and changes in technology.

2. However, today English is the most widely used language in the world. English is spoken by about 350 million people as a first language in countries such as Great Britain, the United States. In addition, about a billion more people speak English as a second language.

English started to take over French as an international language during the period of British colonialism (殖民主义) when the English ruled many countries in Africa and Asia. 3. The colonial period came to an end at the same time that several other changes occurred. For example, the U.S. started to play a greater part in global affairs and the international economy. New means of communication technology such as television and the Internet spread English worldwide. 4. In addition, they could use the Internet for information, business, or e-mail communication, all in English. Just as the use of English spread, other languages changed English by contact or by new inventions and technology.

In contrast, Icelandic is a language that has changed very slowly. Icelandic speakers today can understand poetry written in a slightly different dialect over 1,000 years ago! Why has Icelandic changed so slowly? The main reason is the isolated (孤立的) location of the island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. 5. Compared to England, Iceland had no history of colonialism. Iceland’s small population has not played a major role in international trade or communication. Today, most Icelanders speak English in addition to their native language. With outside influences, Icelandic is changing more rapidly now.

A. People everywhere could watch the news or sports events in English.

B. These changes have a great influence on the development of society.

C. Isolation meant that for hundreds of years, Icelanders had little contact with speakers of other languages.

D. What are some of the factors that influence how quickly a language changes?

E. The language communication brings about the communication of technology.

F. In the past, other languages such as Latin or French were more important than English.

G. English was the primary means of communication in these colonies.
