C.Devoted to bringing upD.Devoting to bring up

分析 这位年轻的科学家致力于揭示大自然的奥秘,很少有时间娱乐.

解答 答案:C
题干中devoted to bring up the secret of nature作原因状语,要用非谓语动词;be devoted to sth全身心投入到某事中,致力于某事,后接名词或动名词;devote与主语the young scientist构成动宾关系,要用被动,即the young scientist is devoted to bringing up the secret of nature.故选C.

点评 过去分词是非谓语动词的一种,用法很灵活,分为简单式done(表示与谓语同时或几乎同时发生的动作);完成式having been done(表示先于谓语的动作).学习时,要把握其用法特征:表示被动和完成.同时还要注意区分现在分词和不定式.

14.Claude Monet was born on November 14,1840,in Paris,but he spent most of his childhood in Le Havre,a city of southern France.By the time he was fifteen Monet had become popular as a caricaturist(漫画家).Through an exhibition of his drawings at a local frame shop in 1858,Monet met the French landscape painter Eugene Louis Boudin,who introduced Monet to outdoor painting,an activity that soon became his life's work.
By 1859Monet had committed himself to a career as an artist and began to spend as much time in Pairs as possible.During the 1860s he met Edouard Manet.With other ambitious French painters,they formed the impressionist school.
Working outside,Monet painted simple landscapes and he began to have some success.As his style developed,however,Monet broke one traditional artistic convention(常规)after another.His experiments with bright color became more and more daring,and he seemed to cut himself off from the possibility of a successful career as a conventional painter supported by the art establishment.
In 1874Monet and his colleagues decided to organize their own exhibition.They called themselves independents,but the press soon labeled them impressionists because one of Monet's paintings had borne the title Impression:Sunrise.Then the name stuck.
By the mid-1880s,Monet,generally regarded as the leader of the impressionist school,had achieved significant recognition and financial security.In 1890 he was able to purchase some property in the village of Giverny,not far from Paris,and there be began to construct a water garden-a water lily pond with a Japanese bridge.Beginning in 1906,paintings of the pond and the water lilies occupied his mind for the rest of his life.His famous series Water Lilies,painted between 1990and 1926,Clearly shows the artist's strong interest in color and produces a remarkable(不寻常的)visual effect.Despite failing eyesight,Monet continued to paint almost up to the time of his death,on December 5,1926,at Giverny.

8.After lunch,I walked back home.I was just to cross the street when I heard the sound of a coin dropping.It wasn't much but,as I turned,my eyes caught the heads of several other people turning too.A woman had dropped what appeared to be a dime.
The tinkling sound of a coin dropping on pavement is an attention-getter.It Can be nothing more than a penny.Whatever the coin is,no one ignores the sound of it.It got me thinking about sounds again.We are surrounded by so many sounds that attract the most attention.
People in New York City seldom turn to look when a fire engine,a police car or an ambulance comes screaming along the street.When I'm in New York,I'm a New Yorker.I don't turn either.Like the natives,I hardly hear a siren(警报)there.
However,at home in my little town in Connecticut,it's different.The distant sound of a police car,all emergency vehicle or a fire siren brings me to my feet if I'm seated and brings me to the window if I'm in bed.It's the quietest sounds that have most effect on us.not the loudest.In the middle of the night,I can hear a dripping tap a hundred yards away thigh three closed doors.I've been hearing little creaking noises and sounds which my imaginnation turns into footsteps in the middle of the night for twenty-five years in our house.How come I never hear those sounds in the daytime?
I'm quite clear in my mind what the good sounds are and what the bad sounds are,I've turned against whistling,for instance:I used to think of it as the mark of a happy worker but lately I've been associating the whistler with a nervous person making unconscious noises.The tapping,tapping,tapping of my typewriter as the keys hit the paper is a lovely sound to me.I often like the sound of what I write better than the looks of it.

18.If it really is what's on the inside that counts, then a lot of thin people might be in trouble.
Some doctors now think that the internal(内部的) fat surrounding important organs like the heart or liver could be as dangerous as the external fat which can be noticed more easily.
"Being thin doesn't surely mean you are not fat,"said Dr Jimmy Bell at Imperial College.Since 1994,Bell and his team have scanned nearly 800 people with MRI machines to create"fat maps"showing where people store fat.
According to the result, people who keep their weight through diet rather than exercise are likely to have major deposits of internal fat, even if they are slim.
Even people with normal Body Mass Index scores can have surprising levels of fat deposits inside.Of the women,as many as 45 percent of those with normal BMI scores (20 to 25)actually had too high levels of internal fat.Among men,the percentage was nearly 60 percent.
According to Bell, people who are fat on the inside are actually on the edge of being fat. They eat too many fatty and sugary foods, but they are not eating enough to be fat.Scientists believe we naturally store fat around the belly first, but at some point, the body may start storing it elsewhere.
Doctors are unsure about the exact dangers of internal fat,but some think it has something to do with heart disease and diabetes(糖尿病).They want to prove that internal fat damages the body's communication systems.
The good news is that internal fat can be easily burned off through exercise or even by improving your diet."If you want to be healthy, there is no shortcut.Exercise has to be an important part of your lifestyle."Bell said.
